Our topic is on friction and what it is. So what is friction? Friction is the "evil" of all motion. No matter which direction an object moves in, friction will pull it the other way. Move something right, friction pulls it left. Move something up, friction pulls it down.

Friction depends partly on the smoothness of the contacting surfaces, a greater force being needed to move two surfaces past one another if they are rough than if they are smooth. Although two objects might look smooth, microscopically, they're very rough and jagged. However, friction decreases with smoothness only to a certain degree. Friction actually increases between two extremely smooth surfaces because of increased attractive electrostatic forces between their atoms. Friction does not depend on the amount of surface area that are in contact between the moving bodies or on the relative speed of the bodies. What it does depend on though, is the magnitude of the forces holding the two bodies together. When a body is moving over a horizontal surface, it presses down against the surface with a force equal to its weight. An increase in the weight of the body creates more resistance, so there is more friction.

Friction is not all bad. It has a lot do with life as we know it on Earth. Without friction, we wouldn't be able to do a lot of the things that we need to do. So why do we need friction? It's friction that enables us to walk, among other things. Friction is what keeps one foot planted on the ground as the other one steps forward. Otherwise, without friction, the shift in weight would cause us to slide around. Also most braking systems use friction as their main component. When you squeeze the brakes on a 10-speed bike, a small rubber brake is pressed against both sides of the bike tire. The friction of the brake pad against the wheel causes the rotation of the wheel to slow down to a stop.

There are two types of friction, "static friction" and "kinetic friction". Static friction is the frictional force that is created when trying to put an object into motion when it is at rest. Kinetic friction is the frictional force that tends to slow a body down when it is in motion. In most cases, static friction is greater than kinetic friction. The force do to kinetic friction is generally proportional to the force applied. In that case, a "coefficient of friction" is the ratio of frictional force to the normal force on the object. Here is an example for kinetic friction I need to move a big cardboard box full of books from my garage to my car, which is on the driveway. I decide its easier to push the box than to pick it up. It works pretty well when I am on my garage floor. But when I get to the driveway, I have some problems. The box is really hard to push because the cement is so rough. I come up with an easy solution -- I decide to take some books out of the box. Now, I can make it to my car. Here is an example of static friction I decide to put twice as many books into my box, making it twice as heavy. This time, I can hardly make the box start moving, so I really have to lean into it. Once I finally get it to start moving, though, its not as hard to push.

management of the Colorado

ɨ The Colorado has been used as a source of water for over 000 years.

ɨ During the last 100 years, it has changes from an uncontrolled river passing through a semi-desert.

ɨ The Colorado water is now controlled by 11 major damns in 7 states and Mexico, produces 10miilion kw of electricity and irrigates 800 000 hectares of farmland.

Characteristics of the river.

ɨ The river rises in the snowfield of the Rockies, where the annual precipitation may be as much as 540mm of snow during the winter.

ɨ Temperatures throughout the Colorado basin are high during the summer, which means that there is a net loss of water through evaporation.

ɨ Evapotranspiration can be as high as 180mm per anum.

ɨ The snow meltwater is essential to the maintenance of the flow of the river, which is at its highest in April and May.

ɨ The lower basin had been liable to flood, with disastrous consequences in the period 105-0, when the river burst its banks.

ɨ The river contains a high sediment load. Colorado means red colour, and it rarely has a clear appearance except in its mountain reaches. This means it is unsuitable for public water supply in its natural state.

Population growth in the Southwest.

ɨ The west and the Southwest have attracted people from the declining industrial areas of the Northeast. The Southwest in becoming more urban.

ɨ California's population has increased rapidly, creating a huge demand for water.

ɨ 70% of the water for San Diego is piped daily from the Colorado.

Why is there a need to manage the basin?

ɨ The river flows between 7 states and Mexico.

ɨ The demand of the states are different, although the greatest perceived need is for hydro-electric power to supply the towns and the farms of the region.

ɨ River water is used for irrigation throughout the basin.

How is the river being managed?

ɨ Management is through a number of federal and state funded projects, some of which are multi-purpose.

ɨ The 1st of the large schemes was the Hoover dam. Its primary purpose was to control the flow of the river, with the provision of hydro-electric power being seen as a means of paying the huge costs of construction

ɨ More great dams were planned on the river and their primary aim was to provide HEP., then flow control and irrigation

How effective was the management?

ɨ The issue of water supply to the farmers of Baja California was partly resolved after he construction of the Yuma and Morelos Dams

ɨ Irrigation water from the districts close to the Mexican border is returned to the river, but with a high saline content so that farmers in Mexico are disadvantaged.

ɨ Insufficient water of quality is forcing Mexican farmers to leave 0% of their land uncultivated.

ɨ The Colorado delta is now wasteland. Until the river was controlled, it was home to birds such as the egret, to wild cats, marine species and to marine grasses, which used to thrive in the interface between land and the sea.

ɨ There are now few communities attempting to make a life in this area. Please note that this sample paper on managing the colorado river is for your review only. Does the movie "American Beauty" totally destroy the idea of what American gender roles are? Let me start off by stating what I feel the gender roles are in America. The male gender seems to take care of the money that is brought into the home. He is strong natured, and never shows emotion. The male seems to talk down to his children, in ways to make them better people, again going back to not showing emotion. The female is, for the most part a housewife that takes care of the children. She works but makes less than the male. Women tell children what they want to hear to make them feel good about themselves. So how can characters in a movie that is often compared to the American dream itself destroy the idea of gender roles?

The character Lester in this family does not follow the male gender role. In fact it's the opposite; he follows the female gender role. Lester does not have the respect you would expect a father to have from his family. An example of this is when the family eats dinner; none of the other family members even ask he how his day was or even listen to him. "Can you pass the asparagus?" I feel this is due to the fact that Lester doesn't have an important job; he works at a desk talking on a phone similar to a secretary, which is stereotypically a woman's job. Lester also is the parent that reaches out to his daughter Jane. He tells her things that make her feel good as a person. Lester is not your idea of the typical American family man. He gets no respect from his family, works at a simple job, and is the only one who reaches out to Jane. That will all change soon enough though.

Similar to Lester, his wife Carolyn follows the opposite gender role. In the film, she fills the gender role of a male. Carolyn wears the pants in this family. The whole event of dinner revolves around her. They listen to her music; eat what she makes, and talk about her day at work. Carolyn is also an independent worker; she runs her company by herself with no help from anyone. She even hates herself for showing an emotion linked to weakness, when she cries over not selling a house. She even carries and enjoys shooting a gun, a male stereotype of the lust for power. Carolyn treats Jane similar to how a father would treat his child. She talks down to Jane while at the same time trying to help her out "Are you trying to look unattractive?" Carolyn is the embodiment of the male gender role. She wears the pants in the family, is independent, is afraid to show emotions, and talks down to her daughter. Carolyn is the model for the gender role of an American man.

So is anyone in this movie in tune with his or her gender role? Ricky is a character that seems to be the closest. He is in touch with both the male and female gender roles found in American society. Ricky's softer female side appears when he is behind his camera. But even behind the camera he is, as Jane puts it, "confident" which relates to the male gender role. Ricky also shows strong leadership qualities at the end of the movie when he leaves home to go to New York with Jane. Ricky shows both a male and female side throughout the movie. He better watch out or someone might think he's gay.

The Women that Influenced Ernest Hemingway's Writing

Ernest Hemingway was born on July 1, 18 at his grandfather's home in Oak Park, Chicago. He was the oldest male of six children. With such a large family, Ed and Grace Hemingway ran a strict household, but they did allow their children to enjoy themselves. Ernest loved the outdoors. Him and his father found themselves at Bear Lake many times throughout the early years of Ernest's life, but as he got older, Ernest became more of a ladies man. Ernest was married four times and rejected once by an older woman. These five women were the reason for most of Ernest Hemingway's literature. (Hulse)

In 1, Ernest Hemingway wrote "his first major commercial success," A Farewell to Arms (Flora 180). This novel is about a wounded World War I soldier that had an affair with his nurse. Hemingway wrote this novel eleven years after meeting his first true love, Agnes Von Kurowsky. Hemingway fell in love with Agnes while he was under her care at the Milan Red Cross hospital. Despite the fact that they saw each other everyday, Agnes wrote Hemingway daily. She called him "'Kid' and herself 'Mrs. Kid' and kept a picture of him in her pocket," (Hulse 10). Agnes did like Hemingway, but she did not let herself fall in love with him because she was committed to nursing and she felt as if the "'wartime' romance would not last," (Hulse 10). When Agnes left Milan, they wrote each other three or four times a day, but when they reunited, Agnes "persuaded Hemingway to return to his home," (Hulse 11). She had made him believe that in two years they would get married, but then she sent him a "rejection letter," (Hulse 11). Because of all of these events, Hemingway wrote Three Stories and Ten Poems, a series of stories about the love and rejection of his first true love.

In 11, Ernest Hemingway married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson. The couple shortly moved to Paris to look for work. They sent letters home telling their families about the lovely place that they were living in, but in reality, it was small and not very clean. Hemingway decided to start writing. The couple lived off of Hadley's trust fund; this allowed them to travel too. Hemingway focused some of his literature on their trips to other countries, for instance, The Sun Also Rise focuses on his and Hadleys' trip to Spain. He also wrote The Torrents of Spring, another piece about their traveling adventures together. By the time Hemingway's first son was born, he was a full time author. Hemingway's marriage to Hadley did not last but five years. He had an affair with an editor named Pauline Pfeiffer. Hemingway was remorseful for what he had done, so he dedicated The Sun Also Rises to Hadley and his son, John. "It was, he said, the least he could do," (Hulse 14). This was Hemingway's first affair, but little did he know that he would have quit a few during his lifetime. (Stephens).
