Hip-hop A Channel For The Urban Youths

Its followers call it an art movement and will tell you, indeed, it is all about self expression. There are basically four elements to this culture we talk about. They are, rap, break dancing, graffiti art and DJaying. It belongs almost exclusively to the MTV generation from teens to those in their mid - 0's. Just like an art, youths all over the world use it to express themselves. This culture started back in the mid 70's in the black ghettos of New York. It limited gang violence there seeing many then decided to channel their anger and aggressions through it. Since, hip-hop has left its gang roots far behind. Its fan base is growing phenomenally world wide, especially here in Singapore. Reflections on everyday life are often expressed in the works of a follower of this culture. A follower, no doubt, is Syukri; our in house graffiti artist of Secondary E4, Woodgrove Secondary. Modestly describing himself as a little kid still learning in the street, he hopes to bring about appreciation from the non followers of the culture. He describes it as a medium to express one's self and recommends it to absolutely anyone who appreciates art as much as he does and creative individuals. One can never reproduce the same art piece as you feel different at every time. He has had a few collaborations done yet he prefers working alone because he finds it hard to share his personal train of thoughts with another person. As Syukri may tell you, colors and strokes are very important in this line of art as they depict to you how the artist was feeling at that point in time. A survey conducted showed that 8% of the student population of Woodgrove Secondary does not mind Graffiti Art pieces gracing the walls of their classrooms yet these feelings are not resonated among the teaching population of our school. Most feel that it is insignificant and does not share any correlation to what we learn in our education system. An Ideal classroom? Perhaps not. Yet, there is no harm picking it up as a hobby. To get started, all you need is a sketch, Pylon Spray Paints (recommended) and an empty wall space. Sketch Away!

management that Frederic Taylor developed in the early 1900's because it wasn't working effectively for the companies. However as Rober Kanigel make clear in his biography of Frederick Taylor One Best Way the problem wasn't with the theory of scientific management , but with the Frederic Taylor and his attempts at managing his own theories. Frederic Taylor was an engineer, a perfectionist; he didn't have personality skills necessary to be an effective manager or leader. Someone how had these skills could manage a company well with his theory. What scientific management really is "a complete method of creative problem solving and decision making." Many of the ideas in scientific management, like setting time goal and streamlining the workload are good ideas and are used presently in the work force. The primary objectives of scientific management are to maximize profit for the company, to use the fullest potential each employee and for prosperity for employees. To accomplish this people must exert themselves to their maximum potential every minute of the time at work. Still many of Taylor's ideas did not work out because there he was too much like a robot and treated others like robots. He was inflexible, and failed to consider human emotions. For example he timed each person with a stopwatch and forced him or her to meet an inflexible and extreme time goal everyday no matter what. The job was not adjusted to meet the person but the person was forced to adjust to the job. Frederick Taylor wasn't capable of managing people under the scientific management theory the way he designed it. His use of the system eliminated the human aspect of the workplace, by treating people like machines. He described people as in capable of working in anything but what they were currently doing. Furthermore he doubled their work load and made them work at the most efficient pace that he conceived of and enforced this by timing people with a stop watch. His essential theory was: management decided what a fair day of work was and made all the decisions. The employees were only capable of doing manual work and were hired only for their manual labor. Scientific management the Taylor way was imperfect because he eliminated the human part. No one can manage other people

Assess the impact of War Communism and the New Economic Policy (NEP) on both the peasantry and proletariat in Russian society between 118 and 18.

The policies of war communism and the New Economic Policy (NEP) had a great impact on both the peasantry and the proletariat. Both policies were a desperate attempt to preserve the revolution and this is greatly reflects the reasons why some groups were advantaged and why others were disadvantaged.

War communism was implemented as a result of the civil war. Historians such as Maurice Dobb, E. H. Carr, and Stephen Cohen -- have interpreted war communism as a short-term expedient imposed on the Bolsheviks by the emergency demands of civil war and foreign intervention. According to this version, the system was never intended to last into normal peacetime conditions and had no special ideological significance. While this has since become the standard account, several well-informed economists writing in the 10s, such as Boris Brutzkus and Leo Pasvolsky, viewed war communism in a much more ideological light -- as an attempt to realise Marx anti-market socialist or communist utopia. The features of war communism were that peasant land was seized and then nationalised, however the peasant's control. As insufficient grain was reaching the cities the government introduced grain requisition, excess food was seized with Cheka support, it couldn't be sold for a profit. Large scale businesses were nationalised without compensation; this was extended to all business with more than ten people by 118. All private trade was abolished, and the government controlled food with ration cards and workers were paid through food rations. Workers were told when and where to work, often working up to ten hours a day, and strikes became illegal.

The impact of War Communism was great on both the peasantry and the proletariat. Most peasants were prepared to burn their crops and kill their livestock rather than hand them over to the Cheka, however the dire consequences that resulted in doing this meant that many peasants did reluctantly hand them over. As the Cheka also took the seed grain an acute shortage of food and a great famine occurred during the period 10-11. Peasants resented these changes and there were many great uprisings during this period of time. This included the peasant revolution led by Antanov and the Tambok region in 11. Peasants that did not cooperate were sent to concentration camps and labour camps. The famine of 11 caused peasants to flee urban centres in search of food. The impact on the peasants were that their livelihood was destroyed they had no way of feeding their families and hence dissatisfaction with the government grew. A wave of strikes in Pertograd demanded the abolishment of grain requisitioning, freedom for peasant to run their own farm, a Soviet based government rather than a Bolshevik based government and amnesty for political prisoners.

The assassination of John Kennedy led to the arrival of another accidental president. Kennedy now becomes the third president killed in office after Garfield and McKinley and Texan Lyndon Johnson became the fifth accidental president in modern American history. Lyndon Johnson was a well experienced politician; this Texas cowboy started his political career in Texas policies and had earned a reputation as a successful congressman. He became the master of political manipulation and the art of power politics. He now planned to expand upon the New Frontier policies of John Kennedy; his slogan was the Great Society- an expansion of the New Frontier. This is the last major political slogan in our modern history and this slogan represents the climax of an active federal government. The Great Society was a drastic expansion of the powers of the federal government. Johnson planned a war on poverty and during his five year presidency, he became the most productive modern president. Yet he is rated only average as president; this is greatly due to his foreign policy which featured the most criticized and most expensive war in our modern history- the Vietnam War.

The Johnson accomplishments are numerous and they clearly show that he worked with congress better than most modern presidents. Medicare- health insurance for the elderly- is considered one of his most important and most significant programs. He is also to be remember as one of the most effective civil rights presidents; Kennedy talked of the necessity of legislation to protect the civil rights of all Americans, especially minority Americans. Johnson took Kennedys ideas and push congress to pass the Civil Rights Act- which effectively killed Jim Crow in American society. Johnson is also to be remembered for the passage of the Voting Rights Act which ended the voting restrictions for black Americans. Johnson is also referred to as our freeway president due to the fact that most of our major freeway systems were built with federal government money during his presidency. Johnson expanded community action programs, low income housing projects and created the Office of Economic Opportunity. This became the government agency for minority programs. With pressure from his wife Lady Bird, he adopted the City Beautiful programs to plant trees and flowers where signs and billboards had stood. He also expanding upon Trumans idea of urban renewal. Effective in education reform, he was resonsible for education legislation which instituted bilingual education in schools across the nation as well as purchasing equipment for classrooms with federal funding. He created the agency for the humanities and the arts and went a long way toward the establishment of Public Television in America. Social welfare was expanded with the raising of minimum wage and the raising of social security payments; he created the welfare program and expanded unemployment benefits. Congress was well aware that an effective politician was in the white house and while this politician was crude, he really knew now to be effective with congress. Johnsons achievements also include major expansion of space projecgts, attack on disease through federal funding for medical research and development of depressed regions. The Great Society was a major expansion of the New Deal approach to government and represents the high point of government programs toward individual citizens.

The Johnson programs at home were limited by his foreign policy. Johnson believed that he could use the same political manipulation in foreign policy. Johnson believed in the Truman Doctrine and in the Domino Theory; he decided to expand upon Kennedys military aid to South Vietnam. Johnson became the president of the Vietnam War; this war was his undoing. Criticism mounted as did the price tag; Americans could also watch television nightly and see that were not winning the war. This war was the undoing of Johnson and the Great Society; the war took away major funding for his Great Society programs. This war was one situation that Johnson could not control. By 168 he indicated that he felt isolated in the white house and he announced on national television that he would not seek re-election. The Johnson legacy in domestic programs is a very important one and a very detailed one, but he is still remembered today as the president of the Vietnam War- the only war that America ever lost in our entire history. The Johnson rated of average is a mixed bag; here is one of the most effective congressman/presidents, but here is one of the most criticized war presidents. In 168 the anti-Johnson votes would be very numerous; Democratic Herbert Humphrey was in the shadow of Johnson. Republican Richard Nixon was now elected president.

Richard Nixon by 168 had made a remarkable political comeback. He had lost a close election to Kennedy in 160 and then he lost when he ran for governor of California. After that loss Nixon announced to the media that he was leaving public office and that they would not have Nixon to kick around anymore. But Nixon remained active behind the scenes in Republican politics and his hard work paid off when he was nominated for president in 168 and elected on the anti-Johnson votes. Insecure Richard Nixon now took over the job of president, always aware of the polls and his overall rating as president.

Every man is born in all shapes, sizes, skin colors, and personalities. The perfect man is not necessarily the prince charming who is tall, handsome, and strong. The perfect man is just an illusion of every woman's imagination, which sadly does not exist. Then what is a perfect man? A perfect man is really the man with the right personality for a particular woman. All women are attracted to different types of personalities. When it comes to men, there are several of those types of personalities to choose from.

One of the personality types is the study geek. These types of men are constantly using their time to study for their tests, do their homework, or study for fun. They usually maintain most of their quality time indoors, ignoring the fact that there is an outside world. As you take a look around these men's rooms, there are several books stacked on their tables and written paper scattered everywhere. Unless the women of these men are also study geeks, they may have some difficulties in taking time away from them. In that case, if they are both study geeks, they can study together and become study geek lovers. Women may have an advantage for being with a study geek because in the future a study geek may become wealthy and very successful in their careers.

Another type of personality is a sports addict. These men are always talking about, watching, playing, or looking at something that has to do with sports. They will know everything about their favorite sports. For example, they will probably know the names of all the players on every team, etc. When watching the game, these men are absolutely glued to the television. They cannot be interrupted; if you tried to talk to them they will simply ignore you. If you do happen to get their attention while interrupting the game, they will become very aggravated. This would probably result in an argument. These men also have jerseys, logos, posters, pictures, and memorabilia of their favorite players and teams on their walls. They will have sports magazines, such as Sports Illustrated, spread everywhere around their rooms. Also when they read the newspaper, they will only read the sport sections and ignore the rest of the sections. These men are in their own world when it comes to sports.

The third type of personality is a car enthusiast. These men can be found in their garage most of the time. In their garage, they will likely be attached to their cars as if they were their second girlfriends. For example, they will talk to the cars and give them names, as if they were human beings. Most men like to give their cars female names because they tend to feel more comfortable. Not only do they treat their cars like humans, but also they treat them as if they were their newborn babies. For instance, these men will wash, wax, and change the oil in their cars almost everyday. They will clean their cars more than they will clean their own rooms. They will not let anyone, not even themselves, eat in their cars because it causes stains on the seats, crumbs left behind on the floors, and awful smells that last a long time. If there was a simple scratch on a car, any of these men will be able to notice it within seconds. They will immediately get their cars fixed because their cars must remain perfect. These types of men would not be able to survive without their cars.

Key Values of United States Culture

The United States has one of the most diverse cultures in the world. A culture that encompasses every place imaginable. As a country, the United States has a very strong national culture. Almost every culture in our country has an aspect that is similar to the culture of the nation as a whole. Equal opportunity, achievement and success, material comfort, activity and work, practicality and efficiency, progress, science, democracy and free enterprise, freedom, and racism and group superiority are ten of the key values Robin Williams identified that belong to U.S. culture. Age and background determine how each value is interpreted. Different generations, as well as, ethnicities can have shockingly different views about similar values.

A seventeen year old person, in comparison to a forty-five year old, is going to have drastically different opinions, as well as many similar ideas, about values, due to experience, peer values, family values, and personal values. Equal opportunity is a principal that our country was founded upon, and is an ideal that is still held with high respect around the country. In this case age makes little difference. Generally an older person has the same view as a younger person. Both generations believe in equal opportunity, and the only difference in opinion is due to experience.

Achievement and success again are interpreted similarly between the ages again. How success is measured is the variable in this case. Every person has the drive to be successful in some respect, what the person does, and how good they are at it is determines success. What is successful for a teen, could be the exact opposite of what and adult would deem successful. For example, a teen who has a high tolerance for alcohol, and can drink well, is considered to be successful by the peer group, but an adult would consider this to be detrimental and a failure.

With success, comes money, and with money, comes material possessions. American's need to succeed also drives their need for material comfort. Most Americans want to live comfortably, and living a comfortable life style involves having wealth. Americas drive for possessions is not limited to one age group. A teen has the drive to possess nice clothes, and good music, where as an adult wants to have a nice car, and a nice house.

America believes that, in order to succeed action must be taken immediately. A mind set like this leaves little time for refection. U.S. is based heavily upon the idea of action over reflection. Teens around the country measure their "worth" by what they can do. An adult who is a "doer" at work will get the promotions, and pay raises. Action is heavily emphasized in every day American life.

Practicality an efficiency are valued heavily in American culture. All things must be accomplished in the mos practical and efficient way. Teens are concerned with finding the fastest way to do their homework, and adults are more concerned with finding time to do things in their leisure time.

America is a culture of the "latest and the greatest,"and progress is of the upmost concern. The youth wants the newest most progressive sports gear, or entertainment system, where as an adult wants more practical and important things, such as cars or kitchen ware. One step forward every day is what America thrives upon.

Science in America is mostly concerned with advancing technology and explaining occurrences rationally. Young people, as a whole, are all for scientific advancement, if they can have softer hair for cheaper, or a new indestructible cell phone. Most Adults support scientific growth throughout America. Science is turned to connect them with relatives across the country family and supplement their social lives.

Free-enterprise and democracy are two principals that are deeply steeped in the culture of America. Most of American adults agree that a leader should be voted on by the people and the consumer should ultimately control the market. The youth in general does not know the extent of free-enterprise and democracy because of the lake of political exposure, and they have never had enough money to have the market effect their pocket money.

Every American values freedom, but sometimes forgetting how free America actually is. Most Americans, young and old want to live their life with as little government interference as possible. The belief that people should be allowed to pursue their personal goals at their own rate is a staple of the American ideal. There are twenty seven amendments to the constitution that concern our rights to freedom from the government.

Racism and group superiority have been present in the United States since it was form. In today's more enlightened society racism is becoming less of a problem. As minorities are quickly becoming majorities racism is starting to become irrelevant. Though this is true there is still the problem of discrimination in our country. The poor, handicapped, and people who belong to certain ethnicities, are still being discriminated against to this day. The young people are becoming less sensitive to racism, because they grow up with less of an idea of what it is and people who are different now not considered inferior. A greater degree of racism can be seen in adults and the elderly, because they were brought up when it was a common place occurrence, and was socially acceptable.

Robin William's insight into the soul of American culture has been proven true many times over. Each key value controls our everyday life, and our futures. Each of these values is instilled in every American by their family and peers, leading to a nation of people who, despite their differing backgrounds, can have essentially the same views on most topics. America is strong, and the proof is in the people. America will unite under our common culture to remain unified forever.

A WOMAN'S PERFECT WORLD

Religion is often used as an excuse for what some may deem inappropriate behavior, or poor lifestyle choices. Many religious fanatics have been known to use biblical quotations, and reasoning's as a way to instill their beliefs on other cultures. Polygamy seems to be one of those choices. This lifestyle is one that has managed to live on throughout the ages.

Some women who choose polygamy would propose that it is an ideal lifestyle. The question is, ideal for whom? At first thought this lifestyle is obviously beneficial to the polygamist husband. After all, with multiple wives, there is always an abundance of women to fill one's needs and to see that all desires are met. He also has the freedom to take another new, sometimes very young, wife at many different stages in his life. These times may include, when he feels his older wife is getting to the point when she is no longer able to bare his children. Sometimes, these new wives are actually chosen by one of, or all, of his current wives. However, who meets the many needs of the women? The answer to that is simple, the husband's other wives.

The many wives in a polygamous marriage are always ready and willing to fill the voids left by the remaining wives. For example, if one wife is forced to work late, there is someone to care for the children, make dinner, and another still to take care of the husband, all without a second thought and all without special instruction(Joseph ).At first glance this situation may seem perfect. Imagine for a moment a world where there is no need for daycare, fast food, or affairs. What happens when the wives looks begin to fade, as they grow older, and possibly are no longer seen as attractive as they once were in their youth? No need to worry about the husband asking for a divorce, he will simply take another, younger, wife. It is the veteran wives responsibility to teach her the ropes. In these families, these women must be lifelong friends. They share the most intimate things in life, their children and their husband. No jealousy can live here. If it did, I would imagine there would be no harmony. How could they possibly survive if there were insecurities among the women? It could become the ultimate competition. They may always be left wondering if the husband preferred one wife over another, or if there were certain things he shared in private with one of the other wives, but not another. Mary Ben David, a plural wife herself of many years, believes only strong independent women can be part of a polygamous marriage, and that many monogamous relationships consist of women who don't possess their own identities, but rely on the identity of the husband(David ). It may appear to some however, that the exact opposite is true.

Cheap research paper on A Womans Perfect World

The chores are usually separated equally. In plural families there are sometimes as many as fifteen children, the work seems never-ending. Some wives work inside the home, some work outside. Career moms without the juggling. No more guilt about working late, or not being there to do homework. There's always someone there to tuck the babies in, nurse them to sleep, and know which is their favorite story. For many of today's working mothers this sounds too good to be true.

If my husband expressed a desire for another wife, this would be a nightmare for me. In my perfect world, it is the man I've chosen that meets these needs. The man I have children with, that knows their schedule, and can whip up an "on the spot" meal. If and when I work late, he will be sure their needs are met. When I get older, and my looks fade, our relationship may change, but he will love and respect me for all I've given and given up for our relationship. We will raise our children together. He will pick up my slack, as I will his.

In a marriage where there is more than one wife, and only one husband, where is the intimacy? Although the husbands reassuringly insist he makes enough time for everyone, and that each wife is satisfied completely, but where is the "partnership"? The plural families argue it is a team effort. Even more importantly, what is if any, the role of the husband? Most polygamist husbands contend this is the style of marriage "authorized by God". They claim "there is no problem in God's eyes with plural families". They firmly believe that polygamy is for women. To ensure they are able to marry the man they want to, regardless of his marital status (Chapman 1). According to USA Today editorials, He usually works, most often a mediocre job, as in the case of Tom Green, a paralegal who became the first man to be put on trial for polygamy in fifty years. A good percentage of polygamist husbands are farmers, or tradesman, as this gives them more time to devote to the church, and their families. Certainly not one that pays well enough to carry the load of so many children. Luckily, he has at least three other working adults in the family. However, if the polygamist husband wasn't fathering so many children, would the family have the need for adult incomes? The women in these families sometimes work from home, telemarketing, or selling what they grow in the garden, and others still hold clerical jobs in town.(Utah's first polygamy trial in fifty years..).

Although polygamy has been practiced for hundreds of years, dating back to the 1800s in North America, it has become convenient, and beneficial for today's working women (VanWagoner 6).Without the need for daycare it must relieve a lot of the added pressure of working motherhood.. The wives always have someone to trade duties with, in case they need a break. Wives in monogamous marriages don't have that benefit. They only have one other person to fall back on, where as women in single families often don't have anyone else.

What if the tables were turned? Maybe a woman's perfect world isn't what these families believe. Maybe it's a world that practices polyandry, a family of one wife and many husbands. Although this is said to be condemned by all major world religions, I think I have a good idea why. It seems like a situation that would really empower women. A life where a woman has sexual freedom without threat of a "bad reputation"being able to chose which bed she sleeps in, with whom she spends her special time. The wife would then become the center of the family. Imagine this for just a moment A world where, all repairs are done in a timely manner. A husband's lifelong friends are ones that the wife chooses. A night out with the boys can be spent in the living room, and the wife wouldn't mind a bit. One husband to cook, one husband to do laundry, one husband to do dishes. There would never be a shortage of funds, or attention. What child wouldn't benefit from multiple constant male role models? Not any that I know of. Maybe women would then be able to have careers, other than raising children.

Polygamy is not illegal. What's illegal is registering more than one marriage at the same time, without getting a divorce. That's bigamy, which is illegal in all fifty states. However, some estimate that as many as 60,000 people live in plural marriages in Utah. The Mormon church, which is famous for supporting polygamy among their followers, threaten excommunication of members who practice polygamy(Bertola 1).

Polygamy is what one makes of it. Those people who are raised in "traditional families" would likely be horrified at the thought. They might find it outdated, possible brainwashing of young women suffering from low self-esteem. These girls are taught at a very young age to choose a man who has "proven himself a good provider" even though he's already married.(Chapman) That they need to share their men, because there are very few "good Christian men" available, Is it possible they don't feel worthy enough to have a man of their own? These women who are raised in a close-knit community are taught, at a very young age that men should love their wives and wives should be submissive to their husbands, may not see an alternative. It may very well be a convenient excuse for what some might consider " selfish working women" who don't want to raise their own children. Could it possibly be a religious shield used by men who want to have an unlimited number of sexual partners without breaking any unwritten moral code? They all seem to be ,God fearing, Bible quoting individuals, who truly believe what they preach.

In our society there are a number of children are being raised in so-called undesirable ways, including, single parent households, or households of same gender parents ,or more importantly, children who aren't even being raised by their own parents and are placed in foster care. Is the traditional woman/man married, stay together until death do us part, family gone? In our society where the "non-traditional" family has become the norm, is there a place for plural marriages? This issue causes one to ask the ultimate question, what is "normal"?

Normal may be the atmosphere and environment to which you've become accustomed . The real questions I'd like the answers to are simple. Can women be happy, and content in this type of atmosphere? Can she really grow as an individual? More importantly, can children raised in plural families thrive, grow up to be well-rounded, and socialized adults. Will they grow up to form plural marriages of their own, or, will they become part of "mainstream" America? Will they have any desire , or need? Please note that this sample paper on A Womans Perfect World is for your review only.
