Annie Dillard's essay Living Like Weasels is a story of her encounter with a wild weasel at a place called Hollins Pond. The pond is a quiet place about twenty minutes from her house where she liked to go at sunset and sit on a tree trunk (Dillard 0). She says I startled a weasel who startled me, and we exchanged a long glance (Dillard 0). This glance then made her curious about what it was like to be a weasel. She wondered what goes on in the brain of a weasel and what does it think about. In that brief, seemingly meaningless, moment they exchanged, Dillard finds something very profound about herself and life and why we should all live like weasels.

Who wants to live like a weasel? Eeuhh! The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of a weasel is the typical stereotype dirty, shady, darting, conniving. Those aren't any qualities I would like to have or to live like. Well, in Dillard's research about weasels (after her encounter), she found the natural principle by which they live. She finds a story of a man who shot an eagle out of the sky and found a dry skull of a weasel attached by the jaws to its throat. And says Obedient to instinct, he bites his prey at the neck, either splitting the jugular vein at the throat or crunching the brain at the base of the skull, and he does not let go. (Dillard 0) Again, at first thought, this natural principle of the weasel is not something I would ever think of to apply to my life. But in a surprising way Dillard convinced me to reconsider my first thoughts of living like a weasel.

She says, What does a weasel think about? He won't say. His journal is tracks in clay, a spray of feathers, mouse blood and bone uncollected, unconnected, loose-leaf, and blown. (Dillard 11). They have a simple life, free do what they want, not really thinking about anything, a certain mindlessness, something of the purity of living in the physical senses and the dignity of living without bias or motive. The weasel lives in necessity and we live in choice, hating the necessity and dying at the last ignobly in its talons. I would like to live as I should, as the weasel lives as he should. And I suspect that for me the way is like weasel's open to time and death painlessly, noticing everything, remembering nothing, choosing the given with a fierce and pointed will. (Dillard 11) Now living like a weasel doesn't sound so bad, right? For me, actually, it sounds just right.

We, as humans, can learn a lot from the weasel. And we have a choice, as the author says, to live any way we want. Her advice is to stalk your calling in a certain skilled and supple way, to locate the most tender and live spot and plug into that pulse. This is yielding, not fighting. A weasel doesn't attack anything; a weasel lives as he's meant to, yielding at every moment to the perfect freedom of single necessity. (Dillard 11) She also says to grasp your one necessity and not let it go, to dangle from it limp wherever it takes you. Then even death, where you're going no matter how you live, cannot you part. Seize it and let it seize you up aloft even, till your eyes burn out and drop; let your musky flesh fall off in shreds, and let your very bones unhinge and scatter, loosened over the fields, over fields and woods, lightly, thoughtless, from any height at all, from as high as eagles. (Dillard 11)

Dillard takes her chance encounter with the weasel and paints a beautiful (yet not stereotypical), inspiring picture of how to follow our dreams. It says so much more than Live life to the fullest. The American Fantasy

The history of America is an amazing one, filled with action, energy, and growth. In the very short history of America, it has progressed from an undeveloped, isolated land to the economically dominant nation that it is today. All the economic growth and progress of this nation is mainly due to the ideal of the "real" American Dream that promotes and rewards hard work. But over a long period of time, the American Dream has become very distorted, and it is the driving force that gives some people unrealistic goals they are not capable of.

The American Dream has changed into an ideal of one's fantasy of an utopian life. But the very nature of this fantasy prevents the enjoyment of the success one has earned because the temptation is always nagging and insisting for more progress and more accomplishment. Some may think that this temptation for more is good but in actuality this only breeds greed for more and discontentment with your present position in life. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is the perfect example of the unrealistic "American fantasies." The novel begins by showing an intense obsession with the American Dream. The characters, especially Gatsby, are emphatically materialistic and strive towards very unrealistic goals and dreams.

It is clear that in the beginning that Nick seems to be inexperienced with the idea of the American Dream while Gatsby is an expert. Having been born to a poor household, Gatsby successfully escaped poverty. Without any extraordinary abilities, Gatsby was able to acquire millions of dollars and some fame in the matter of a few years. The financial success of Gatsby implies that he is well aware of the American Dream and that he has mastered his own ways to make easy money to accomplish this American Dream.

After five years, Gatsby is finally in the position to achieve his final American Dream. He has the money, the house, the social connections and everything was in place for him to finally realize his aspiration Daisy. And yet, when he finally gets the chance to reunite with Daisy, he did not find any great happiness, only disappointment. Gatsby was not satisfied yet. Gatsby tries to recreate the past and wants Daisy to divorce Tom. But Gatsby's discontent only lasts for a short while. He is murdered in revenge for an accident he never committed.

It is my American Dream to become a doctor and live a comfortable life. I don't want to strive to become a millionaire or live in a mansion of any sort but, I would like to live in an nice home. I also would like an expensive, beautiful car. But the most important thing is that these materialistic goals are not the basis of what I want to do or achieve. I think my American Dream is a "real" American Dream because it is not a fantasy. I can accomplish it if I work hard and try my best. It is also realistic since I think I am capable of doing it through hard work. Becoming a doctor requires a lot of time, hard work and patience, not to mention, the financial burden involved. But it is still what I want to do in life. Furthermore, I will be content once I accomplish my goal. I won't be greedy or discontent and strive for something in dishonest or unrealistic ways like Gatsby.

One's desire to live the fantasy created by his/her dreams is the very force that makes the achievement of his/her fantasy impossible. Gatsby based his entire existence on a dream and became obsessed with what he did not have instead of enjoying his accomplishments. The American Dream is not a means to an end, rather, it is a way of American life ,and it will always be one step out of reach.

The Great Gatsby!

The conclusion of animal farm in the animated film is fairly different to the novel of Animal Farm.

Firstly, in the film the story is more told by pictures and narration, to explain what was happening and animation to emphasise and easily understand what was happening. However in the Novel the story was told more by speeches made by the animals.

Secondly, in the film Snowballs death was much more explicit than in the novel, this is because more emphasis can be showed with animation rather than words. Therefore Snowballs death looked and was probably made more explicit because of the above reason.

Thirdly, in the novel the name was changed from Manor farm to Animal farm after Jones was overthrown, however it was then changed back to the original name which was Manor farm as Napoleon believed that Manor farm was its original and proper name, however in the film the name of the farm remained as Animal farm.

Fourthly, a minor detail which is the plans for the windmill was drawn on a piece of paper in the film, however in the Novel the plans for the windmill were drawn on the floor.

The film showed barbed wire and watchtowers surrounding the farm for protection, however the novel never mentioned this fact at all.

The film showed an outlook of outside the farm as well as just in the farm. As it showed Jones going to the Red Lion pub, meeting his fellow farmers to make plans to overthrow the animals, however the novel does not show a view of the world outside the farm.

In the film, the windmills story is condensed; once the windmill was built Jones strapped a bomb to himself and blew up the entire windmill after that the windmill was rebuilt, however in the novel after the windmill is built, it is blown down by a storm first and then after it is rebuilt Jones destroys it.

The novel gives much more detail of Old Majors speech where as in the film it is condensed.

In the film Benjamin is portrayed as a hard worker and a hero, however in the novel he is shown as cynical and embittered. Benjamin and Boxer are very good friends. In the film both Boxer and Benjamin were woken up early to work towards the windmill, however in the novel only Boxer was woken up early.

Also, as a minor change there are pictures of Napoleon all over the farm in the film, however in the novel there is no mention of this.

Finally, going towards the conclusion, in the film it ends by the animals overthrowing the Pigs, however in the novel it concludes by the pigs remaining in power. A minor change which made it easier for the animals to overthrow the pigs was the fact that the pigs in the film was that the dogs which Napoleon had for the protection of himself, were drunk due to wine at the end of the film, however in the novel there was no mention of this fact. In the end in the film Napoleon was meeting with other fellow pigs, however in the novel Napoleon was meeting with Mr. Pilkington (a human).

Those are most of the changes between the film and the novel. Following is which ending is more effective, the film or the novel.

As you can see the film had major changes compared to the novel. The two endings had different morals.

The Film ended by the animals overthrowing the pig, which has the moral

Good Triumph Over Evil

The novel ended by Benjamin just making a statement and no action was taken, so the pigs remained in power so there are two morals

The More Things Change

The More They Stay The Same

And

Power Corrupts

In my opinion the films ending is more effective, as it is more of a happy ending, and it shows that another revolution can occur if someone becomes too cocky or power mad. Which shows this is a never-ending story. That is why I think the films ending was more effective. Langston Hughes leans heavily on simile to illustrate his thoughts on mid 0th century Harlem that, while terse, evoke vivid mental pictures to warn the future. He details a less known side of people and everyday life in Harlem.

The reference to "Raisin in the sun" in the second line was 'borrowed' as the title of a renowned play about the hopelessness of the situation of black people in the mid-0th century. A raisin starts out as a grape, full of juice and potential and sweetness. Grapes are often tied to images of fruitfulness and the Christian Bible, which many black slaves were taught as the word of God, a grape being the fruit of the vine- the vine being the Church, or Christ.

A raisin is a grape separated from the vine and left out in the hot sun to dry. A raisin is dried out, and while it can be eaten, its juice is gone and it is shriveled remain of what it once was. This is a way of showing how neglect has caused the dream and the town of Harlem to shrivel and become old and almost useless. A grape also becomes darker and more concentrated in the process of becoming a raisin, and it becomes something "else". It is a static image and you feel the stillness of a non-moving raisin, a dried up thing.

"Does it fester like a sore?" This line slowly brings action into the poem, because although the sore is not going anyplace, there is a kind of infection within, a growing of ugly things like pus. What is growing is not a pleasant thing, but it is growing because of neglect.

Essay service for your Analization of Harlem by Langston Hughes paper

"And then run?" The movement is intensified slightly and by degrees as the festering and the growth of the corruption is oozing out of its sore and erupting out on the skin. These words indicate 'coming out'.

"Does it stink like rotten meat?" Hughes tantalizes us with gross images of rotting, deteriorating things. He shows that neglect does not have a lack of affect to match its lack of care. Something happens- the neglected thing rots, festers, and dries out.

"Or crust and sugar over like a syrupy sweet?" This might be the counterpoint simile, going from putrifying and dead things to something that is so sweet that it is also disgusting. The counterpoint argument also is meant to show the ridiculousness. We have been "conditioned" by the first horrible similes and so we see the sweetness of which he speaks as also a disgusting thing in this context.

In the final line of the poem, Hughes leaves the reader with the question, Or does it explode? This is a question [about] whether or not the dream still exists. I think that Hughes wants us to believe that the dream can live on and still flourish. Hughes lists several possible fates for the dream, but ends with the question. In the natural progression of the poem, this indicates to me that the dream is expanding, not exploding into nothingness. The final line of the poem offers a sentiment of encouragement to oppose the despair of the preceding phrases. Hughes suggests that as long as you dont forget about your true dreams, they will live on forever, no matter what hopelessness encompasses you. It is stated in the final line of Harlem, that a dream may explode. Most would see this as a negative event, meaning (that) your dreams would be shattered into bits and pieces, never to be restored. I feel, (however,) that this particular phrase is positive and encouraging (towards reaching your dream.) I see the word explode as referring to leaving an impact, just as a bomb leaves an impact on what it comes in contact with. Therefore, the memory of the dream is still there--its very visible. Please note that this sample paper on Analization of Harlem by Langston Hughes is for your review only. How I Can Change My Environmental Health

The most effective thing I can do for my environment is recycle. Anyone is capable of recycling. There are many recycling centers across the nation where people are able to take trash to be recycled. Some places might pay you a small amount for recycling trash.

Unbroken glass containers can be recycled. Clear are the most valuable and lids can go with metal. Tableware, ceramics, windows, light bulbs, and mirrors are different types of glass that can be recycled. Broken glass is hard to sort and that is why unbroken glass is preferred. The bad news is that some places only accept bottle glass and ceramics contaminate glass. Glass is color sorted for recycling.

Clean dry newspapers and newspaper inserts can be recycled as well as rubber bands, plastic bags, product samples. Make sure there is no water, dirt, mold or other contamination. Pack newspapers tightly in large brown grocery sacks or tie with natural twine and keep them dry.

Cheap college papers on Environment

Empty metal cans, caps, lids, bands and foil full cans, spray cans unless instructed, such as cans with paint or hazardous waste. Metals can be recycled again and again by the metal being melted down and reconstructed to its new form.

Plastic stamped with a #1 or # on the bottom can be recycled. The bad news is that some areas only accept clear plastic or certain shapes. Plastic types # through #7 are more recyclable plastics. Caps are usually a different type from the bottle. If it is unmarked then throw it away with regular trash because even a small amount of the wrong type of plastic can ruin a melt. Much plastic collected for recycling is actually land filled. Plastic bags marked # or #4 are usually from many grocery stores take bags. Usually recycling unmarked plastic bags or reuse bags can have a negative net impact.

Mixed paper such as junk mail, magazines, photocopies, computer printouts, cereal/shoe boxes, stickers, napkins, tissues, waxed paper, milk cartons, carbon paper, laminated paper (fast food wraps, some food bags, drink boxes, foil), neon paper, thermal fax paper can all be recycled. Some places also take cardboard and phone books. Paper fiber can be recycled about seven times before it gets too small. Plastic window envelopes are also recyclable. Do not recycle dirty or food stained paper

Scrap aluminum such as lawn chairs, window frames, pots, and metal parts attracted to magnets can be recycled. There is no need to remove labels or bands from cans or bottles but, clean them to prevent odors. Do not recycle containers with traces of hazardous materials. Motor oil should never be dumped into storm drains. Automotive batteries and sealed lead/gel-cell batteries can be taken to an automotive or security dealer for recycling or to trade in. Rechargeable batteries from cordless phone, camcorders, shavers, portable appliances, and computers can be recycled. Throw alkaline and heavy duty batteries in trash unless prohibited. Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable batteries contain toxins and should be recycled properly. Laser/Ink printer cartridges are recyclable. Household toxics (paints, oils, solvents, pesticides, cleaners) should be recycled. Computers, eyeglasses, household goods can be donated to charity or given to a repair shop because they are not recyclable.

Unless you buy recycled products, you are not recycling. I have as well as many others have used some product that I mentioned and I will begin my recycling today. We must all strive to share benefits and burdens resulting from the use of the environment. Furthermore, because in many cases environmental degradation is long-term and cumulative, precautionary policies guided by considerations of equity must be implemented to safeguard the rights of future generations.
