Anne Bronte is often overlooked in favour of her sisters Emily and Charlotte - the former for her unprecedented power, the latter for her daring met with reserve. Agnes Grey is Annes second and last novel - she died aged 8 of the same consumption that killed her brother and sister Emily. It is a placid, sanguine little novel - it contains little of the verve of Wuthering Heights nor the genius of Jane Eyre, but it is in its own way brilliant as a melancholy description of Annes own experiences as an educated though poor woman forced into the profession of governance.


Agnes, like Anne, is depicted as a poor Pastors daughter, and a change in circumstances pushes her happy family into dire straits. A naive young woman, Agnes suggests to her family that she seeks a position. They are unhappy about this but with her insistence, allow her to enter the home of the Bloomfields, to take charge of their young children. Her enthusiasm and hopefulness is soon dashed when it becomes apparent that she is to be treated with contempt, allowed little scope for discipline and then denigrated for not keeping control, and detested by everyone in the household. This is her first experience of what it is like to be a governess - and she realises that she will never be able to exercise her good intentions whilst in her unhappy role in life.


Her next job takes her further afield and into no less a disagreeable place. This time her charges are two young sisters, and she struggles to impart some sort of values onto them. She fails again - these young girls are in flirtatious and uncouth, and disregard everything Agnes teaches them. It seems a hopeless cause. By this time the depressed young governess has given up any hope of ever being self-sufficient or of finding happiness. But a happy ending is in sight - a chance of being valued by someone dear to her. Can a woman not esteemed a beauty, nor endowed with wealth, still find her prince?


This is a story of woe that ends happily - this would mean little if not for the fact that all the Bronte sisters died so young, and struggled to find happy endings for themselves. The fact that in their imaginations dowdy governesses could find happiness is important. What they give us is the fact that young women growing up isolated and in intellectual abandon could still leave their mark, could still dream and could still change the world in their own subtle ways.

"The Life You Save May Be Your Own," is a dramatic short story written by Flannery O'Connor, which captures the element of trick plotting at the slightest bit. The reader is fooled toward the end of the story, when one of the three main characters, Tom T. Shiftlet, completely leaves his wife, Lucynell Crater, and drives off to a city called Tuscaloosa. He earned the trust of Crater's mother, also going by the name Lucynell Crater, for two things: to gather as much money from them as possible, and to drive off with something he never could afford to have: an automobile. It is an example of clear deception. In addition, the way O' Connor drops the subtle hints of deception throughout the story, is for the reader to find out toward the end, that Shiftlet is up to no good. However, the theme O' Connor makes is powerful. No matter how good a person thinks they are, sometimes, it is them who need the most help.


The story begins with the mother and her daughter (both Lucynell Craters) minding their own business and living their daily lives. Shiftlet is the outside stranger that approaches them. Almost immediately he begins asking questions about their possessions, creating an impression to the reader as if that was all he was interested in. Shiftlet also used a good strategy by conveying a superficial form of innocence, bringing up many of his philosophical beliefs. Because Crater, the mother, was philosophical herself in some ways, he was able to appeal to her.


During their first encounter, as Shiftlet was looking around the house and offering to fix anything that was not functioning properly, "mother Crater" quickly replied how she had no money to offer, just hospitality and care. This was an effort by mother Crater to see what type of man Shiftlet really was. Just on how Shiftlet appeared uninterested in the topic of money to mother Crater at first, this showed her that he might have been a sincere man and worth trusting.


Since Shiftlet, to some extent, earned mother Crater's trust, he was allowed to stay within the vicinity and fix anything he could. He wound up repairing important resources like the fences, a hog pen, the steps to the house, and so on. To even persuade mother Crater that he was a good man, Shiftlet taught a deaf "daughter Crater" how to say the word, "bird." This act, really won the affection of mother Crater. To invest such time into teaching a deaf girl to say a word, displays some integrity on the part of Shiftlet. As he and mother Crater were talking, he began the "money-taking" by suggesting a new fan belt and new bolts to make the car run efficiently. Even though this is true, what the audience does not yet realize is that this is all for him.

This part of The Wars focuses on the life of the military officers of World War One. It brought out the fact that people from different backgrounds were drawn together for a common cause. Looking back at history, we know that the military in WWI was made up of a few groups of people. In this part, there were mainly eight characters. In which, each of them differs from one another. The author uses these eight people to show the diversity of those within the war. Some do things by the book, several carry positive dreams for post-war life style, and others despite their situation keep a pet. Further, a number are scared and believe they were not meant to be in the war.


The first transcript (pp. 101 to 108) about Lady Juliet was really difficult for me. I had to reread and reread it. At first I did not understand why it was placed in the book. However, later I realized that she was one of the people whom remembers about Robert and is willing to talk about him. Due to the fact that she is deeply involved in the story of Robert, Findley probably used her as a bridge for readers to further understand Robert. Moreover, Lady Juliet also gives us the flavor of time. In other words, she is used as a tool to inform readers the point of view of the society at that time.


Up to this point in the book, Findley's writing disgusts me. That is, I disagree with is beliefs and morals. On pages 111 to 112, he indirectly expresses how when boys become very good friends, they can be "in love". On page 112, Findley uses Barbara to explore how women "went through a lot of men and didn't get back to….." This quote gives a reader the impression of how having more than one life-partner is tolerable. I oppose these two beliefs. I do not like how he always talks about homosexuality. In addition, I do not believe it is acceptable to have more than one partner in life.

In 1608 Puritan Separatists immigrated to Holland after being persecuted in England. However, after a number of years the Pilgrims felt that their children were being corrupted by the liberal Dutch lifestyle and were losing their English heritage. On September 160, the Puritans, known as 'pilgrims' before they left, departed with thirty five Puritan Separatists and sixty seven others aboard the Mayflower. The original destination of the Mayflower was at the mouth of the Hudson River, but on December 1,160, they established the settlement of Plymouth on Cape Cod. Plymouth was an area just north of the Cape, outside of the area of the Virginia Company. It provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. Cold climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and trade. The relations between the Pilgrims and the Indians were not bad, mostly because the native population was weakened by disease. The survival and growth of the colony ultimately depended on the natives' help from Squanto and Samoset. Squanto learned English and eased the tension between the two cultures. The Pilgrims had a poor community, but stayed because they were devoted to religion and they had faith. They did not care how they were viewed by other ambitious colonies to the north.
