The Wild-Goose Chase My Description and Opinions on Annie Dillards The Chase

Dillard's essay tells the story of an event in her childhood during winter when she was seven. Before describing this she gives us a brief history of herself as a child. She used to play both football and baseball with the boys during the summer. These boys were slightly older than Dillard and she seems to have prided herself on being as rough and tough as any of them. When it was too cold for football and baseball and there was enough snow on the ground, she would play snowball fights with the boys instead. Since she describes herself as having a "boy's arm" (7) for throwing baseballs, I imagine she was also formidable with a snowball in hand. In the event she describes in the essay she was with a group of boys waiting to throw their snowballs at passing cars. Then when one heralded its approach by the sound of snow chains clanking on the pavement, they readied themselves to pelt it with snow as normal. But, when they let loose, the driver pulled over and ran toward them. Soon the group of children split off and ran in different directions and Dillard was left being chased by this man with another boy ahead of her. Though she expected this driver to give up after scaring the children into fleeing he carried on running them down. He chased them over and around ten blocks before he caught them and at that point had to wait awhile to catch his breath before he could even start to speak. Then, with his suit covered in snow, he proceeded simply to tell them off. For a seven-year-old this was a huge anticlimax after the excitement of a chase all that happened was a routine dressing down.

I really like this essay. It's a very good description of the thoughts and feelings going through a child's mind. Which is an amazing feat considering the author wrote the essay many years after the fact. Though being chased by this man was frightening it obviously was also an exciting and exhilarating experience for her as well. She describes what happens as if it's a victory for her as a child, she got a kick out of being chased and all the man who chased her could do was scold a couple of little kids who aren't listening to him. Though at the same time she admired this man, a "sainted, skinny, furious redheaded man" that "would never give up" (100). She admired him for knowing "what I thought only children . . . knew" that you had to "fling yourself at what you're doing" () with the singlemindedness of a child. This year, the year 00 we have come together to celebrate one hundred years of African American success. We come to commemorate one hundred years of struggles and achievements. From the establishment of the NAACP to the fight for Civil Rights in the sixties, we have witnessed racial promotion become more common in the African American communities. Towards the early mark of the century it was common for African Americans to promote racial marginalism. It is now visible, one hundred years later, that we have stepped away from marginalism.

As we reflect upon the centennial achievements, we are obligated to think of such achievements as the NAACP, Civil Rights Movement, African Americans in music, drama, sports, and government. However, we tend to neglect African American journals. As we overlook African American Journals we do not see that African American journals, at the beginning of the Centennial Reflection, created African American readers. Such journals such as The Messenger, The Opportunity, The Crisis, and The North Star not only created African Americans writers but African American readers.

The last one hundred years comprise of several "African American Time Periods. " These "time periods" are From Reconstruction to the New Negro Renaissance. This age is from the Emancipation Proclamation to the time in which Alain Locke thought there was a "New Negro." This epoch includes such persons as Booker T. Washington, Charles Chesnut, W.E.B DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, and others. The ensuing period is the Harlem Renaissance, in which we are obliged to commemorate such names as Billie Holliday, Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington. But what we fail to see is that the Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of aptitude, or as W.E.B DuBois would say, "The Talented Ten." Which was referred to as "Ten percent of every generation has God given talent." The Talented Ten, was written by W.E.B DuBois book "Souls of Black Folks." The final period was Realism, Naturalism, and Modernism. This was between the period of 140 to 160. This included such anamnesis as the Civil Rights Movement and Voters Registration law being passed.

The Harlem Renaissance has become a time for remembrance, and recognition. This outstanding day in age is now known as a period for phenomenal literature, musical, and artistic vigor and creativity in the U.S. The Harlem Renaissance produced sophisticated explorations of black American life and culture that revealed and stimulated a new confidence and racial pride and promotion.

When you play a part or a role to disguise your true character it harms you in the end. Hamlet's antic disposition was a tragic error on his part because it let to his eventual demise. Hamlet displays the antic disposition in order to fool Claudius, although Claudius is the only character to not be fooled. When Hamlet denies Ophelia his love, she goes mad and takes her life. Hamlet becomes confused as to whether he is insane or not. For these reasons, Hamlet's decision to portray an antic disposition is a tragic error.

When Hamlet found out that Claudius killed his father Hamlet was furious, and got right to work on how to get his fathers revenge. Hamlet went to work by coming up with a plan to act mad so that it would hide the truth from Claudius, which was that Hamlet was going to kill Claudius. Hamlet has no such luck. Claudius does not believe Hamlet's attempt at pretending that he is mad. Was not like madness. There's something in his soul (III; I; 161). This means that Claudius does not believe that Hamlet is insane, but rather has some sort of plan being brewed. Claudius also has a plan that is to kill hamlet. This is ironic because in the end they end up Claudius is in the end murdered by Hamlet.

Hamlet must act mad if he wants Claudius to believe him, so Hamlet uses his confrontations with Ophelia to display it. Ophelia is manipulated by Hamlet for his own personal gain. Hamlet uses Ophelia to get the word that he is mad around the kingdom. This is sad because Ophelia is innocent and she ends up committing suicide in the end. One of the way's Hamlet fools Ophelia into believing that he is insane is by scaring her. (II; I;75). I have been so affrighted. Hamlet fools Ophelia into believing that he is mad by killing Polonius behind a curtain in the Gertrude's room. This incident drives Ophelia into becoming insane and leads to her taking her own life.

Hamlet spends much of his time pretending to be mad, that he starts to believe that he really is insane. Hamlet feels as if he is losing control when he sees his father's ghost in Gertrude's chambers. Every other time the ghost appeared, someone else saw it as well, only this time his mother did not see it. On him, on him! Look you, how pale he glares! (III; iv; 16) He believes that there is something inside of him that he no longer has control over. I in me something dangerous (V; 1; 5-40) Hamlet begins to believe he should be murdered for his offences, and that he deserves to suffer. My head should be struck off (V;ii;4). Approaching the end of the story, Hamlet can no longer determine whether he is mentally fit and he pays the ultimate price.

Following the tragedy of September 11, America has launched a 1st century war to eradicate the threat of international terrorism. Terrorism, long a problem for many nations of the world, was all but foreign to U.S soil. September 11th was the first major attack on mainland American soil since the War of 181. The barbarity of the crime, the toll on innocent lives, and our lack of preparedness for the threat has scared the country to unity, and has scared the rest of the free world into assisting President Bush in finding the evildoers, smoking them out of their caves, and bringing them to justice.

The United States has started in Afghanistan, targeting Osama bin Laden, his al Qaeda network, and the Taliban government that supported and sheltered him. Clearly, this was the appropriate start to the campaign, as bin Laden and his associates were directly responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But Afghanistan is not the appropriate place to finish. Terrorism is not a problem of one man, country, or government. It is a threat that stretches over the entire world and it must be dealt with as such. Terrorism will not end with the death of Osama bin Laden, nor the destruction of al Qaeda, nor the downfall of the Taliban.

Admittedly, the United States swift and decisive victory demonstrates our resolve and power to those sympathetic to bin Laden, his cause, and his methods. Perhaps Lebanon, Yemen, Somalia, the Sudan, and Libya will be scared straight and will cease their support for terrorists who wish to attack the U.S., Israel, or any other free nation. Nevertheless, there is one country and there is one man whom no Afghan adventure will ever deter from terrorism.

Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is the most dangerous man in the world. While distanced from Islamic extremists, he has not stopped developing biological, chemical and nuclear weapons. His connection to September 11th is unsure, but assuredly he would have done the same thing if he could have. Saddam has readily used weapons of mass destruction against his own people. He has no reason to love the United States or the Presidents Bush. Despite U.S. air strikes and no-fly zones, he has refused to allow the U.N. weapons inspectors into Iraq. Can we doubt his willingness to use such weapons against his neighbors or the U.S.?
