"Does Managing Diversity give Management in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry a competitive advantage over its competitors"?

It is a common misconception that diversity in tourism and hospitality organisations is only about race or about the EEO. Diversity in tourism and hospitality is so much more than EEO although it encompasses the EEO's fundamental theories to build long-term business strategies (Hogh, personal communication, March 18, 00). Some tourism and hospitality managers are of the opinion that managing diversity will enable them to achieve a competitive advantage. This essay will explore three hotels in the tourism and hospitality industry and discuss the effects of diversity in their businesses in relation to gaining a competitive edge over their competitors.

Diversity includes but is not limited to race, age, gender, religious background, learning orientation, work levels and functions, economic background, communication and learning styles (What every consultant needs to know about diversity and consulting and training, 00, p. 1). To gain a competitive advantage in tourism and hospitality organisations, as with any business, diversity must encompass all these differences to ensure the best possible benefits are achieved from their employees. When employees are managed to achieve their full potential the long-term business objectives of the organisation will not only be achieved but customer service will be excellent and thus profits increased resulting in a leading edge over competitors (Hogh, personal communication, 00, March 18).

Today few debates in American politics and society are as complex as the debate over abortion. The question of abortion encompasses many different issues, from the biological question of when life begins to the social question of the quality of an unwanted child's life; from the legal question of whether some, not all, abortions should be outlawed to the ethical question of whether a rape victim may be required to bear her attackers child. Because of the debate positions on abortion are usually polarized.

Abortion has been known since ancient times. Women in virtually all cultures have used it as a form of birth control, regardless of whether the culture officially permitted it. Over many centuries, women wishing to terminate a pregnancy have drunk mildly poisonous liquids, rubbed certain herbs on their stomachs, or attempted to pierce their wombs with sharp objects. They may have acted alone or they may have had help. Sometimes these methods of abortion indeed destroyed the fetus. Sometimes, however, the woman succeeded only in hurting herself. At best, abortion was a hit or miss proposition in which the stakes for the woman were quite high.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, however, the situation began to change. As medical technology and knowledge increased, so did the options available to abortion seeking women. Over the decades, operating techniques grew refined enough to allow the doctor or a reasonably skilled layman to surgically remove a fetus from the womb. While this procedure almost always resulted in a successful termination of the pregnancy, many of the old risks for women remained. Until the development of antibiotics in the 140's, the death rate among women from abortions was quite high.

At different times, Western societies have taken all the stances on the abortion question. Abortions were permitted by English common-law at the time of the first European settlement, as long as the abortion was performed before the "quickening"-the moment in pregnancy, usually occurring around four months after conception, when the mother first notices fetal movement. This custom, in turn, was adopted by the American colonies. Exactly how common abortion was in colonial times is impossible to know, but most experts believe that it was far from rare. Certainly many newspapers of the time ran advertisements for abortion inducing drugs.

Effects of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Maladaptive behavior such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common among children. The diagnosis of ADHD in adults can be more difficult than in children. There are many controversial issues surrounding adult/child (ADHD) which include history, symptoms, treatment, and causes.

Historically speaking, ADHD is generally thought to be a childhood disorder. However, data suggest that many adults, both male and female are affected. Most patients diagnosed during childhood carry the disorder into adulthood. Studies show that out of the number of adult cases, over 50 percent were ADHD as children. Nevertheless, women tend not to be diagnosed as children because they never made trouble. Instead, they are often called daydreamers or disorganized. However, the cognitive problems such as being attentive exist. In addition, of the children diagnosed with the disorder, over 80 percent were boys.(Searight 1)

This disorder presents different symptoms in adults than in children. Adults are first evaluated according to their personal account of symptoms. Some of these symptoms may include problems with organizational skills, being easily frustrated, unable to prioritize, quick tempered, impulsive, trouble coping with stress, finding it hard to finish tasks, trouble keeping a job, and defiance of authority figures. The individual may also forget important engagements or speak out of turn, giving no thought to what he or she says. Personality traits of the individual may range from being creative, intelligent, and driven to pessimistic, worrisome, underachiever, or destructive. Persons having ADHD throughout childhood seem to undergo changes as an adult. In the place of hyperactivity, adults tend to have feelings of being completely out of control. Although some adults may be able to exercise self-control while sitting through a lecture, they probably will not comprehend anything that was said. They may also experience problems with short-term memory and math skills. Studies conducted by Doctor Julie Scweitzer on adult males with and without ADHD reveal a difference in the brain. The men without ADHD had no problem with adding given strings of numbers. However, the men with ADHD had trouble recalling stored information, while processing current information. Symptoms in children may include rage, aggressive behavior, hurting other children and learning disabilities. (Searight ,4) ( Fine,4,5)

The Grapes of Wrath is not only a story of a family that is moving to California and in the process go through many trials and tribulations. This novel represents social injustice in many ways. Social injustice is when people are discriminated against for reasons that are unjust. It reminds me of when people say, "life's not fair", once someone is bias towards anything ranging from a group of people to a few individuals, or an organization, and they treat them in an unpleasant way, it's socially unjust. This is because people aren't getting the same rights as other people are. An example of this would be when black people were thought of as nothing more than trash, and sold as slaves. This isn't fair because they are the same as every other human, but because of their race they weren't accepted.

This novel depicts different types of social injustice. There was one example of this that stuck out in my mind in a huge way. Jim Casey was trying to organize the workers of the strike and the policemen didn't like it and decided to stop him that they would kill him. Going that far to stop someone from doing something so harmless is totally wrong, and extremely unfair. It was also horrible that the police wanted to burn down Hooverville just because they wanted to get rid of the okies. It 's strange that the police who are suppose to protect, and lend a hand to others, were the ones that were going to actually set fire to a town. The police department doesn't have to like the okies, but they shouldn't even think of doing something to put people's lives in danger to drive them out of town.

Today we still have many social injustices. I think that people who are gay or lesbian are sometimes not treated the way they should be. Lots of times people who aren't heterosexual are beaten or are verbally abused by people who don't understand them or don't approve of their lifestyle. This is being prejudice to people who haven't done anything to anyone, therefore shouldn't be torn apart just because of their sexual preference. There are hate group that are open about their hatred to these people. It had actually ruined the lives of some select gays or lesbians that have been tortured from un-accepting individuals. Sadly some have even died from severe beating, or suicide. This is an example of unreasonable treatment towards people that have done nothing wrong.

According to the Webster's English dictionary personas are "individual's social facades" and the root of the word person comes from the Latin word persona, which in their language means mask. Masks have been around for thousands of years. They come in many shapes and sizes, the most well known masks are physical masks. As described in "why do people make masks?" (Sparkers), they have many uses, such as protection or preservation of memories. Masks allow the wearer to mask their true identity. Most of the time these masks are virtual, although often present they can not always be detected. No matter what shape they may take, they always have the same purposes, and when referring to virtual masks, it's often to hide the wearer's true self and bend reality to his or her biddings.

Knowing that almost everyone has hid behind a mask at one point or another, a question that can be raised is to what extent is reality tainted by the presence of masks in literature and society. The presence of various facades, such as the masks of Pride, Courage, and Hypocrisy, often taint reality due to the superficial environment they influence the characters to live in. We can witness this in different literary sources such as Shadow Play A novel by Charles Baxter as well as in society today.

The first mask that tends to taint the reality the characters live in is the mask of Pride. In Shadow Play, we see this mask worn by various characters. We also see characters like Willy in Arthur Miller's play as well as other characters in various books wear this mask. Wyatt, in Baxter's novel is the first character showing evidence of this mask. This facade is transparent when Wyatt gets a tattoo in order to conceal the pain caused by his cousins death. His embarrassment to show his true feelings demonstrates the mask of pride. He is not the only one, however, that uses pain in order to sustain his pride. One can see the same phenomenon in novels such as Find me by Rosie O'Donnell or The Luckiest Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron. Characters in both of these novels seek pain in order to not have to deal with their emotions due to the persona of pride they have been raised to wear. Showing their feelings would show a weakness to their facade which is why they seek to conceal it with superficial pain.
