PHILIPPINE BILINGUAL EDUCATION RESEARCH AND ITS DIRECTIONS

Researches on bilingualism and bilingual education have been hindered by the lack of definitions on the terms related to the implementation of bilingual education. A bilingual is one who possesses a language skill in two languages. A balanced bilingual is one who is equally able to understand, speak, read, and write in two or more languages. Pseudo-bilinguals are those who are more familiar with their native language than with their second language. Compound bilinguals are those who translate from one language through another. Coordinate bilinguals are those who maintain a separate language system for reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Research studies done since the '60's (the Iloilo and Rizal experiments) sought to evaluate the effects of varying language instruction in the primary grades. The Iloilo experiment showed that instruction in non-native languages are taught to pupils beginning in grade 1 and that this gave better results. The Rizal experiment likewise found out, among other things that English proficiency is directly related to the number of years it is used as a medium of instruction.

More recently, research direction have taken on a different direction. Some of which are on the areas of impressions on certain inferences for language education, ethic attitudes , language usage and preference patterns, language use and social interchanges and others.

In Manitoba, 6 teenagers become pregnant every day. This gives us one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Canada, 55 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 15-1 years (www.thinkagain.ca). What does this say about adolescent sexuality in our province, and even in our community. Why are so many teens sexually active? And are they physically and emotionally ready to have sex? Adolescent sexuality has increased whereas the age of adolescents decreases. There were ,05 pregnancies among 10-1 year olds in 1/000(Teen Sex, 00). Teens are influenced by media (television, music, and magazines), peers, parents, and sex education at school. Unfortunately some of these influences don't talk about the risks of sex, and protection against pregnancy and STI's. The final decision about whether or not to have sex or use birth control is up to the adolescent.

When is it right? Most people make a decision about when to have sex for the first time. Part of the decision is asking questions about many parts of sex. There are also questions about the responsibilities and the risks involved with sex. Sex is a pleasurable and exciting part of life. Some risks and problems of sexual activity that affect the body are unprotected sex, disease, or pregnancy. Being able to communicate about such risks and problems is an equally important part of sexual readiness. A teen who is ready for sexual activity needs to understand STDs and be prepared to prevent their spread. Using condoms during sexual activity can be a healthy choice. Females are biologically more likely than males to get an STD (Sexual Readiness, 000). This is because of the way the female body is built. The germs that cause STDs have more places to linger and cause problems in the female body. They must also understand the risks of sex while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The combination of alcohol and other drugs with sexual activity is dangerous. Using alcohol and other drugs makes it difficult for a person to think clearly. For example, a couple may not use protection during sex, or a drunk or high partner may not respect the other partner's sexual limits. A Sexual relationship involves many emotions. Choosing to be part of any relationship can be an emotional risk. When sex is involved, the emotional risk can increase because sex can change a relationship. Teens who learn to understand and express their emotions are preparing for sexual readiness. Another part of being ready for a sexual relationship is setting limits and standards for yourself. Limits are boundaries, or points beyond which someone will not go. Standards are expectations of how a relationship should be. It is important to decide how far you are willing to go before any sexual activity takes place. For couples who choose to engage in sexual intercourse, communication is especially important. Communicating about possible outcomes before they happen is important. For example, couples should discuss the method of protection they will use and how they will deal with a possible pregnancy before they have sexual intercourse. Willingness to take responsibility is a sign that a person is ready for a sexual relationship. Responsibility involves establishing, keeping, and respecting sexual limits and standards. Most teens are physically ready to have sexual intercourse at a young age. However, physical ability is only part of being ready to have sex. Being ready for a sexual relationship in all other ways should be a thoughtful, multiple-step process. It is normal for this process to happen over a period of time rather that all at once.

Below is a checklist of questions you should ask yourself to judge your own sexual readiness (www.thinkagain.ca )

Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn these are the great yet true words from Joseph Addison. The author John Steinbeck was a man, who portrayed a nation during its worst period if time telling about the struggles of its people in Of Mice and Men, and in the novel The Pearl. Both stories were brilliantly written with the unique trademark of John Steinbeck. In the novel Of Mice and Men, the characters Lennie and George are two intellectuals of very different intelligence levels; who stumble upon a job at a ranch that got ruined by Lennie's innocence. The novel The Pearl is folklore of how much a mans life could be consumed by a beautiful stone thatll cause so much hatred and sorrow within him. John Steinbeck has designed his own writing style based thru his detailed descriptions, and brilliant technique of foreshadowing, symbolism, and as well figurative language, all in which that makes him a great writer.

The striking ability of John Steinbeck's foreshadowing in his books is remarkable. "`A mouse? A live mouse?' `Uh-uh jus' a dead mouse, George. I didn' kill it honest I found it dead.' " The killing of the mouse is the first example of foreshadowing in the story that foretells the tragedy at the end of the book. Eventually the object being killed grows from a small fragile mouse to a helpless woman (Steinbeck 1, pg.4). When Coyotito gets stung by the scorpion it gets the story going as well as foreshadows that Coyotito is going to die (Steinbeck ). "Jus' wanted to touch the dress, Gorge" This phrase repeated it self four times. This clued us in to the part where he killed Curley's wife (Steinbeck 1). The indirect suggestion of each of his books by the end makes one realize it all ties up together.

One of the greatest objects in the novels of John Steinbeck is symbolism; significance of objects, events or relationships that make a story a whole and by the end you realize it was all meant to happen. The outfit Kino to wears was white and as Kino was going to fight he took off his clothes. The color white represents the pureness and innocence of Kino; when he took it off he was stripped the last of his innocence. The pearl had taken the rest of it (Steinbeck ). "George unslug his bundle and dropped it gently on the bank `I aint sure its good water' he said `Look kinda scummy'… …Lennie dabbed his paw in the water… he admitted it doesn't seem to be running." The water not running and being "bad" was after Lennie touched it and polluted it. Also the river stopping symbolized how eventually his life was going to stop in this journey. Steinbeck used many symbols that can be taken as just simplistic and normal, however it has a deeper levels of symbolism.

The usage of figurative language in the story made the stories more attractive and alive. One of the most graphic parts in Of Mice and Men is when Lennie breaks Curley's wife's neck imagines her squirming, and fighting like there was no more air. "…the body flopped like a fish…" In a way that was her way of battling for her life but she couldn't the power to Lennie was too overwhelming (Steinbeck 1, pg. 1). "… slowly like a terrier…" There are many comparisons to animals linked to Lennie however the terrier describes him. He acts like an incompetent object, however when he gets scared he starts to attack and protect him self like his animal instincts tell him to (Steinbeck 1, pg ) "Lennie…creeping with bear like moves…" This physical description of is beast like figure, big and fearful look yet at the same time so clumsy (Steinbeck 1)The usage of figurative language in a novel makes us go beyond human characteristic and make us go to our primitive side.

Imagine that it is early in the morning, and the well-dressed young African-American man driving his Ford Explorer on the interstate sees the blue lights of a State Patrol car behind him. The officer pulls behind the sport utility vehicle and the young mans heart begins to sink. He is on his way to a job interview. The stop, ostensibly for speeding, should not take long, he reasons, as the highway patrol officer walks cautiously toward the Explorer. But instead of simply asking for a drivers license and writing a speeding ticket, the trooper calls for backup. Another trooper soon arrives, his blue lights flashing as well. The young man is told to leave his vehicle, as the troopers announce their intention to search it. Hey, where did you get the money for something like this? one trooper asks mockingly while he starts the process of going through every inch of the Explorer. Soon, an officer pulls off an inside door panel. More dismantling of the vehicle follows. They say they are looking for drugs, but in the end find nothing. After ticketing the driver for speeding, the two officers casually drive off. Sitting in his now-trashed SUV, the young man weeps in his anger and humiliation.

The debate over racial profiling has become a central element in a much larger history of adversarial relationships between the police and communities of color. Already-existing tensions between police and communities of color became heightened over the past two decades as allegations of racial profiling by law enforcement agents against people of color increased in number and frequency. Police departments and communities of color are now asking how they can address the controversy in order to improve police-community relations and work to become more effective in law enforcement activities.

The great era of civil rights started in the 160s, with Martin Luther King Jr.'s stirring "I have a Dream" speech at the historic march on Washington in August of 16. At the same time Birmingham Police Commissioner "Bull" Connor used powerful fire hoses and vicious police attack dogs against nonviolent black civil rights activists (Driving While Black). Although these years proved to be the highlight and downfall of civil rights in America, even with the 164 Civil Rights Act and the 165 Voting Rights Act being passed, time has repeated these tumultuous events again in the present.

Racial profiling has been one of many civil rights issues concerning the unnecessary stopping and arresting of people based on race, color, ethnicity and gender. Skin-color has become evidence of the propensity to commit crime, and police use this "evidence" against minority drivers on the road all the time. This practice is so common that the minority community has given it the derisive term, "Driving While Black or Brown" a play on the real offense of "driving while intoxicated". Although many law enforcement officers defend themselves by saying they are fighting against the "War on Drugs" by arresting these law offenders, recent trials and reports show that no basis of arrest have been found against these minorities (Driving While Black). Official skin-color prejudice is still reflected throughout the criminal justice system. Today, skin-color makes you a suspect in America. It makes you more likely to be stopped by a law enforcement officer, more likely to be searched, and more likely to be arrested and imprisoned. Tens of thousands of innocent motorists on highways across the country are victims of racial profiling, and these discriminatory police stops have reached epidemic proportions in recent years (Arrest the Racism).

Hello and my name is Abhishek Karmakar and I am 16 years old. I live in Shanghai and study in Shanghai American School. I am writing this letter to you about the banning of the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain.

I have found out that the school board has banned the study of this book. I am not happy with this because I think this a wonderful book and should be encouraged to read all over the world. It is a book about American literature written in the late 1800's. The book takes place during the mid 1800's and it is widely discouraged by some people due to the racial content it exposes. Mark Twain himself worked around the Mississippi river. He probably wrote this book during his experience in the river, so probably everything in the book is what he reflected on. Lots of African-American people have been offended by this book. They have not understood the book or they have not read the whole book. The novel is about a boy named Huckleberry Finn who runs away from his father and travels down the Mississippi river. He meets a runaway black slave, Jim, on the way and they both travel together.

In my opinion I think that this book is quite a good book. People say they are offended by the word "nigger" in this book. African-Americans read the first few chapters and then stop reading it. What these people don't understand is that Mark Twain had written this book a century ago. In that time it was normal for white people to call black people "niggers." Some critics also say that Mark Twain includes in this book some very rude and informal language. I think that this helps us students to really feel what life was like in those days, how people communicated, so in fact this is kind of a learning experience for me. It really shows me the way people communicated with each other and how the language has developed till today. I don't see why the school board or other people do not see this. A reporter states that "Eighth graders at New Haven's West Hills Middle School will not finish reading a great American novel this year." I think the school has done the right thing. I think we should study the novel but I don't think the school should teach the students as early as from grade eight. This is because I don't think the students are mature enough to read it at that time as a class. I think the novel should be taught at around grade ten and upwards. By this time the students will be mature enough and will be able to understand the book properly and not take it as a joke.

Shalon Bradford, an African-American junior studying in Decatur High School says she was "excited" to read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." She stopped reading it after the first two chapters. Her reaction was, "it's filled with the N-word and other racist remarks." I totally agree with her, but she is looking at it at a different view. She said that "several students in her English class at Decatur High School snickered and laughed at the word." In this situation it is totally unacceptable for mature students to be laughing at these kinds of issues. They should be punished and taught lessons, because laughing at the word it just being very racist and they are showing it to the class as well. If the teacher doesn't take any action against it then the school board should consider talking to the teacher. Dave Matthews, Bradford's English teacher says that "he acknowledges that the book has a 'raw edge' and that some of the language is offensive, but he said the positive value far outweighs the negative," which is quite true and I support his view.

Whether or not homosexuality is biological has never been scientifically proven. Recently, however, there have been more studies that suggest it is not biological. According to Dr. Moberly 85%-0% of lesbians were victims of sexual abuse (Berean League, 11). A man or woman?s sexual preference is determined by a stimulus that causes a responsive behavior. Homosexuality is, therefore, learned. Research has not found enough evidence to say that people are ?born gay?.

Although, at times, studies show that homosexuality may be inherited, after careful observations the study has usually been discounted. No researcher has found any difference between a heterosexual male and a homosexual male that was not caused by their behavior. This says that there are differences, but those differences were responses to a specific stimulus. Even homosexuals themselves say that their sexual preference was the result of social or environmental influences. In 18, the Family Research Institute conducted an experiment with ,400 homosexuals. Eighty percent of those men said that their homosexuality was learned (Cameron, 1).

Researchers have now also reported that sexual conduct is influenced by cultural factors- especially religious convictions. Reports show that there is less homosexual activity among all religiously active groups than in groups that are not religiously active. Men and women raised in homes where religion is not a big factor are four times more likely to become homosexuals than those who were raised in homes where religion is important. What this research demonstrates is that when people believe that homosexuality is wrong they are less likely to become homosexuals (Cameron, 1).

?In a large random sample 88% of women currently claiming lesbian attraction and 7% of men claiming to currently enjoy homosexual sex, said that they had been sexually aroused by they opposite sex? (Cameron, 1, pg 4). When 04 random men where asked questions about their sex lives, it was reported that less than 1% of men had only had sex with men during their lives. Most homosexual men have been sexually aroused by, had sexual relations with, and have even fallen in love with someone from the opposite sex. These studies are illustrating how it is not biological because many of these men and women are also attracted to a member of the opposite sex. Many homosexuals can change their sexual preference (Cameron, 1).

Probably the research that best shows that homosexuality can not be biological is the fact that there are many ex-homosexuals. There are homosexuals who have been gay for several years and then chose not only to change their habits, but the object of their desire. Some reasons for this change can be the result of psychotherapy or religious conversions. In 184, a study reported that almost % of heterosexuals considered themselves to be homosexuals at one point in their lives. If, in fact, homosexuality was biological then these men and women ?born gay? could never change sexual preference, but studies show that many men and women have changed and become heterosexuals. That shows that homosexuality can not be biological (Cameron, 1).

Many scientists are still baffled by the cause of homosexuality. Whether homosexuality is biological or not has never been scientifically proven, but recently more studies demonstrate that people who are homosexuals are not ?born gay?. Many things can cause homosexual desire. Any homosexual experience, family abnormality, or unusual sexual experience can cause homosexual desire. Even a man or a woman?s culture can affect their religious preference. Research shows that homosexuality is not biological, and it can be changed.

Karl Marx made his opinions and beliefs very clear to the world. Through the Communist Manifesto, Marx makes numerous points about Marxism. He also describes his feelings about how the worker is seen and used by society. In the Communist Manifesto, Marx also speaks about what course he sees the dialectic taking.

Marx made four major points in the Manifesto. Historical materialism, class struggle, dialectic, and communists were those four major points. Historical materialism described people think and act was determined by the way in which they made their living. As a result a society's economic system made up its foundation. Also, according to Marx the driving force of history was what people went after for money (the economic change). Another major point was class struggle. Marx classified the two groups that society was broken down into as the bourgeoisie (the haves) and the proletariat (the have nots). Marx believed that political power is merely the organized power of one class for oppressing another. In the Manifesto Marx wrote "It […] has set up that single, unconscionable freedom- Free Trade. In one word for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation." Marx believed that the bourgeoisie made the honored careers of physicians, lawyers, etc. "into just its paid wage-laborers." The bourgeoisie couldn't exist unless it continuously improved the tools of production and everything that was related to the production. Every class struggle was actually a political struggle and the proletariat class was actually a revolutionary class. This was because the other classes would weaken and eventually fade away in modern history while the proletariat is "its special and essential product."

Another of Marx's main points was the dialectic. The dialectic was Hegel's idea that all things travel on a cycle of Anti Thesis against Thesis resulting in a synthesis. What this mean sis that something is challenged by its opposite. Hegel and Marx both believed that revolution was always going and never ended. The Communists were seen by Marx as the "Vanguard of the Proletariat," meaning the proletariat alone was unable to determine what needed to be done. That had to be told and led by the people who "understood the line of march." In addition, the communists were seen as a group that was separate from the general population. "The Communists fought for the attainment of the immediate aims, for the enforcement of the momentary interests of the working class; but in the movement of the present, they also represent and take care of the future of that movement."

Marx believed that the role of the worker was crucial. He felt that the worker was taken advantage of and seen as a piece of machinery. The family of the worker became the economic unit. Poor families must have had many children to make money. They had to provide social security because there was no pension. If a member of the family was hurt then the others had to keep working to bring in the money. "The class of laborers lived only so long as they could find work and who found work only so long as their labor increases capital." Those laborers had to sell themselves piecemeal (piece work) which meant the work was done one piece at a time. "There were commodities and consequently exposed to all the vicissitudes of competition." Marx wrote about how the work of the proletariats had lost all individual character. They became "appendages of the machine [….] The price of a commodity is equal to the price of production. In proportion, as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the wage decreases." The worker was hired to do what was needed, and as soon as that work was done so was the worker. To sum it all up, Marx felt that the worker was seen just as a piece of equipment and society cared nothing for him (the worker).

Hey well just thought I would write ya before I left for the weekend, even though you wont get this any time soon. But who knows how much I will talk to you this weekend.... I am just doing some WASH and then I am going to hit the hay because I still dont feel so great and it sucks because I havent been able to do anything all night. Well I hope you have a fun couple of days with your family, and hopefully I will win our little bet sometime this weekend... you crack me up! Well just know that I am thinking about you this whole weekend, even if I dont get to talk to you as much, but I am sure I will be talking about you all weekend. I will have plenty to tell you though when I get home, its always a riot going down to this lake. But anyhow, I have actually been doing a lot of thinking today, dont get your panties in a bunch its nothing bad, I just have a had a lot of time on my hands to do nothing but think about some things and on top of that I have realized a lot. I feel really bad though that I always get in those moods, and I really wish I could explain those to you because I know it seems like I am pushing you away or trying to push you away but thats not the case at all I guess I just do it sometimes because I want to see how strong our relationship is I dunno I cant really explain it how I want to, well because I dont really know why in the beginning. But the bottom line of me thinking about this is I dont want you to push me away because of it all. I know I never express myself to you, but the honest truth is I have never met some one before that makes me happier, right now I can honestly say I have everything I need right now. I know that when you express your feelings I never really say much, I just want you to understand that it takes a lot for me to express my self, it doesnt mean I dont have those feelings. I almost cry all the time just thinking about things and how much I miss you. I miss waking up to you every morning, I miss laughing at you, and the way you make me laugh, heck i even miss the way you sniff up your nose hairs. I have never really told you this before bascically I think because I really dont know how to say it... but I will give it a try... the first time I really saw you in that great ol study hall, yah i was attracted to you and all that but I paused for a second and thought now thats the type of guy I am going to end up with, but who ever knew that I would actually be with you at the end of year. I pray all the time that when you talk about your future plans that I will be right there with you, i never am the type of person that looks into the future, I am always the person that tells myself I go with what life brings me however I catch myself looking into the future a lot lately. I know you think you scare me away but I pray all the time that one of these days... a long time down the road... that i will be marrying you. ok well I am just starting to ramble now... I guess I just want you to know that I fell in love with you probably two weeks after I knew you, and doing this long distance thing has made me realize how strong my feelings are for you and how much you do mean to me. I just want you to know that I have never had more feelings for someone and i have never loved anyone so much and most of all nobody has ever made me happier.I hate writing all this in an email but you always tell me when it comes to me it does, and i guess I just started writing, even though thats just the beginning, but boy oh boy, I am getting off now and going to bed. Informal Essay on Angela's Ashes Angela's Ashes is a moving book full of poverty, suffering, and death that shows that no matter how difficult things seem, the hard tines can always be overcome. Angela and Malachy McCourt, both Irish, were married in America after a passionate night together that ended up producing their first son, Francis(or Frank as introduced to the reader). Later, the couple had another son, twins, and a daughter while living in a small apartment in New York. Margaret soon died and the family moved to Ireland where their lives were only worsened. Angela had two more children that lived, but the young twins died. Malachy was an alcoholic who rarely held a job and spent his wages at the pub instead of on his family. They were forced to beg for food and other necessities because relatives were cruel and selfish. This novel tells the tell of young Frank having to endure extreme poverty, starvation, and a broken family with strength and courage. He eventually raises enough money to go to America and break free from his depressing childhood. In my opinion, the theme of this book is that no matter how bad things seem to be, anyone can survive and become successful through perseverance and determination. For example, Frank grew up in just about the worst environment possible but was determined enough to get himself to America and eventually become the author of a Pulitzer Prize winning novel! Frank achieved his goals by taking any extra jobs that he could find and saving every penny possible until he could finally afford his passage to America. Because his father never brought home any money, Frank supported the family with what little wages he earned at his job and was determined to make a good life for himself, his brothers, and his poor mother. Frank learned to depend upon no one but himself and his determination to succeed won him a new life in America where he now lives happily married. I noticed numerous literary devices present throughout the book. One such device is the use of apostrophe. Apostrophe is used continuously when Frank speaks to the angel on the seventh step and also when he and his parents speak to the dead children such as Eugene, Oliver, and Margaret. The story is told from the point of view of Frank as he grows from a young boy of about three or four to a young man at nineteen. This point of view is especially effective because it shows how he feels about his experiences as he ages and how he felt at that exact time. His views change as he grows and his naivete vanishes. He becomes a stronger, smarter person with the reader following along. I also noticed frequent use of imagery. Frank describes his eyes when they are infected with "red and yellow oozing" out of them. Vivid images are also used to describe the putrid smells in their house next to the lavatory that was used by the entire street to empty their chamber pots. McCourt also chooses to write very often in the diction of the old Irish language. This word choice adds to the mood of the book and attempts to bring the reader into Ireland. The book is also packed with humor. For instance, when the boys were playing outside, McCourt said that the women stand because "all they do is take care of the children, clean the house, and cook" but the men sit because the spend their time "discussing the problems of the world and wondering what to do with the rest of the day"(107). This is a humorous, almost satirical look at the traditional male-female roles in a family. Humor is also used while Frank waits for the angel on the seventh step and his naivete as a young boy. McCourt's novel is filled with wonderful, descriptive images that help to shape his fascinating tale from poverty to success.
