Edna Pointellier is a woman who has followed the rules of her sociery all her life. She was an unthinking child in those days, just following a misleading impulse without question, just as those around her wished her to be (Chopin 1-). When she realises that she is not her own person, she begins a quest to find herself, and in this quest, is alienated from her society. This estrangement only serves to point out the disparity of the female spirit during the Victorian Era and the need for freedom.

Like most women of this era, Edna is unable to make decisions for herself without arising suspicion. Her only true act of defiance is choosing to marry Leonce Pontellier, but even he turns out to be a disappointment who closes, the portals forever behind her unpun the realm of romance and dreams and earns her anger from her father and sister Margaret (4). As Edna starts to realise her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the worth within and about her Ednas father tells Leonce, Authority [and] coercion are what is needed. Put your foot down good and hard; the only way to manage a wife (17, 4). When she starst to make statements about how she could not sacrifice herself for her children, her neighbor claims, a woman who would give her life for her children cound do no more than that -- your Bible tells you so in an attempt to give her a sense of responsibility and family (6). Everything she does is challenged in some way, filling her with an indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some familiar part of her consciousness... like a shadow, like a mist passing across her souls summer day and it scares her, she doesnt know what to think (8).

Without knowledge of her actions, Edna begins to think and feel as she likes. A good example of this awakening occurs when she first learns to swim. She wanted to swim far out, where no woman has swum before... she would not join the groups in their sports and bouts, but intoxicated with her newly conquered power, she swam out alone (6). This statement could also be construed as a metaphor; she relishes her new emotional freedom, rare to women of the time, and wants to use it. She swims out farther than any woman before her, or, she becomes freer than any woman before her, and is unable to handle the burden of her power. Edna began to feel like one who awakens gradually out of a dream, a delicious, grotesque, impossible dream, to feel ... the realities pressing into her soul and the weight of that reality she could not support on her own (41). This is why she becomes attracted to Alicee Arobin; he provides her with stability, without hindering her or her creativity. Chopin, Kate. The Awakening
