The Cambodian Genocide

The Cambodian genocide is one of the most horrible and saddest genocide to date spanning form 175-178. As Cambodia gained there independence from France in 15 the country was controlled by prince Sihnaouk. In February of 16 America started to bomb Cambodia in secret. After a year of bombing a small time communist party the Khmer Rouge, started demonstrations in the large cities such as phon-phen. At that time the prince of Shanouk was visiting Paris, a pro-American general by the name of Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk and joined the communist party of the Khmer rouge. War had struck Cambodia at this point. In April 170 Vietnamese and American troops invaded southeast Cambodia in the look for the Vietcong guerilla fighter in the rainforests of Cambodia. Lon Nol was proven to be not a well skilled military and political leader. Corruption worsened and Cambodians started believing that the country would be better of with the Khmer rouge and past prince sihnaouk. During that time the Khmer rouge was gaining power and falling away form their Vietnamese allies. Soon the Khmer rouge overthrew the over Lon Nol as he fled form the city April 1, 175. On April 17 the first Khmer troops entered the capital with their leader Pol Pot. They were welcomed with cheers and white flags. This was the start of the Cambodian genocide.

As Pol Pot realized his power now he immediately started his Khmer society. He started his society on an eight point program in his program he began the process of taking away all liberties of the people. He started to evacuate all people from all towns, abolish all markets, abolish currency, make monks grow rice, execute leaders of the Lon Nol regime, establish cooperatives throughout the country, dispose of the Vietnamese minority, and dispatch troops to the border mainly near Vietnam. as the Cambodian people were taken from their towns each person was told to write their last occupation so the Khmer could execute enemies and any intelligence that threatened them. Pol Pot wanted to make Cambodia a self-sufficient communist state and as make their revolution a pure one. Soon all printed material, private property, religion. And travel was forbidden. The people of Cambodia became totally black clothed slaves as the country was toiled with a wall of landmines surrounding the whole country. The men and women were separated and all put into the workforce digging canals, harvesting rice, as the children tended gardens. The workers were used from dawn to dusk even sometimes till the late hours of the night. Since the Khmer rouge had discarded of doctors and hospitals, treating the sick was done by untrained party officials or the way their ancestors had don it. This caused a great plague of death. From 177 to 178 the workforce had been severely cut by disease and malnutrition. Enemies of the state were sent to prisons and executed. The most famous of prisons was s-1 in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Prisoners were photographed on arrival at the prison and then tortured until they confessed their crime and then were executed.

The country could no longer control itself. Failure was upon them and they needed someone else to blame. The Khmer Rouge approached Vietnam as their new enemy. In early 177 Khmer raided Vietnamese territory and in late 177 heavy fighting broke out. The war was horrendous and Pol Pot was convinced that his army was infiltrated by spies from Vietnam. on Christmas day 178 0.00 Vietnamese and 18,000 dissident Cambodians battled along the border against 7,000 of the Khmer rouge. Phon Phen was recaptured in two weeks and the reaming army of the Khmer rouge fled to mountains to continue the fighting. The Cambodians before had ever-lasting hate toward the Vietnamese but now hailed them as saviors. During the Cambodian genocide 1.7 million people (0% of the population) lost their lives. This genocide could have maybe been prevent if the French had stayed in power but maybe not, history can not be taken back.

"The greatest friend of Truth is time, her greatest enemy is Prejudice, and her constant companion Humility." --Charles Caleb Colton--

Truth is never hidden in the eyes of God. But in the our world where prejudice and discrimination is present, truth can be manipulated and it's delay can destroy a man's life. To Kill A Mockingbird proves how prejudice is present in our lives and how it masked truth because of deprived justice.

Many scenes made a major impact in the story. Atticus's stance at the door of the jail before Tom Robinson's trial is symbolic of his role throughout the story. The night is dark, like the culture of bigotry and ignorance in Maycomb. Atticus's light illuminates the night, as Atticus strives to teach his community the truth and expose their unfairness. The light is an unusual addition to the scene it would not occur outside the jail unless Atticus brought it there himself. Likewise, without people like Atticus going out of their way to help others, the darkness of prejudice could perpetuate itself indefinitely. Atticus doesn't hold a gun or other weapon, only a book. He protected the basic human rights of Tom and all his people using his knowledge and his experience in law. With his high morals, he did not lower himself to the violent measures used by others, even for his own self-defense. Atticus wants the children to understand that courage has to do with the one's personal goals, no matter what the odds are against achieving a goal. Heroism is the fight itself, the struggle against fate or circumstance or any overpowering force. That courage is about more than men with guns, it's knowing you're going to lose but sticking to your views and fighting anyway.

Atticus's warning about shooting a mockingbird is the first mention of the mockingbird theme. The idea coincides with his distaste for hunting Atticus doesn't want his children to inflict cruelty upon the innocent mockingbirds just because they have the power of the air guns, just as he doesn't like to shoot. His warning serves to emphasize the responsibilities that come with power. Those who have power must be careful not to use it cruelly upon beings who are innocent and harmless. If an animal provokes harm, such as a bluebird, then one may exercise power against it, but the powerful must be careful in choosing whom they target. In the trial of the harmless Tom Robinson, the white people in the jury have power over the black man, and they chose to exercise their power poorly, declaring him guilty, although evidence tells he's innocent, simply because he is black. They denied the justice to Tom. In consequence with this, they have concealed the truth to everyone and made fools out of themselves. They knew the truth but they did not release it. They even destroyed Tom's life and the welfare of his family. They just wasted their power as jury. The mockingbird theme also appeared in Boo Radley's rescue of Jem and Scout. Atticus's preference for not shooting shows that he would like to remove himself from situations of unfair power. Like the gun, the situation of white supremacy is a creation of society that contradicts all that is natural to mankind; it separates men into groups and places one ahead of the other. Atticus wishes to do away with these categories and power discrepancies.

God created us equal. No one is more superior than anyone. We must treat ourselves equally and not judge anyone by his color, height or disabilities. We must learn to weigh situations justly and lawfully. We should not fear the truth for the truth would set us free. We must learn to make a stand on what is true and never be worried of what others would think of us. We must not also abuse whatever power we have. We must learn to humble ourselves and learn that with great power comes great responsibilities. We should use these powers at the same time see through the eyes of God.Please note that this sample paper on To Kill A Mockingbird is for your review only. The question "safety is not related to how fast you go but how fast you stop" can not be answered without looking at the physics concepts involved. The answerer is not as clear cut as it may seem as factors of momentum, that is inertia in motion, inertia, mass, change in momentum, and impulse, all must be taken into account.

The first concept we must look at momentum. Momentum is inertia in motion, which can be found by multiplying mass and velocity. If you increase either mass or velocity, you will increase the momentum, we need to look at this as the faster you go the more momentum you have, and therefore the more dangerous you are, so speed is a danger, which is by no means a safe act.

The second important concept is the concept of impulse. Impulse changes momentum. Finding impulse is attained by multiplying force and time interval, change either of the two and the impulse is different. If you decelerate quickly you will have a smaller impulse, than a longer smoother deceleration. In the topic statement it states that it is not how fast you travel but how quickly you stop, if you were to travel at 60km.h-1 and stopped in 0m opposed to traveling at 100km.h-1 and stopping in the same distance, you would feel a shorter impulse, which makes the stopping 'rougher.'

Inertia is another point that must be closely examined. Inertia is the tendency for a body to preserve its current state of motion, unless acted upon by an external force. This means things tend to do what they are already doing. For an example if you are traveling at 60km.h-1 and stopped over 0m your body would want to keep moving in the direction that it was doing so. If you stopped again over the same distance but from 100km.h-1 then you would experience a greater force of inertia, as your body would be wanting to stay moving at 100km as opposed to 60km in the other case. The faster you go the more inertia you have so you would be more likely to become injured the faster you go, especially if you are not wearing a seatbelt.

To agree or disagree with the topic statement is difficult. In theory the statement 'Safety is not related to how fast you go but how fast you stop,' is correct, but then communism works in theory. In reality all factors must be considered, which the statement obviously doesn't cover. Yes if you can slow down in the same amount of time, you would be safer, however it doesn't take into consideration the effects on the driver. Human bodies are not designed to withstand the effect of dramatic deceleration, seatbelts can be useful, however it leaves vital areas like the neck unprotected, and whiplash can cause severe neck, and bone injuries. What happens if you stop very suddenly from a high speed and you're not wearing a seatbelt, you will stay in motion until something slows you down, which could be your windscreen, or a brick wall, and the effects are going to become worse the faster you travel. Put simply no I don't think that safety is related to how fast you stop as opposed to how fast you are traveling.

Everyone would have their opinions on the topic sentence, and I think that the statement shows us the black and white, which looks good on the surface, but when examined closely has many flaws, as proven above. We must look at all aspects of physics involved and then make a decision, on weather or not the statement is true or not. Personally it has some truths to it, and it is correct to an extent but its flaws far outweigh the few truths to it.Please note that this sample paper on Physics-The Physics of Stopping is for your review only. Annie Dillard's essay Living Like Weasels is a story of her encounter with a wild weasel at a place called Hollins Pond. The pond is a quiet place about twenty minutes from her house where she liked to go at sunset and sit on a tree trunk (Dillard 0). She says I startled a weasel who startled me, and we exchanged a long glance (Dillard 0). This glance then made her curious about what it was like to be a weasel. She wondered what goes on in the brain of a weasel and what does it think about. In that brief, seemingly meaningless, moment they exchanged, Dillard finds something very profound about herself and life and why we should all live like weasels.

Who wants to live like a weasel? Eeuhh! The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of a weasel is the typical stereotype dirty, shady, darting, conniving. Those aren't any qualities I would like to have or to live like. Well, in Dillard's research about weasels (after her encounter), she found the natural principle by which they live. She finds a story of a man who shot an eagle out of the sky and found a dry skull of a weasel attached by the jaws to its throat. And says Obedient to instinct, he bites his prey at the neck, either splitting the jugular vein at the throat or crunching the brain at the base of the skull, and he does not let go. (Dillard 0) Again, at first thought, this natural principle of the weasel is not something I would ever think of to apply to my life. But in a surprising way Dillard convinced me to reconsider my first thoughts of living like a weasel.

She says, What does a weasel think about? He won't say. His journal is tracks in clay, a spray of feathers, mouse blood and bone uncollected, unconnected, loose-leaf, and blown. (Dillard 11). They have a simple life, free do what they want, not really thinking about anything, a certain mindlessness, something of the purity of living in the physical senses and the dignity of living without bias or motive. The weasel lives in necessity and we live in choice, hating the necessity and dying at the last ignobly in its talons. I would like to live as I should, as the weasel lives as he should. And I suspect that for me the way is like weasel's open to time and death painlessly, noticing everything, remembering nothing, choosing the given with a fierce and pointed will. (Dillard 11) Now living like a weasel doesn't sound so bad, right? For me, actually, it sounds just right.

We, as humans, can learn a lot from the weasel. And we have a choice, as the author says, to live any way we want. Her advice is to stalk your calling in a certain skilled and supple way, to locate the most tender and live spot and plug into that pulse. This is yielding, not fighting. A weasel doesn't attack anything; a weasel lives as he's meant to, yielding at every moment to the perfect freedom of single necessity. (Dillard 11) She also says to grasp your one necessity and not let it go, to dangle from it limp wherever it takes you. Then even death, where you're going no matter how you live, cannot you part. Seize it and let it seize you up aloft even, till your eyes burn out and drop; let your musky flesh fall off in shreds, and let your very bones unhinge and scatter, loosened over the fields, over fields and woods, lightly, thoughtless, from any height at all, from as high as eagles. (Dillard 11)

Essay help on living like weasels

Dillard takes her chance encounter with the weasel and paints a beautiful (yet not stereotypical), inspiring picture of how to follow our dreams. It says so much more than Live life to the fullest. She made me think twice about what I really want from life and inspired me to live life with a passion and to never give up on my dreams.

The American Fantasy

The history of America is an amazing one, filled with action, energy, and growth. In the very short history of America, it has progressed from an undeveloped, isolated land to the economically dominant nation that it is today. All the economic growth and progress of this nation is mainly due to the ideal of the "real" American Dream that promotes and rewards hard work. But over a long period of time, the American Dream has become very distorted, and it is the driving force that gives some people unrealistic goals they are not capable of.

The American Dream has changed into an ideal of one's fantasy of an utopian life. But the very nature of this fantasy prevents the enjoyment of the success one has earned because the temptation is always nagging and insisting for more progress and more accomplishment. Some may think that this temptation for more is good but in actuality this only breeds greed for more and discontentment with your present position in life. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is the perfect example of the unrealistic "American fantasies." The novel begins by showing an intense obsession with the American Dream. The characters, especially Gatsby, are emphatically materialistic and strive towards very unrealistic goals and dreams.

It is clear that in the beginning that Nick seems to be inexperienced with the idea of the American Dream while Gatsby is an expert. Having been born to a poor household, Gatsby successfully escaped poverty. Without any extraordinary abilities, Gatsby was able to acquire millions of dollars and some fame in the matter of a few years. The financial success of Gatsby implies that he is well aware of the American Dream and that he has mastered his own ways to make easy money to accomplish this American Dream.

After five years, Gatsby is finally in the position to achieve his final American Dream. He has the money, the house, the social connections and everything was in place for him to finally realize his aspiration Daisy. And yet, when he finally gets the chance to reunite with Daisy, he did not find any great happiness, only disappointment. Gatsby was not satisfied yet. Gatsby tries to recreate the past and wants Daisy to divorce Tom. But Gatsby's discontent only lasts for a short while. He is murdered in revenge for an accident he never committed.

It is my American Dream to become a doctor and live a comfortable life. I don't want to strive to become a millionaire or live in a mansion of any sort but, I would like to live in an nice home. I also would like an expensive, beautiful car. But the most important thing is that these materialistic goals are not the basis of what I want to do or achieve. I think my American Dream is a "real" American Dream because it is not a fantasy. I can accomplish it if I work hard and try my best. It is also realistic since I think I am capable of doing it through hard work. Becoming a doctor requires a lot of time, hard work and patience, not to mention, the financial burden involved. But it is still what I want to do in life. Furthermore, I will be content once I accomplish my goal. I won't be greedy or discontent and strive for something in dishonest or unrealistic ways like Gatsby.

One's desire to live the fantasy created by his/her dreams is the very force that makes the achievement of his/her fantasy impossible. Gatsby based his entire existence on a dream and became obsessed with what he did not have instead of enjoying his accomplishments. The American Dream is not a means to an end, rather, it is a way of American life ,and it will always be one step out of reach.

The Great Gatsby!
