Jim Ambrose, is a -year-old citizen of Monroe but he hasn't always lived here. I am going to let you know what it was like for a kid in the late 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Then in 178 Jim moved to Ohio where he would live at up until he graduated High School. In Ohio Jim lived in a nice trailer park compared to the ones of today. He spent most of his time inside sheltered from the rest of the world. During these times the economy was bad for low-income families. An exact quote that Jim gave me, "My mom cried when Ronald Regan won the Presidential Election." But when he wasn't at home he was hanging out with his friends at the park. Him and his friends didn't drink nor do drugs. In high school Jim was not considered a real popular kid so he said, "The peer pressure wasn't really bad." When he went to the park he would see the cheerleaders and the sports players smoking, drinking, and having sex. "I was a virgin until twenty-one," said Jim. He figured he could wait. In his junior year Jim became a peer counselor for his school. That was when the jocks started to show Jim with a little bit more respect. He stayed in this program in his junior and senior years of high school. Every few weeks he would go to peer counseling camps where he learned about teen sex, drugs, and alcohol. He said, "This was a very powerful experience and partly the reason he was a virgin until 1."
During his teenage years Jim's relationship with his parents wasn't very good. But when I asked him he said "I tended to get along better with my mom then my dad but she wasn't always there for me." One of the bad moments Jim could remember was when Jim reared his fist back like he was going to hit his dad and Jim's dad clocked Jim with his fist and sent him clear through the wall into the bathroom from the living room. But this was just a rare moment.
So as you can tell as a kid Jim was raised in a low-income family who moved a lot. His dad wasn't around much and when he was he didn't show any affection to his kids. Jim's mom would just watch soap operas on the couch all day. But I think Jim turned out all right because he is a very kind and courteous person. He has a great job, teaches catechism, and is an assistant youth group leader.
