Following the tragedy of September 11, America has launched a 1st century war to eradicate the threat of international terrorism. Terrorism, long a problem for many nations of the world, was all but foreign to U.S soil. September 11th was the first major attack on mainland American soil since the War of 181. The barbarity of the crime, the toll on innocent lives, and our lack of preparedness for the threat has scared the country to unity, and has scared the rest of the free world into assisting President Bush in finding the evildoers, smoking them out of their caves, and bringing them to justice.

The United States has started in Afghanistan, targeting Osama bin Laden, his al Qaeda network, and the Taliban government that supported and sheltered him. Clearly, this was the appropriate start to the campaign, as bin Laden and his associates were directly responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But Afghanistan is not the appropriate place to finish. Terrorism is not a problem of one man, country, or government. It is a threat that stretches over the entire world and it must be dealt with as such. Terrorism will not end with the death of Osama bin Laden, nor the destruction of al Qaeda, nor the downfall of the Taliban.

Admittedly, the United States swift and decisive victory demonstrates our resolve and power to those sympathetic to bin Laden, his cause, and his methods. Perhaps Lebanon, Yemen, Somalia, the Sudan, and Libya will be scared straight and will cease their support for terrorists who wish to attack the U.S., Israel, or any other free nation. Nevertheless, there is one country and there is one man whom no Afghan adventure will ever deter from terrorism.

Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is the most dangerous man in the world. While distanced from Islamic extremists, he has not stopped developing biological, chemical and nuclear weapons. His connection to September 11th is unsure, but assuredly he would have done the same thing if he could have. Saddam has readily used weapons of mass destruction against his own people. He has no reason to love the United States or the Presidents Bush. Despite U.S. air strikes and no-fly zones, he has refused to allow the U.N. weapons inspectors into Iraq. Can we doubt his willingness to use such weapons against his neighbors or the U.S.?

Women often play important dramatic roles in novels. In Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Crawford, an attractive, confident, African-American woman is an unfortunate victim in two of her marriages. She is beaten by her husband until she packs up her things and leaves. Despite poor treatment, her character and integrity grow and develop. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby takes place in the 10's, a time of rebellious behavior and living life according to the new found American Dream. In Gatsby's novel, the women are solely dependent on money. They strive for it and will go to great lengths to obtain it. When comparing both of these novels, the women are portrayed as greedy, defiant, and trying to find their inner selves.

In The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, a beautiful woman, is very corrupt. She uses her daughter as a show toy. Whenever company comes to visit, she wants her little girl to put on an act for everyone. This is symbolic of Daisy's life She is kept in the closet until it's time to show off for company, then she becomes alive and personable. She views herself as sophisticated and smart, while really she is the opposite! Daisy says, I know. I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything…Sophisticated God, I'm sophisticated (Fitzgerald, 8)!"

Daisy's arrogance is shown in this quote. She seems to be so smart, but at the same time does not know her husband is having an affair with another woman. Daisy married her husband, Tom, solely for his money and social status.

The women in both novels are also portrayed as extremely foolish and easily used by men. Myrtle and Daisy are both excellent examples. Daisy is foolish because she does not know about Tom's affair with Myrtle, and Tom is degrading Myrtle by his selfish actions. Both Daisy and Myrtle rely solely on money and fame. Daisy always tries to be the center of attention and Myrtle is obsessed with money. Daisy blurts out that she thinks a girl should be foolish when she talks about her daughter, "I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool (Fitzgerald, 50)". Daisy uses her daughter as a play toy. She shows her off when her friends are around, but she actually never communicates with her. Daisy becomes very suspicious about Tom and Myrtle. To Tom, Myrtle is a game. He uses her for fun and never intends on having a long-lasting relationship with her. Tom does not treat her with respect, yet she continually returns to his side. Daisy lives in a fantasy world. She can never escape the utopia she sees in her mind. She wants more money, and that's what keeps her alive.

For another consecutive year, Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company takes the lead in the commercials. From sixty one available spots, their products occupied 10 of them. The first commercial that appeared was probably the most liked by the audience. The name of the commercial was Replay and was sponsored by Budweiser beer. I think that with this ad the company was targeting mostly men of all ages, income and social classes. Even though it was a senseless commercial, it at least brought a grin to your face. It was a simple commercial that did not try too hard and was liked by many people. It sort of reflected that simple moments like this one can be enjoyed in life. Representing the brand image was their main goal and I think that they actually did pretty well using their typical icons which where the Clydesdales. Overall, the commercial placed the beer in a situation with so much power that no matter how dumb their commercials get, they stay with you.

The other nine commercials aired by this corporation were not that good. In my opinion, the one described above was the best and it was also different from what they are used to doing.

Pepsi was also a company who decided to try their luck at the Super Bowl commercials. The first product they advertised was "Pepsi with a Twist." This commercial was highly advertised before it was aired and it created many thumbs down after it was seen. The ad portrayed a nightmare which Ozzy Osbourne has involving his family and the Osmonds as well. Pepsi was actually pretty smart in involving the Osbournes in the ad, since their show has been such a success the past year. I think that this ad was mainly targeted to the young audience who follows and watches the show. In this case, the corporation is also mostly selling the brand image. Their ad's objective was probably to advertise the drink, but I think that they did a better job advertising the Ozbourne show. At no point did they describe how the drink tasted or how would you feel if you took a sip. Personally, I think that the production value of this ad was great because Ozzy created major attraction, but he did not do a good job with the product. In addition to that, without offending anyone, I simply cannot stand Ozzy Osbourne.

On the other hand, I think that this company made a great job promoting their new drink Sierra Mist. The ad with the dog peeing on the fire hydrant was hilarious! They were targeting mainly younger people from all income and class levels, since they consume more soft drinks. Also unlike, the Ozzy commercial, here you did get a chance to g

In A Midsummer Nights Dream, William Shakespeare pairs irony with comedy. Egeus, father of Hermia, goes to Thesius (ruler of Athens) to urge him to pass a law that would then force his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius. Though Demetrius desired to marry Hermia, she wished to be with Lysander. This law Thesius would pass would force a female to marry whosoever her father chose. Upon learning of this, Hermia and Lysander decide to leave to elope in a neighboring town where they would no longer be subject to Athenian law. However, Hermia tells her friend Helena of her plans, and Helena, who was once seduced and abandoned by Demetrius, tells Demetrius hoping to win his affections. That night Hermia and Lysander flee into the woods, and Demetrius follows. Helena then follows Demetrius.

Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Faeries, are arguing over a young Indian boy they have found. Shortly after their argument, Oberon orders Puck, a mischievous fairy, to fetch a certain flower that had been hit by Cupids arrow, which had been diverted en route to Queen Elizabeth. This flowers juices, when dripped into a persons eyes, cause the victim to fall in love with the first person they see after waking. Oberon orders Puck to drip the flowers juices into Titanias eyes in order to make her love Oberon when she wakes. After completing this task, Puck is told to drip the juices into Demetriuss eyes to make him fall for Helena.

Now that everything has gone so far of course Oberon has to fix Pucks mistakes. First, he instructs Puck to seperate Lysander and Demetrius, which he does using ventriloquism. After they are both lost, they fall asleep. Oberon applies the love potion to Demetrius and the anecdote to Lysander and Titania. Once Demetrius wakes and finds Helena he falls in love with her. A Hero Of Our Time

A Hero Of Our Time, by Mikhail Lermontov contains four stories about an interesting character named Pechorin. Pechorin's adventures bring out the many different characteristics he contains. One of Pechorin's characteristics that stands out in my mind is his selfish attitude towards women. The story of Bela and Princess Mary, are the two main stories that deal with Pechorin's encounters with women. In the first story "Bela," Pechorin seems to think that Bela is a prize to be won. In the second story "Princess Mary," Pechorin leads two women to believe he loves them. Through these two narratives Pechorin is seen as an insincere and selfish person. However, there are a few exceptions in which he seems to be real in his feelings towards the women.

The impression I get from the story of Bela and Princess Mary is that Pechorin believes getting women to fall in love with him is a game, which he always has to win. Pechorin stops at nothing. He designs a plan to make Bela fall for him, once his plan works he gets bored with Bela causing her great pain. Later when Pechorin decides he has feelings for her again it is too late because she dies. In Princess Mary, Pechorin loves a woman named Vera claiming that she is the only woman who has ever been able to understand him. In order for Pechorin and Vera to be accepted Princess Mary must like him. In doing so I think Pechorin takes it too far. I don't think it was necessary for him to lead Princess Mary on as much as he did. Pechorin only had to become friends with Princess Mary to be accepted. He didn't need to lead Princess Mary to believe that he loved her. Pechorin is a very selfish person, and only thinks of himself. He plays with the women's emotions and doesn't think twice about the heartache he causes them. Pechorin's attitude towards the women makes me believe he wants what he can't have and needs to make sure he can win their love. Once Pechorin gets what he wants he becomes uninterested and shows no more interest towards them. At one point in the book Pechorin even admits to his thoughtless actions. Pechorin asks if evil can really be that attractive. This tells me that Pechorin knows what he is doing in the way he treats the women. I think admitting to being Evil makes the situations even worse. This means Pechorin continues acting the way he does being conscious of his actions.

Pechorin's attitude is one that many people today share. There are many selfish people in this world who only care about themselves, forgetting about others feelings. In today's world people will go to any extent just to get what they want, knocking over anything that may get in their way. Pechorin's character is one that you are able to identify and possibly even relate to in yourself or other people today.

Edna Pointellier is a woman who has followed the rules of her sociery all her life. She was an unthinking child in those days, just following a misleading impulse without question, just as those around her wished her to be (Chopin 1-). When she realises that she is not her own person, she begins a quest to find herself, and in this quest, is alienated from her society. This estrangement only serves to point out the disparity of the female spirit during the Victorian Era and the need for freedom.

Like most women of this era, Edna is unable to make decisions for herself without arising suspicion. Her only true act of defiance is choosing to marry Leonce Pontellier, but even he turns out to be a disappointment who closes, the portals forever behind her unpun the realm of romance and dreams and earns her anger from her father and sister Margaret (4). As Edna starts to realise her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the worth within and about her Ednas father tells Leonce, Authority [and] coercion are what is needed. Put your foot down good and hard; the only way to manage a wife (17, 4). When she starst to make statements about how she could not sacrifice herself for her children, her neighbor claims, a woman who would give her life for her children cound do no more than that -- your Bible tells you so in an attempt to give her a sense of responsibility and family (6). Everything she does is challenged in some way, filling her with an indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some familiar part of her consciousness... like a shadow, like a mist passing across her souls summer day and it scares her, she doesnt know what to think (8).

Without knowledge of her actions, Edna begins to think and feel as she likes. A good example of this awakening occurs when she first learns to swim. She wanted to swim far out, where no woman has swum before... she would not join the groups in their sports and bouts, but intoxicated with her newly conquered power, she swam out alone (6). This statement could also be construed as a metaphor; she relishes her new emotional freedom, rare to women of the time, and wants to use it. She swims out farther than any woman before her, or, she becomes freer than any woman before her, and is unable to handle the burden of her power. Edna began to feel like one who awakens gradually out of a dream, a delicious, grotesque, impossible dream, to feel ... the realities pressing into her soul and the weight of that reality she could not support on her own (41). This is why she becomes attracted to Alicee Arobin; he provides her with stability, without hindering her or her creativity. Chopin, Kate. The Awakening

Nuclear non-proliferation

I feel that this school of thought is a particularly negative discourse, if not a highly pessimistic one! However it would be naïve too ignore it, as it is clear that nuclear proliferation is a highly volatile and explosive situation. This does not warrant the acclaim the media has given it though, as there are far more devastating and relevant threats that are facing the planet already. i.e. HIV/Aids, terrorism, etc

When we critically assess the given texts, it is important that we understand the context of all of them. As they are with out a doubt voiced within and around a specific discourse and ideology. This being that throughout the given texts there are a lot of uncertainty, speculation, and here say. More important than this is the fact that throughout the readings there is a realisation that nuclear weapons bring about a certain sort of power and control. This is formed within the dichotomy of both national and international power. There is a consistent sentiment to this throughout the texts, as according to Singh (18), nuclear weapons remain a key indicator of state and international power. (This becomes plausible if we consider the most powerful countries both economically and politically are the countries that have the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons. i.e. United States of America, Britain all have a substantial amounts of nuclear weapons, this is in accordance with the article in 'Time Magazine.'

It is within this paradigm that the answer too the question posed lies. Most countries that are still acquiring their nuclear arsenals, like India for example are doing so with a particular discourse, just as the United States and Britain have done in the past. This being, to invoke the persona that they too are amongst the elite and thus should have the same sort of perceived power and authority enjoyed by the United States and Britain. It is clearly debatable whether these countries will use these weapons of mass destruction, however what is certain is the fact that with nuclear proliferation comes the perceived notion of security as they are able too defend their borders and as such the state. And this is why nuclear proliferation is not the biggest threat to our planet.

When we examine the reasons why certain countries arm themselves we are able too see that it is done for the sake of protection and not for evil. However this sort of stance would be naïve as not all countries that arm themselves do so for protection. Iraq is a good example of this as they in the early 10's used their military power to invade Kuwait. Where as in the Indian example, they were arming themselves so as to strengthen their borders from further attacks from their neighbours and old enemies, Pakistan.

Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte Review

Anne Bronte is often overlooked in favour of her sisters Emily and Charlotte - the former for her unprecedented power, the latter for her daring met with reserve. Anne is in many ways the other Bronte - less is known of her, very little survives of her, and less attention is paid her. All we really have of her is her writing - her two novels, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey, and numerous poems.

Agnes Grey is Annes second and last novel - she died aged 8 of the same consumption that killed her brother and sister Emily. It is a placid, sanguine little novel - it contains little of the verve of Wuthering Heights nor the genius of Jane Eyre, but it is in its own way brilliant as a melancholy description of Annes own experiences as an educated though poor woman forced into the profession of governance.

Agnes, like Anne, is depicted as a poor Pastors daughter, and a change in circumstances pushes her happy family into dire straits. A naive young woman, Agnes suggests to her family that she seeks a position. They are unhappy about this but with her insistence, allow her to enter the home of the Bloomfields, to take charge of their young children. Her enthusiasm and hopefulness is soon dashed when it becomes apparent that she is to be treated with contempt, allowed little scope for discipline and then denigrated for not keeping control, and detested by everyone in the household. This is her first experience of what it is like to be a governess - and she realises that she will never be able to exercise her good intentions whilst in her unhappy role in life.

Her next job takes her further afield and into no less a disagreeable place. This time her charges are two young sisters, and she struggles to impart some sort of values onto them. She fails again - these young girls are in flirtatious and uncouth, and disregard everything Agnes teaches them. It seems a hopeless cause. By this time the depressed young governess has given up any hope of ever being self-sufficient or of finding happiness. But a happy ending is in sight - a chance of being valued by someone dear to her. Can a woman not esteemed a beauty, nor endowed with wealth, still find her prince?

This is a story of woe that ends happily - this would mean little if not for the fact that all the Bronte sisters died so young, and struggled to find happy endings for themselves. The fact that in their imaginations dowdy governesses could find happiness is important. What they give us is the fact that young women growing up isolated and in intellectual abandon could still leave their mark, could still dream and could still change the world in their own subtle ways.

"The Life You Save May Be Your Own," is a dramatic short story written by Flannery O'Connor, which captures the element of trick plotting at the slightest bit. The reader is fooled toward the end of the story, when one of the three main characters, Tom T. Shiftlet, completely leaves his wife, Lucynell Crater, and drives off to a city called Tuscaloosa. He earned the trust of Crater's mother, also going by the name Lucynell Crater, for two things: to gather as much money from them as possible, and to drive off with something he never could afford to have: an automobile. It is an example of clear deception. In addition, the way O' Connor drops the subtle hints of deception throughout the story, is for the reader to find out toward the end, that Shiftlet is up to no good. However, the theme O' Connor makes is powerful. No matter how good a person thinks they are, sometimes, it is them who need the most help.

The story begins with the mother and her daughter (both Lucynell Craters) minding their own business and living their daily lives. Shiftlet is the outside stranger that approaches them. Almost immediately he begins asking questions about their possessions, creating an impression to the reader as if that was all he was interested in. Shiftlet also used a good strategy by conveying a superficial form of innocence, bringing up many of his philosophical beliefs. Because Crater, the mother, was philosophical herself in some ways, he was able to appeal to her.

During their first encounter, as Shiftlet was looking around the house and offering to fix anything that was not functioning properly, "mother Crater" quickly replied how she had no money to offer, just hospitality and care. This was an effort by mother Crater to see what type of man Shiftlet really was. Just on how Shiftlet appeared uninterested in the topic of money to mother Crater at first, this showed her that he might have been a sincere man and worth trusting.

Since Shiftlet, to some extent, earned mother Crater's trust, he was allowed to stay within the vicinity and fix anything he could. He wound up repairing important resources like the fences, a hog pen, the steps to the house, and so on. To even persuade mother Crater that he was a good man, Shiftlet taught a deaf "daughter Crater" how to say the word, "bird." This act, really won the affection of mother Crater. To invest such time into teaching a deaf girl to say a word, displays some integrity on the part of Shiftlet. As he and mother Crater were talking, he began the "money-taking" by suggesting a new fan belt and new bolts to make the car run efficiently. Even though this is true, what the audience does not yet realize is that this is all for him.

This part of The Wars focuses on the life of the military officers of World War One. It brought out the fact that people from different backgrounds were drawn together for a common cause. Looking back at history, we know that the military in WWI was made up of a few groups of people. The ones who were military personnel previous to WWI, the ones who joined the army due to their patriotic feelings, and the ones who were conscripted into the war. The protagonist, nineteen-year-old Robert Ross, volunteered to join the war, the first one he has ever experienced. Even though he bears the rank of a senior officer that has a batman, he is a rookie at war. He is very innocent; he has never shot another living creature in his life. On the ship coming to war, his first challenged emerged. He had to shoot an injured horse. Given he was an animal lover, killing the horse was truly difficult. But he is a soldier with obligations above all else to the armed forces, and thus carries his task out against his personal wishes.

In this part, there were mainly eight characters. In which, each of them differs from one another. The author uses these eight people to show the diversity of those within the war. Some do things by the book, several carry positive dreams for post-war life style, and others despite their situation keep a pet. Further, a number are scared and believe they were not meant to be in the war.

The first transcript (pp. 101 to 108) about Lady Juliet was really difficult for me. I had to reread and reread it. At first I did not understand why it was placed in the book. However, later I realized that she was one of the people whom remembers about Robert and is willing to talk about him. Due to the fact that she is deeply involved in the story of Robert, Findley probably used her as a bridge for readers to further understand Robert. Moreover, Lady Juliet also gives us the flavor of time. In other words, she is used as a tool to inform readers the point of view of the society at that time.

Up to this point in the book, Findley's writing disgusts me. That is, I disagree with is beliefs and morals. On pages 111 to 112, he indirectly expresses how when boys become very good friends, they can be "in love". On page 112, Findley uses Barbara to explore how women "went through a lot of men and didn't get back to….." This quote gives a reader the impression of how having more than one life-partner is tolerable. I oppose these two beliefs. I do not like how he always talks about homosexuality. In addition, I do not believe it is acceptable to have more than one partner in life.

The settlers of the new world all came from an area which had similar traditions, lifestyles and practices. Because of this, there were many similarities between different colonies in the New World. In contrast, these settlements were often established by people of different religions and ethnicities. This resulted in slight differences in the way communities carried out their daily lives. Two settlements that are simple to compare and contrast are the Jamestown and Plymouth settlements.

Traveling aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, 104 men landed in Virginia in 1607 at a place they named Jamestown. This was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. They chose their spot in a location they thought would be secure in order to avoid the mistakes of Roanoke. Jamestown offered anchorage and a good defensive position. Warm climate and fertile soil allowed large plantations to prosper. Unfortunately, the land was also marshy, humid, and disease-prone. It was on local Indian land, belonging to the dominant chief Powhatan. The settlers that traveled from England were mostly businessmen and not laborers, and fell prey to diseases. Malaria attacked the colony, causing a labor supply because most were either too weak to work or dead. By January 1608, there were only thirty four colonists left. The leader of the colony, John Smith, was the reason Jamestown survived in the end. He organized raids on the local Indians to steal food and kidnap natives.

In 1608 Puritan Separatists immigrated to Holland after being persecuted in England. However, after a number of years the Pilgrims felt that their children were being corrupted by the liberal Dutch lifestyle and were losing their English heritage. On September 160, the Puritans, known as 'pilgrims' before they left, departed with thirty five Puritan Separatists and sixty seven others aboard the Mayflower. The original destination of the Mayflower was at the mouth of the Hudson River, but on December 1,160, they established the settlement of Plymouth on Cape Cod. Plymouth was an area just north of the Cape, outside of the area of the Virginia Company. It provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. Cold climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and trade. The relations between the Pilgrims and the Indians were not bad, mostly because the native population was weakened by disease. The survival and growth of the colony ultimately depended on the natives' help from Squanto and Samoset. Squanto learned English and eased the tension between the two cultures. The Pilgrims had a poor community, but stayed because they were devoted to religion and they had faith. They did not care how they were viewed by other ambitious colonies to the north.

In their sophomore to junior year teens start getting ready for one of the most exciting moments of their lives. This is getting prepared to receive their driver's license.

Because the majority are 16 during this time they could start to take the different steps that will allow them to have their license. These steps are as follows First you should review the booklet that will prepare you for the written exam. The second step is to go to motor vehicle and take the exam. If you pass the test the same day the front clerk will provide you with a permit license. With this you will be capable of getting enough practice behind the wheel. Now that you have your permit the third step takes place, which is going to the 5-hour in class movie. This movie will teach you the hazards along with how a person should react in case of an emergency. The last step is that before and after confirming an appointment for the road test you should keep on practicing.

The first step that should be take place is reviewing the booklet. When you see it you may think how am I going to learn all of this, but if you take it by parts it becomes easier. One of the most important parts to study are the chapters that describe the intersections and the signs, which you are supposed to distinguish such signs as a stop sign or a yield to right sign and what you should do when you see one. Another section of the book that will be helpful is the alcohol chapters where they discuss how DWI (driving while intoxicated) can affect your brain. Questions such as Which drink intoxicates you the fastest a can of beer, any kind of hard liquor such as whiskey, or a glass of wine? The answer to this is all of them could make you equally drunk because they all have the same amount of alcohol. These kinds of questions can appear in the test regarding this section of the book.

When you feel confident enough you could go and take the written part of the test. It'll take you approximately 0 minutes to finish. Although each person is different, some may take less. The day you have this test try to relax don't stress yourself. I remember feeling nervous the day before the test but if you sleep well the night before and you have studied the book the concern shouldn't be much. Before you begin the clerks will call you up by order and take a picture of you. Next they will make sure you have good vision by making you read the black letters that appear in back of them. With this they will know if you need glasses to be able to drive especially during nighttime. As soon as you hand in the test the clerk informs you if you did well on it. If you have a motor vehicle the clerk gives you a temporary paper that will allow you to start driving accompanied with someone who is eighteen years or older who has a license. After you have sufficient practice, you are permitted during early hours to drive alone from school, the job or to your home.

The Indian National Congress is a political party that led the struggle for the independence of India from the British Empire. It formed the mainstay of the Indian nationalist movement and later dominated the countrys government. Founded in 1885 with a base of support chiefly in the upper-class intelligentsia, the Congress originally advocated limited democratic reforms under British rule. As early as 184 the British India Society was founded in Bengal. Later, in 1851 Rajendra-lal Mitra and Ramgopal Ghose formed the British Indian Association. At about the same time the Bombay Association was started by Juggan Nath Sarkar, Dadabhai Naoroji and others. Poona also organized its public life through the Poona Sarvajanin Sabha.

In 1876 Surendranath Banerjea founded the Indian Association in Bengal. One of the main objects of Surendranath and the Indian Association was the unification of the people of India on the basis of common political interests and aspirations. The Indian Association at that time used to represent and reflect public opinion from Peshawar to Chittagong.

The time had meanwhile become ripe for the formation of an all-India political organization. At the first National Conference at Calcutta held in 188 Surendranath Banerjea suggested that an all-India political organization be formed. In fact, while the second National Conference was being held at Calcutta, the Indian National Congress, the first effective all-India political organization, was established at Bombay. The National Conference later merged itself into the Indian National Congress.

Beginning in 105, it called for swaraj, or self-government, and in 10 it adopted the strategy of Satyagraha (non-violent resistance) devised by Mohandas K. Gandhi, who also widened its support into a true mass movement. By 1, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress was demanding total independence. During World War II it refused to support the British war effort, launching instead a "Quit India" campaign that led to violent confrontations and prison terms for about 100,000 of its supporters. After India gained independence, in 147, the Congress controlled the central government and most of the Indian state governments for 0 years. In 155 it adopted a programme of democratic socialism. The party split in 16, but the dominant faction (the New Congress Party) remained in office under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Voted out in 177, it again split; Indira Gandhis Congress (I) Party (I for Indira) was again in power from 180 to 18, from 184 under Rajiv Gandhi after his mother Indiras assassination. After a brief interim, Congress (I) was returned to power in 11 under P. V. Narasimha Rao, but was ousted again in 16 amid public disaffection with party corruption and increasing support for locally based, left-wing reformist parties and the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party.

Assess the impact of War Communism and the New Economic Policy (NEP) on both the peasantry and proletariat in Russian society between 118 and 18.

The policies of war communism and the New Economic Policy (NEP) had a great impact on both the peasantry and the proletariat. Both policies were a desperate attempt to preserve the revolution and this is greatly reflects the reasons why some groups were advantaged and why others were disadvantaged.

War communism was implemented as a result of the civil war. Historians such as Maurice Dobb, E. H. Carr, and Stephen Cohen -- have interpreted war communism as a short-term expedient imposed on the Bolsheviks by the emergency demands of civil war and foreign intervention. According to this version, the system was never intended to last into normal peacetime conditions and had no special ideological significance. While this has since become the standard account, several well-informed economists writing in the 10s, such as Boris Brutzkus and Leo Pasvolsky, viewed war communism in a much more ideological light -- as an attempt to realise Marx anti-market socialist or communist utopia. The features of war communism were that peasant land was seized and then nationalised, however the peasant's control. As insufficient grain was reaching the cities the government introduced grain requisition, excess food was seized with Cheka support, it couldn't be sold for a profit. Large scale businesses were nationalised without compensation; this was extended to all business with more than ten people by 118. All private trade was abolished, and the government controlled food with ration cards and workers were paid through food rations. Workers were told when and where to work, often working up to ten hours a day, and strikes became illegal.

The impact of War Communism was great on both the peasantry and the proletariat. Most peasants were prepared to burn their crops and kill their livestock rather than hand them over to the Cheka, however the dire consequences that resulted in doing this meant that many peasants did reluctantly hand them over. As the Cheka also took the seed grain an acute shortage of food and a great famine occurred during the period 10-11. Peasants resented these changes and there were many great uprisings during this period of time. This included the peasant revolution led by Antanov and the Tambok region in 11. Peasants that did not cooperate were sent to concentration camps and labour camps. The famine of 11 caused peasants to flee urban centres in search of food. The impact on the peasants were that their livelihood was destroyed they had no way of feeding their families and hence dissatisfaction with the government grew. A wave of strikes in Pertograd demanded the abolishment of grain requisitioning, freedom for peasant to run their own farm, a Soviet based government rather than a Bolshevik based government and amnesty for political prisoners.

The Ode on a Grecian Urn squarely confronts the truth that art is not natural, like leaves on a tree, but artificial. The Ode on a Grecian Urn squarely confronts the truth that art is not natural, like leaves on a tree, but artificial as terms of pure, natural, nonrepresentational music prolonged in time. Keats expresses his thoughts and feelings about creation, expression, audience, sensation, thought, beauty, truth, and the fine arts. The Urn is an experiment in thinking about art in terms of pure, artificial, representational visuality extended in space.

The second stanza in Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn" begins with the statement, "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter." Keats views art as something that is eternal and lets you experience what's happening in the painting. While he cannot actually hear the music of the young man's pipes, he can just imagine how sweet the melody would sound. If one was to hear music played, it would only please him for the duration of the song, but in looking at a painting of a youth playing pipes one can take pleasure in it every time he looks at the painting. Of course, in Keats' time there were no CDs or cassettes. In the same stanza, Keats speaks of the young man's lover. He tells the youth that although he is so close to his lover but cannot kiss her, he shouldn't be upset because they will always love each other and they will never grow old and ugly. Keats treats these painted characters as real people, as if they were living in their own world confined to the edges of the urn. He perceives art as something that is better than real life. Keats goes on to discuss some trees whose branches, he remarks, can never be bare. They will always exist in Spring - always green, Keats enjoys the fact that nature remains the same, and in this particular painting, in its most beautiful state - Spring. The two lovers will always be in love and will always have passionate symptoms including fever, heavy breathing, and dry mouth. He gives very real, very human qualities to these two painted beings. Then in stanza four, Keats describes a religious sacrifice of a cow. But he goes on to contemplate where all of these religious people came from. "What little town by river or sea shore,s emptied of this folk, this pious morn? And, little town, thy streets for evermore/ Will silent be; and not a soul to tell/Why thou art desolate, can e'er return. He goes far beyond the reaches of the actual painting, and wonders about how the now empty village will forever remain silent and desolate. Keats ends the poem by telling the painting that it will live on to serve as a friend to other generations when his generation is long gone and dead.

By using his imagination in interpreting this painting, Keats shows us what he thinks about art. A work of art can mean different things to people, but it remains for many generations to take from it what they will. Keats examines art in some general way abandoning nonrepresentational natural music as his metaphor. on My Greaician Urn will be written from scratch, so you do not have to worry about its originality.

From the beginning, the Nazi Party had campaigned against the Jewish people, but many of the people voting for the Nazis did not think they would act upon these ideas. Even Jewish people had voted for the Nazi Party not believing that the threats would be carried out. However it was evident that the Nazi's intentions for the Jewish people would be acted upon, when within the first few days of taking power, the Nazis boycotted all of the Jewish businesses.

Even though little was organised to persecute the Jewish people in the first two years of the Nazi rule, streams of anti-Jewish propaganda were still being produced as it had in previous years. By 15, Hitler had achieved many of his initial aims, and decided that he was now in the position to take action on the Nazi's more extreme measures. He began this by the separation of the Jewish people and the Aryans.

From then on the Nazis did all they could to remove the Jewish people from the German society. A boycott of all Jewish shops, lawyers and doctors all over the country left many Jews unemployed. The amount of anti-Jewish propaganda was increased and began introducing the Nazi's new racist ideas. In May 15, Jews were forbidden to join the army, and by September the Nuremberg Laws were passed. This meant that marriages between Jews and Aryans were forbidden, as were sexual relationships outside marriage. The Reich Citizenship Law made Jews 'subjects' rather than citizens, which removed them of many of their rights.

In 17, more Jewish businesses were confiscated and Hitler made his first outspoken attack on the Jews in two years. After that, they had to register their property making it easier to confiscate by the police and Jewish doctors, dentists and lawyers were forbidden to treat Aryans. They also had to have their passports stamped with a red letter, 'J'.

On the -10 November 18, many Jews were attacked and huge amount of their property was destroyed. The trigger, which started off a chain of events that night, was the killing of Ernst von Rath, a German Embassy Official in Paris, by a Jew. It is estimated that 400 synagogues and 7500 shops were destroyed, 1 Jews were killed and 0,000 were sent to concentration camps.

Initially, the Nazis did not consider the Jews in much detail, as they were still aiming to gain seats at elections, produce propaganda and make promises to voters. However once this had been achieved, they were able to focus their attention on the Jewish people and the more they did so, the more the measure taken on them became extreme. As the Jews were unable to fight back as they did not want to start a war and were greatly outnumbered, there was little they could do as the persecution

An Argument for Representative Democracy

A conversion of our governmental system to an Athenian model would be not only foolish but potentially dangerous to the future of our country as well. It has been suggested that the representative form of government was chosen because of the logistical problems of counting votes in an era with no computers or FedEx. However, in doing research and listening to the biographies of several men present at the Philadelphia convention, it seems clear that the decision was reached with great thought and wisdom.

One advantage of electing an individual to represent a large group of people (and hence several socio-economic groups) is that the representative is beholden to the entire body. Because the representative depends upon the approval of a majority for his continuation in office it is difficult for him/her to favor one faction to the detriment of the others without risk of losing his position. In this way equilibrium is attained in which no group completely dominates another and no minority voice is unheard. It is a credit to the wisdom of the founders that they were able to devise a system which not only accounts for the selfish nature of a man but uses that ambition to its favor!

In contrast, within a democracy the individual owes allegiance only to his own self-interests and beliefs. While many of us purport ourselves to be persons of integrity and fully aware of our civic responsibilities, we seldom hold such lofty opinions of our neighbors. In a country where the poor and middle-class far outnumber the wealthy who would protect the rights of the upper-class? Who would protect the rights of Jews and Muslims to worship in their Synagogues and Mosques? At a time when factions change with the tides, how can the rights of any minority be protected from the whim of the majority? It is interesting to note that we are all, in some way, a minority - it just depends on how you slice the pie. In 188 James Fenimore Cooper wrote, "It is a besetting vice of democracies to substitute public opinion for law. This is the usual form in which masses of men exhibit their tyranny." This seems eerily akin to the "...tyranny of the masses" which Greek philosophers warned of over 000 years earlier. It is similarly disquieting to realize that none of the democracies of ancient times still exists.

Let us suspend distrust in the motives of our fellow man and suppose for the moment that we will all act (read vote) in the best interests of the whole of society. Even were this improbable suspension of belief possible, pure democracy would still face formidable challenges, chief among these being a massive amount of legislation. A cursory review of the 107th Congress web site reveals a mind-numbing workload of Resolutions, 8 Concurrent Resolutions, 81 Joint Resolutions, 610 Bills, and 414 Amendments facing the House of Representatives alone!

Many reactions took place during the time of the Vietnam War. Some people protested against U.S. involvement in the war while others argued that we were fighting for a moral cause. These disputes are always something remembered when looking back on the emotional conflict of the Vietnam War. Many times the reactions and feelings of the soldiers fighting in Vietnam are somewhat overlooked. I would like to recognize this topic on my backboard by devoting the whole section "Reactions Then" to how the soldiers (Both Vietnamese and American) felt and reacted to the war.

After the Vietnam War ended and U.S. troops were withdrawn from Vietnam, many people felt angry towards them and did not respect them. Many soldiers were in mental tatters, and were scarred with images of the horror they witnessed in Vietnam. Even today some cannot forget those memories. Years after the war, the Vietnam Memorial was constructed. Finally people were paying tribute to the veterans of the war. Both of these are examples of reaction to the war. This is what the "Reactions Now" part of my backboard covers.

Hello, I am so sorry to have been so long in writing. I had every intention of getting around to it, but didn't. We had our house under contract early June but still had not even found a place to live by early July. Talk about stressed out! We were to close on the old house on August 1st with the hope of finding something within that time frame. Well, fortunately we found something the first week in July and fortunately the people were willing to close August 1st. We also needed to be quick about things because school started August 1th. The week before closing we had to get a Termite Letter. That was causing some trouble, about $00.00 worth! Closing on both homes turned out fine! We now live in Gem Lakes. It is a two-story brick home with a beautiful and tranquil yard. Everything is just about unpacked and the kids are adjusting to their new school. The school bus actually picks them up and drops them off right in front of the house. We never had that luxury in Riverbluff! Anyway, I'm starting to relax more now.

I sure hope the summer has been good to you. It went by fast and we didn't even get to enjoy it.

Take a minute to read this month's message. This is one area I truly believe in. When we are in the service of our fellowmen, then we are in the service of our God. I have had the wonderful opportunity of working with some neat people in our community. I work and volunteer at the ACTs of Caring Clinic. We help provide medical care and prescriptions for the low income and poor who have no insurance. I have learned so much while doing this. It sure has made me even more grateful for the blessings in my life. I'm sure you have rendered much service throughout your life and will continue to do so. Always remember that service is what Christianity is all about! Take care.

If I seem distant, it's because I find peace in being alone. Life presents each one of us with trials, tribulations, and triumphs that help to make us who we are, guide us down the path we must take. Each human being has been given a wonderful gift - the right to choose his or her own path in life. This gift has been bestowed on us by a being greater than ourselves, and, yet, we have been so graciously created in that being's image. In choosing that path we show that indeed we are blessed in that we have been created to reflect this godly image. Our deeds make us true brave hearts as each one of us takes on the challenges that may lie within that path of life we each have chosen. On occasion we may falter, nonetheless we strive to gain back that momentum to our chosen path. Our willful passion for life and happiness keeps each one of us looking for that bright horizon, that brand new day.

As we look in a mirror and see our own reflection, do we see that godly image we have so graciously been created from? Can each one of us truly say that we have led a life reverent of this image? Indeed not, we are free souls given the most unalienable right since birth, the right to choose our life as we delight. So then why is there no conviction within the self to remain in this delight? The elixir of life should be enough to sustain us in the realm of happiness, but it has not. We are downtrodden by the very same trials and tribulations that should make us stronger. Trials and tribulations that when we slumber should be washed away with our dreams. In our dream state we are given another world to live in. Another world where we can influence the outcome of these same trials and tribulations we are faced with to make them triumphs in the world we wake up to.

In this reality we can now become true to the image we were created from so as not to be held in contempt of the lives we choose to live.

My goal is to teach children how to write a story. I want to inspire the little spark from within to become a fire that cannot be put out once the fingers touch the keyboard or the pen or pencil hits a sheet of paper. When I am in a classroom, I close my eyes and listen to the scratch, scratch, scratch of a pencil writing against a white sheet of paper.
