Toxic Working Conditions

There is a long history of discrimination and inequality in the United States, especially in the work place. Studies performed on African Americans, minorities, and low-income people in the work place have shown that the often toxic working conditions and dangers these people are exposed to result in environmentally-induced diseases and illnesses. The results of exposure to physical and chemical hazards can go so far as disability and even death. Although there is plenty of blame to go around, the majority should be placed on the management of these industries and corporations (and possibly the political leaders of these districts) whose negligence and irresponsibility place many lives in unsafe working conditions, all due to the tremendous desire of making a profit without caring for the well being of their employees.

We can say that many of the people who worked in these industries were victims of some form of institutionalized racism, that because of the color of their skin, gender, or income level these individuals had to pay a high price for their health. Politicians might argue bringing new industries into their cities will enrich the city and create more jobs. Of course these industries and corporations will create many jobs, but at what price? Have these politicians been informed about the types of chemicals associated with, or working conditions of, the jobs coming into their city? How about the resistance to unionization of the new corporations?

For example, where were the politicians when many women mostly of Hispanic descend, during the 70s and early 80s working for GTE Lenkurt in New Mexico were complaining to their management about the accidents, chemicals spills, and associated health issues they were enduring, then being told if they did not get back to work and finish their tasks they would get fired? As Steve Fox mention, "The inability of male supervisors to respond to female complains was partially related to Lenkurt's production-at-all-cost management philosophy, but it wasn't caused by lack of complaints from workers (Fox, 45)." It is incredible to learn that even though the company had that philosophy, the supervisors could not see pass their greed. Since workers were getting sick, and their symptoms were difficult to hide. Anybody would have reactions when directly exposed to hydrochloric acid, xylene, Freon (if this chemical can make a hole in the atmosphere, what can it do to people?) and other carcinogen chemicals. Some doctors ask the women to bring samples of the chemicals trying to associate the many hysterectomies, different types of cancer and respiratory illnesses, and many other related diseases that were incapacitating the women as a result of their working conditions. These health issues and occupational diseases were suppressed from public view; likewise, the pressure and the long working hours were considered to be outside the realm of industrial health and safety.

There are many other examples of minorities who are suffering from institutionalize racism, and it all boils down to greed and corruption, whether it is politicians bringing jobs into the city and the votes they receive as a result of their efforts, or kickbacks they receive directly from corporations for "greasing the skids." In the end, only those in positions of authority benefit, and at the expense of those employees who are left to suffer physically and spiritually as a result of the adverse working conditions.

Unfortunately, maintaining the status quo will not solve the problem of institutional racism. As Cesar Chavez says, "Solutions are not likely to be found through public policy, which require that you place your fate in the hands of the politicians. Solutions can be achieved trough public action, taking matters into your own hands and by taking your case directly to the people (Chavez, 168)." The best way to prevent all of these types of abuses is by teaching workers about their rights in order to prevent more discrimination and inequalities against them. Please note that this sample paper on Toxic Working Conditions is for your review only. During the Victorian era as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created various adventures of Sherlock Holmes, he was surrounded by a patriarchal society. The assumption that women were inferior to men was true of that period. Women were expected to stay inside, raise the children, and perform "social" tasks. Men ate meat while women ate cake, strawberries, and custard (Bird 1). In various Sherlock Holmes stories featuring females, Doyle devises plots that depend on women, however they are often silent or physically absent even though they are vital to the narrative. Females are marginalized, controlled, and contained like colonized foreign subjects (Favor 8). Conan Doyle's views pertaining to women colored Sherlock's as he created three damsels- in distress stories, "A Case of Identity," "The Copper Beeches," and "The Speckled Band," however, Doyle's first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia" reveals opposite outlook of women (Harrison 1).

According to Redmond (8), "all the women of the canon were victims-of the times they lived in….there was no need to be actually a victim, in 185; it was quite enough to be a woman." It is not surprising that these women are not upper-class women as they would hardly find themselves in the sitting room of a middle-class detective. Sherlock Holmes's victims are the outcasts and prostitutes who are socially vulnerable enough to have problems that Holmes can solve; therefore they are the perfect damsels-in-distress (Redmond 8).

"A Case of Identity" is the first so-called damsel-in-distress story in which Sherlock Holmes's role is to rescue a female victim (Redmond 81). Miss Mary Sutherland arrives to 1b Baker Street to meet Sherlock Holmes as her fiance had disappeared on the way to the church (Doyle 48). Mary Sutherland's stepfather Mr. Windibank, had committed fraud as he disguised himself as an eligible bachelor, scheming to claim her income. His disguise involves false whiskers, dark glasses, a whispering voice, and he does not allow Miss Sutherland to see his hand writing. The interest of the story is of Mary Sutherland, and Holmes's and Watson's attitude towards her. Dr. Watson, depicted so far as a ladies man, shows no interest in her. Holmes's however, falls hard for Miss Sutherland, and takes an intense interest in solving her troubles but also in soothing the lady. This is the only damsel-in-distress story in which Sherlock Holmes refers to his client as the "maiden" which carries a sexual connotation of sexual eligibility. Holmes is sympathetic towards Miss Sutherland as he says, "You have been shamefully treated," and when he is outraged with Mr. Windibank, he shouts, "there never was a man who deserved punishment more." Watson reveals that Sherlock Holmes works hard to help the women, to prevent them from danger as they are vulnerable and require protection (Redmond 8-85).

Conan Doyle's second damsel-in-distress story "The Speckled Band," is quite similar to "A Case of Identity" as it is a tale of action whereas its predecessor requires only ratiocination. It is also a story of a young woman whose stepfather covets her profits, and is prepared to go to great lengths to prevent her from marrying. Helen Stoner's stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, is much more violent than James Windibank as he stoops to the murder of his older daughter Julia. She was to be married, and in order to prevent access of her income this had to be stopped. He does so through the use of his "speckled band," the deadliest snake in India. Mr. Roylott also attempted to murder his younger daughter Helen as she was to be wedded, however Sherlock Holmes rescued this damsel-in-distress from the danger of her stepfather. Holmes and Watson exchange rooms with Miss Stoner and prepared for the snake to enter from Mr. Roylott's room through the convenient ventilator and up the dummy belt. Holmes drives "The Speckled Band" back into Mr. Roylott's room turning on its owner and killing him. Through this extreme plot, Helen Stoner's exaggerated feminine qualities and Sherlock Holmes's macho behavior contributes to the stories effectiveness of the rescuing of this damsel-in-distress (Redmond 8-87). Holmes is presented as the masculine hero of this innocent female victim, while Mr. Roylott is seen as the villain, tainted by the East due to Doyle's imperialistic views. Doyle has justified the villain's death, thus, satisfying the reader's desire for justice in this patriarchal society (Favor - 405).

Emily Bronte's life was not a happy one. She never really knew her mother, she never had any close friends, and she never married. Her tragic life contributed to her one and only novel, Wuthering Heights. This book is a romance, filled with tragedy and revenge. So what kind of life did she have that inspired such a morbid story?

Emily Jane Bronte was born on July 0th, 1818, to Reverend Patrick and Maria Bronte. She was the 5th of 6 children. Her mother died when she was just three years old. (Biography…1) Because of this, Emily was prone to writing stories with motherless characters. (Barker 1) After her mother's death, their strict Calvinist Aunt Branwell moved in to help take care of them. When she was six years old, her father sent her and her sister Charlotte to the Clergy Daughter's School, where their older sisters Maria and Elizabeth were already enrolled. This school was "run with the intention of punishing the pupils' bodies that their souls might be saved." (Biography…1) They were punished by being kept hungry, cold, tired, and ill. (Biography…1) A year after being sent there, a typhoid epidemic spread throughout the school. Maria and Elizabeth fell ill with tuberculosis and both died. The father hurried to the school in June of 185 to take his remaining daughters home. (Vine 1)

In 186, Emily, Charlotte, sister Anne, and brother Branwell made up a fantasy world named Gondal. They wrote stories, plays, histories, and poetry about this make believe world. For Emily, the adventures of Gondal "coexisted on almost an equal level of importance and reality with the lonely and mundane world of household chores and walks on the moor." (Biography…1)

Emily very rarely spent time away from home. (Biography…1) In 185, Charlotte took Emily to a school called Roe Head, where Charlotte was teaching at the time. After less than three months there, she became very pale and thin. Charlotte thought she would die if she did not go home, so she sent Emily back home. (Vine 1) She tried other jobs away from home. In 187, she tried to be a governess, and in 184, she tried teaching at a school in Brussels. Both times she missed her home very much and returned as soon as she could. (Barker 1) Emily never really fit in anywhere outside of her home, and, being shy and reserved, never made any close friends. (Biography…1)

In 1846, Charlotte found some Gondal poems Emily had written in secret. She wanted to have them published, but Emily refused. It turns out that Anne and Charlotte had been writing poems in secret, also, so they decided to publish a collection of their poetry. Using their pseudonyms, they called it Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. It only sold two copies, but that didn't stop the girls from continuing to write. In 1846, Emily wrote Wuthering Heights and had it published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. The book wasn't widely accepted until after her death in 1848. She used the pseudonym because she wanted to remain anonymous at all costs. After Emily's death, however, Charlotte finally disclosed their real identities in her book, Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell. (Vine 1)

Their brother Branwell died in 1848. While attending his funeral, Emily caught tuberculosis. She refused any medical assistance, and finally died on December 1, 1848. (Vine 1) Before her death, she had been working on a second novel. After she died, Charlotte destroyed the manuscript, fearing it would hurt Emily's reputation. Juliet Barker says this about Charlotte's action "In my opinion, Charlotte should've minded her own business." (Barker 1)

Emily Bronte's life was a tragic one. But it helped her write Wuthering Heights, one of the great classics. This also helped her become one of the giants of English literature. She is now considered the genius of the Bronte sisters.Works Cited

Wendell Phillips, the American abolitionist of the mid-1800, once said, "Every man meets his Waterloo at last." However, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the American poet of the same time period, wrote in Builders, "All are architects of Fate, working in these walls of Time; some with massive deeds and great, some with ornaments of rhyme." Deliberately shown by the contrast of these two men, destiny has been a greatly controversial topic among people. In the novel, East of Eden, Steinbeck displays many unique patterns, which indistinctly but profoundly illustrate his disbelief in destined lives. Steinbeck uses names that begin with C and A to illustrate that the destinies we seem inevitably born into are not unchangeable. Humans have the choice to overcome their nature and influence their future.

Throughout his novel, Steinbeck conspicuously names positively fitted characters with the letter "A" and negatively fitted characters with the letter "C". Before going into further detail, it is necessary to acknowledge the importance of the title, "East of Eden". With the word "Eden", Steinbeck foreshadows the reader that this book is chiefly rooted from the bible. Therefore, the relevance of the biblical characters, Cain and Abel, to the novel does not cause any surprises. Charles and Caleb Trask are nearly identical to the essence of Cain, dark and rancorous. On the other hand, Adam and Aron Trask are as affable as Abel. Steinbeck creates a conventional pattern in the characters' names the ones with A names are good-natured and the ones with C names are evil-minded. In the book, Aron is displayed as a "boy [one likes] before he speaks and [likes] more afterwards" (4). Caleb is a boy whose "growing restlessness [drives] him out at night. He [grows] tall and rangy, and always there [is] the darkness about him" (44). Similar to Caleb, Charles is shown negatively as "the sleek lazy danger of a black leopard" (1). By observing the evident relationship between the characters and their names, it is certain that John Steinbeck creates the pattern of A names being positive and the C names being negative. However, this pattern is discredited as the novel further continues into the conclusion.

Contrary to the unique pattern set at the beginning of the novel, Steinbeck unexpectedly concludes the lives of certain characters. The outcomes of the characters are absurd because they controvert the archetypal pattern of the names. In Aron's case, despite his A name, he fails to cope with the stabbing truth about his mother and decides to join the army. The unwise decision takes him to a war, then to his death. However, Caleb, despite his malevolent spirit of the C name, ends his life on a positive note. In fact, he strives to gain a great virtue, love. He once prays in his bed, "Dear Lord, let me be like Aron. Don't make me mean. I don't want to be. If you will let everybody like me, why, I'll give you anything in the world, and if I haven't got it, why, I'll go for to get it. I didn't want to be mean" (7). Steinbeck concludes the originally delightful Aron with a tragic death and the originally glum Cal with a positive struggle. Through these unexpected conclusions, a reader can learn that the novel embraces a specific message that Steinbeck has hidden.

By creating the inconsistencies between the character's qualities and the outcomes of their lives, Steinbeck illustrates the value of "Timshel". According to Lee's discovery, Timshel means neither 'Thou shalt' nor 'Thou must' but it means 'Thou mayest'. This significance gives Cain the freedom of choosing to do whatever he wants. Lee says, " 'Thou mayest' makes a man great, gives [Cain] stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother, [Cain] has still the great choice" (0). In the bible, Cain persists in making the best out of his sinful past, living in the land of Nod, building a family and "a city, and [naming] it after his son Enoch" (Genesis 417 NIV). Through his persistence, Cain is able to reach a redeemable, positive life. In East of Eden, Steinbeck incorporates this ability to make own decisions in all A and C characters. Therefore, it is realistic to accept Aron's tragic death and Cal's improvement in life. By defying the pattern, the characters' unpredictable outcomes show that the character's lives do not depend on their initial characteristics, but on the decisions they make throughout their lives.

Adam

Spittle rains from an ever-condemning mouth, rage flamed cheeks are echoed by eyes so contaminated with anger that I can see the blood pumping through near exploding veins. I could laugh out loud at he comical element of this face, resembling an angry cartoon character, eyes bulging complemented by steam billowing from its ears. "Why you!" the pissed off Elma Fudd accuses me the naughty Bugs Bunny. Yes, I could almost laugh if the constant fear of this woman, my mother striking me doesn't constantly corrode my mind everytime she begins to yell and I turn to reals of cartoons like warped Nickelodeons for comfort. Oh, but this time she swears its for real "your going to live with your Father". Yes, ok Mum how about I throw this empty threat back into the basket containing all the classics gathering dust, my favourite being " you'll never amount to anything you lazy good-for-nothing bastard". "You call your Father" she interrupts, " and the you get back in that room and pack your bags". All 6ft of me stare at this woman whose cold eyes still nibble at my nerve.

Cassandra

"Ah, monotonous Sundays" I breathe lazily as I roll over my brain churning slightly at last night consumption of alcohol. Drifting easily out of consciousness it is the shrill call of the phone that slams me against the bricks of reality. Snapping the charade Dad answers, grumpily mumbling "It'll be one of your friends". I turn my head from this remark, and catch snatches of the distant conversation, "Don't cry mate, I'll take some time off work and come up". It all becomes disjointed mumbling… Dads voice tremors as he wakes me the residue of tears slurring his speech, "your Mothers kicked your brother out of home".

Adam

I hate her,

I fucking hate her

These oily patches of anger rise in the water of my thoughts as I shove memories of my present life into a duffle bag. "How dare she lock me in my room" I scream indignantly to the shedding wall s of my prison. Collapsing onto the bed I think of how great freedom will be. She comes crashing in, leaving the door humming on the hinges, "I've decided that your not going, your father isn't a good enough parent". My outrage bubbles at this last mind-fuck. "I want to go" "well your fucking not" the finality in her voice asserts control and seals my caged fate.

Cassandra

" I'm scared" I confess to dad as we near Mums four bedroom fortress. "She cant do anything there are no custody papers and he wants to come". Dad calmly soothes my ruffled nerves. Oh, yes I too still flinch at the memory of my mother, years after breaking free from the circle of abuse. " I hope to hell that she is working," I say slicing the tension. "Yeah, me too". Dads' voice is determined but his trembling hands deceive him.

Adam

Where are they? My nerves create the feeling that a pack of butterflies on speed have been released, stirring my stomach. Again the question, it sets me on the edge of paranoia. Blood rushing adrenal glands releasing a potent mixture urging my limbs to run like hell. My heart thumps in my ears, I wonder if she can hear it if she suspects anything. I glance sideways at her face constantly changing colours in the televisions reflection, blue, green, red this suits her best.

Cassandra

I wait in the car, my palms rubbing in anticipation, feeling like a kidnapper caught in the spotlight of the moon. I watch Dads long figure approach the door leaves swept aside in the storm of parental determination. I hear the door slam followed by a wave of fierce words, which rock the car. Shoving my head between my knees, I clamp my hands over my ears and brace for impact.

Dad

Speeding, swerving down the road my hands slides round the wheel leaving trails of sweat. In the reflection of the rear vision mirror I see my daughter and son embrace, cheek to cheek, the tears of their joyful reunion mingling coating each other's cheeks. Red dots approach in the mirror, sirens signal their mothers' intent. But for the moment that does not matter, all that does is the embrace bonded by shared torment and the elation lighting my face knowing that my children are safe. Please note that this sample paper on creative piece non fiction is for your review only. "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," a book by Betty Smith is a book about the journey through adolescence into adulthood, mainly in the life of a young girl named Francie Nolan. Three main themes in this book are poverty and social status, education, and mainly, perseverance through hardships. These three ideas make up the vast majority of the novel.

Poverty and social status is key to understanding this entire novel. When the book opens, Francie Nolan is 11 years of age. The narrator, Francie, and many characters in the book give their views on the neighborhood in which the Nolan's live, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The author, who writes in third person omniscient, gives you and insight of everyone's perspective to the setting. In all their views, the neighborhood is indeed a poor neighborhood filled with poverty and many immigrants. Poverty and a low social standard do not keep Francie from achieving. Francie and her younger brother Neeley go to the garbage dump once a week, like many other poor children, and collect anything that could be of some worth and bring it to the junk man. He gives the children a few cents for aluminum, and then decides how much everything else is worth. The junk man also gives out "pinching pennies." To receive a pinching penny, you must not move or squirm when he gives you a little pinch on the check. Francie was always very good at not moving, and she always got her pinching penny. There is also Cheap Charlie's. At Cheap Charlie's, the poor children can use their few pennies and get candy and junky little prizes. All these things show poverty in the Nolans surroundings. At school, Francie is persecuted because she is not a rich girl. She has to sit in the back of most classes, because the teachers favor the rich children over the poor children. Even on top of all of this, Francie still enjoys learning, and strives to be very smart, which she is indeed.

Education is also a very important theme in this story, mostly in the case of Francie. Francie is a very smart girl. She goes to the library every single day, and is determined to read each book there, in alphabetical order, and then read them all over again, and again. As stated in the last paragraph, Francie was persecuted at her first school because she wasn't rich. Teachers were nicer to the more fortunate, yet Francie still managed to show how intelligent she was. Eventually Francie got tired of all the unfairness, and while taking a walk in a very nice neighborhood, she saw a beautiful school. She brought her father there the next day and told him she really wanted to attend school there. He said they would find and address in that neighborhood, and write a letter to the principal of Francie's present school saying they were moving there that way the school would let her attend the new school. The plan worked, even thought Katie didn't like the idea, and Francie began attending the new school. People were a lot nicer there, and Francie loved it. She began to excel, and was very happy. She made it through that hardship, and many more before and after that.

Perseverance through hardship is the main theme of this novel. There were many hardships in 6 years of Francie Nolan's life you read about in this book. Her father was an alcoholic. Francie love him very much, and he was a kind and gentle man, yet he had a drinking problem and was not a reliable source of income for the family. Katie Nolan, the mother, had the steady job and supported the family. Money was usually tight, but Francie and Neeley found many ways to manage. During Christmastime, the family could not afford a Christmas tree, and so on Christmas Eve, Francie and Neeley went down to the tree lot, and the man there throws a tree out and whoever catches it and can stay standing gets the tree for free. Francie and Neeley got the tree, and made it through that very happy. There were many instances in the novel where the Nolans didn't have much money for food, and would always get the stale bread, the tounges of meat, the crushed dessert, and things like that. The children were happy with what they could get, and they all persevered throught the hardships of their life. When Johonny dies, it is a turning point in the book for this is when Mr. McShane asks Katie to marry him. He is a successful man and will beable to support the new baby Laurie. The children comment that she will not have to worry about things like they did, but that she will not have near as much fun. This showed that through everything, Francie and Neeley did indeed have fun and loved their Life.

Part five concluded the life of a boy who was faced to join the army and eventually lost his life. The first part of this novel discussed the role that a reader played in the novel, which was a historian researcher.

As a historical researcher, I was to seek to find out the answer to the question, 'What kind of person was Robert Ross?" When asked about Robert, numerous people have various opinions about his personality. After attempting this novel, in my opinion, I concluded that Robert was a kind of person who was determined in some ways, a person who valued the livings, and respectful to others. These characteristics could be proven in many ways. In part one, chapter twenty, the author suggested a flashback to reveal Robert's determination. When he was a young boy, he made a decision to run twenty-six laps around the block. Although he was extremely exhausted, he still tried his best and eventually collapsed onto the ground. By the end of the novel, he was also determined to save the horses that were left on the train, and yet he had no permission to do so. This was shown when he said, "Then we shall all go together" (Part 5, chp 11) Then, Robert held the responsibility of a hundred an thirty horses, that followed behind him. Robert could also be considered as stubborn when he risked his life to save the horses and the dog. He viewed the animals as an essential part of his life. Robert and the animals ran way from Mickle, who tried to arrest Robert, but eventually ended up in a barn. Robert refused to come out and surrender because he valued the freedom of the horses. He knew the horse would not survive in the war, therefore he chose not to surrender to Mickle. Robert was also presented as a person who valued the living in many ways. Firstly, he tried to save the horses to the best of his ability, which was described above. Then in part three, he realized the value of being alive, which was proven when he was thing, "…here is someone alive. And the word alive was amazing." (Part 3, pg. 127) Also, in part three, when Robert was in the crater and he discovered that chlorine gas surrounded the area, he sacrificed his only gas mask to the troop who was suffering from his wounds. Robert was also shown as a respectful person from the incident at the Wet Goods in part one. He was respectful to Ella, although her job was to be sexually active with customers. He did not perform sexual intercourse with her simply because he believed it was not correct. Due to the above characteristics of Robert Ross, I believed that he was not a bastard, which was mentioned in part one, chapter one. He was actually a very generous man although he failed to overcome much of the circumstances due to his human nature.

Both Rodwell and Robert died, due to some form of similar characteristics and their human nature. Both their death was related to animals' survival. They both valued the living animals in ways that others would not. Rodwell could not resist the burning of rats and mice. The narrator also mentioned the suicidal of Rodwell due to his personally love towards animals by stating, "…they'd forced him to watch the killing of a cat….Rodwell wandered into No Man's Land and put a bullet through his ears." (Part 3, pg. 150) Robert also died due to the same cause as Rodwell. Robert was determined to withdraw the horses from the course of the war. His death was obviously due to his human nature and his personal values and morals. In part three, Rodwell gave his sketchbook to Robert, which consisted of various animal drawings, and also Robert, who was the only human drawn in the book. In my opinion, I believed that this was to symbolize the fate of Robert was depended upon or related to animals in some ways. As described above, I believed that both Rodwell's and Robert's human nature and their death were significant in the novel.

During the course of the novel, Timothy Findley often included descriptive sexuality content, which was repeated once again in Part five. In chapter four of part five, Robert was sexually harassed by three other men in his cell. The author often chose to describe such sexually scenes in details. For example, "Fingers dipped down through his public hair and seized his penis." (Part 5, pg. 192) I also found this quite annoyed because of the author's choice to place homosexuality in the novel. Findley wrote about homosexuality in several parts of this novel. For example, in part one, he was in the bedroom with Ella and they peered through a hole on the wall, wondered about the noises from the room next door. And they found out that the noises were from the two guys who were performing sexual intercourse very violently.

Is the Electoral College the Best Way to Select the President?

The question posed is "Is the Electoral College the Best Way to Select the President?" There are two outstanding flaws in the Electoral College and two logical reasons to keep the method instated which will be presented in the following. The opposing argument insists that the will of the American people is misrepresented. Some states are also more influential than others which can also lead to one sided elections. Those who are for the college agree that the process keeps the white house safe from bias. They also feel that the population of larger states is adequately represented. My own feelings on how the "scale" of pros to cons weighs out will be in the conclusion.

Put simply, the will of the American people is not represented in the Electoral College. There have been several elections in which the Electoral College chose the candidate with the minority of the popular vote. Most notably in history was the election of 184 between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. The populace clearly wanted John Adams as president, but the Electoral College decided otherwise. This was a big mistake for the Electoral College, and only one of many. The people were also misrepresented in 1844, 1880, 1884, 160, and 168. In many cases if the voice of the people is heard, it is ignored if an elector is a beneficiary or bias to some president's policy. In short, the middle and lower classes are not part of the triangle which only leaves room for the will of elitists.

The next con at hand is the plight of misrepresented (or underrepresented) states.

Write my paper on The Electoral College for me

As we all know the power houses of the electoral votes are California, Texas, Florida, and New York. These states are just as misrepresented as well as smaller states because of the concept of winner-take-all with each state. California has 55 electoral votes; if candidate A gets 7 votes and Candidate B gets 6, candidate A gets all those votes in California. Technically, 6 of those votes shouldn't belong to candidate B. Every democratic candidate can count on a firm base of 55 votes each election because of the majority of California's political stance and the winner-take-all rule. So with California in the bag, all a democratic candidate needs to do is counter the republican candidate's baby-kissing in Texas and Florida, make an occasional visit to New York and the democratic campaign has a rock solid foundation for the presidency.

The electoral college keeps the election safe from a public bias when compared to the desire of a popular vote driven election. Some say that powerful elitists choose the president that best benefit their desires and that they should not choose the president. This is far from the truth. The theory of the Electoral College was that an educated group of individuals are to be appointed to decide what is best for the country. They became "elitists" because of their education, which is imperative to be an elector that they used to acquire high paying jobs as lawyers, attorneys and various government roles. When the Electoral College was formed, the majority of society was uneducated. This left them vulnerable to a candidate with empty promises or one with a terrible policy and no economic intelligence. In a free market economy, the flow of goods and services is vital to the stability of the nation and the electors had the education and knowledge to choose the best candidate whether supported by the popular vote or not. Most of America is educated now so does that mean a change in the electoral system is needed? No. The system has worked since it was conceived and continues to be thorough and well executed by our leaders.

Lastly, the Electoral Colleges method of state representation accurately gives power to the states that are most influenced by the election of a presidential candidate. Many have complained that smaller states are misrepresented because of the unfair ratio of representatives to population count. The truth is that states are given the appropriate amount of electoral votes when compared to their population because they have little influence on the economy and politics to begin with. So if Alabama's electoral votes counted as much as California's the final vote of the election would not accurately display the will of the American people and give nay sayers a possible third point against this institution.

In my frustrated attempt of Janusian thinking I come to a justified conclusion the Electoral College isn't the best way to elect the president. The theory of the Electoral College was sound assuming that man isn't corrupt and that human nature is inherently good. This is not the case because of the human nature to abuse power. Having a chosen committee to choose the president efficient but many rules in the electoral institution need revising which outweigh the pros. With more cons then pros, the Electoral College should not be the method to choose the president.

Every man is born in all shapes, sizes, skin colors, and personalities. The perfect man is not necessarily the prince charming who is tall, handsome, and strong. The perfect man is just an illusion of every woman's imagination, which sadly does not exist. Then what is a perfect man? A perfect man is really the man with the right personality for a particular woman. All women are attracted to different types of personalities. When it comes to men, there are several of those types of personalities to choose from.

One of the personality types is the study geek. These types of men are constantly using their time to study for their tests, do their homework, or study for fun. They usually maintain most of their quality time indoors, ignoring the fact that there is an outside world. As you take a look around these men's rooms, there are several books stacked on their tables and written paper scattered everywhere. Unless the women of these men are also study geeks, they may have some difficulties in taking time away from them. In that case, if they are both study geeks, they can study together and become study geek lovers. Women may have an advantage for being with a study geek because in the future a study geek may become wealthy and very successful in their careers.

Another type of personality is a sports addict. These men are always talking about, watching, playing, or looking at something that has to do with sports. They will know everything about their favorite sports. For example, they will probably know the names of all the players on every team, etc. When watching the game, these men are absolutely glued to the television. They cannot be interrupted; if you tried to talk to them they will simply ignore you. If you do happen to get their attention while interrupting the game, they will become very aggravated. This would probably result in an argument. These men also have jerseys, logos, posters, pictures, and memorabilia of their favorite players and teams on their walls. They will have sports magazines, such as Sports Illustrated, spread everywhere around their rooms. Also when they read the newspaper, they will only read the sport sections and ignore the rest of the sections. These men are in their own world when it comes to sports.

The third type of personality is a car enthusiast. These men can be found in their garage most of the time. In their garage, they will likely be attached to their cars as if they were their second girlfriends. For example, they will talk to the cars and give them names, as if they were human beings. Most men like to give their cars female names because they tend to feel more comfortable. Not only do they treat their cars like humans, but also they treat them as if they were their newborn babies. For instance, these men will wash, wax, and change the oil in their cars almost everyday. They will clean their cars more than they will clean their own rooms. They will not let anyone, not even themselves, eat in their cars because it causes stains on the seats, crumbs left behind on the floors, and awful smells that last a long time. If there was a simple scratch on a car, any of these men will be able to notice it within seconds. They will immediately get their cars fixed because their cars must remain perfect. These types of men would not be able to survive without their cars.

Insight on the Kinetic and Potential Power Contained within Aristophanes' Lysistrata and Isa from Nobuo's The American School.

The struggle, gain, loss, and expression of power have always been prevalent in literature throughout the ages. The many conflicts brought on by power can often be attributed to cultural influences present at the time. Lysistrata from Aristophanes' Lysistrata is quite similar to and yet quite different than Isa from Kojima Nobuo's The American School. They are similar in that they have a great power. Lysistrata's power being able to influence and persuade her peers and Isa's being the power of communication. However, where they are quite different is in the expression of their powers. Lysistrata is definitely the more charismatic of the two. She is able to use her great power of persuasion to convince her fellow women that by seizing the Acropolis and withholding the state treasury, they can coerce their husbands into finding a peaceful solution to the Peloponnesian War which was raging at the time. Lysistrata's argument was the state was being mismanaged by men and that the women, although they were seen as no more than "love affairs," and the keepers of the "bassinets," of their children could manage the state much more efficiently. A main part of her argument was that they had to sleep alone most of the time because their husbands were away at war. In addition to that, they were being robbed of their children; born to be pawns of war. Rallying her "troops," and seizing the most holy to Athenian temples, her power was displayed kinetically for the entire world to see. Kinetic power is power or energy that was dormant, or potential, and then released.

Isa from The American School is a much different character living in a much different yet, similar time. Where Lysistrata's struggle to acknowledged as a formidable power was during the Peloponnesian War, Isa lived in post-World-War-Two Japan. Both characters lived in a time where war was going on, or vividly remembered. Isa differs from Lysistrata in that his power is potential, or stored power. Isa possesses a skill that is most valuable for a person living in American-occupied Japan. He has the power of communication, namely a proficiency for the English language. In the story, he chooses not to exercise his power, but keep it hidden. This is due to an experience he had with an African-American soldier. The soldier was assigned to drive Isa from village to village to act as a translator. This made Isa extremely uncomfortable, so he chose to speak very little to the soldier, two words, in fact. "Stop," and "go." Another time this trait is illustrated is when Isa gets to the American school and meets the attractive, young instructor. He chooses not to speak, but communicate by gestures. Sure, he can speak English well enough, but he feels awfully embarrassed. Even though his English proficiency lay dormant, his talent is exhibited by the ability to communicate with her without words, or at least, not too many words. Although, Isa isn't really a dominant character in The American School, he has much power that remains potential.

Lysistrata is definitely the dominant character in Lysistrata. She exudes great power through her indomitable spirit. I think she could be described not really as a feminist, but more so a realist. She saw things as they were, a terrible lengthy war that was robbing the women of their men with no sensible end in sight. So, being a kinetic person, she gathered as many loyal women as she could, made a pact bound by and oath of loyalty, and took matters into her own hands. The culture of the time had to do with most of her angst toward the male sex as well as her living environment. The mismanagement of the state coupled with the absence of her husband was too much to bear, so, making her potential power kinetic she addressed the pertinent issues and rectified the domestic situation.
