ESTABLISHING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

When we talk about the purposes of education we may be referring to purposes at one or more of the following levels nation, state, school district, school, and subject? Grade, unit plan, or lesson plan. Although there is no perfect agreement, most educators use the terms goals and objective to distinguish among levels of purpose with goals being broader and objectives being more specific. All end points however are influenced by social forces and by prevailing philosophies or theories of education. Social forces and philosophies combing to shape the goals adopted at the national or state level. Changes in society include shifts in emphasis amount the various influences such as the family, peer groups, social class and the economy.

Although goals are important guides in education, they cannot be directly observed or evaluated; rather, they are broad statements that denote a desired and valued competency, a theme or concern that applies to education in general. Sometimes the most general goals are called aims. Goals or aims are formulated at the national and state levels, often by prestigious commissions or task forces. Goals at the school district level begin to narrow in focus. For example, a school district goal related to the national goal of school readiness might be that "all children will have access to highquality and developmentally appropriate preschool programs that help prepare children for school." Goals at the school level usually narrow in focus even more, translating national, state, and district goals in to statement that coincide more closely either the philosophy and priorities of the local school community. By describing what schooling is intended to accomplish, goals provide a direction, but they are too vague for teachers and students to apply directly in the classroom. Thus for classroom use, goals must be translated into more specific objectives.

Objectives are generally written at three levels of instruction subject/grade level, unit plan level, and lesson plan level. In practice, most educators at the classroom level organize instruction with a combination of general and specific objectives in mind. General objectives are characterized by "end" terms such as to know, learn, understand, comprehend, and appreciate. At the level of the individual lesson plan, objectives usually become very specific.

Legalize It

It is my belief that the policy of the United States in regards to marijuana and other illicit street drugs is flawed and that marijuana should be legalized for not only medical use, but for recreational use as well. In this paper I will look at the prohibition of marijuana in America, compare its positive and negative effects, and in doing so bring to light the inherent failures of Americas drug policies. I will then examine the pros and cons of marijuana legalization and its effects on society and America as a whole.

To understand why marijuana is illegal in the first place we must look back at how marijuana was viewed in the early part of last century when the practice of smoking it first became widespread in the 10s. This was during the great social experiment of alcohol prohibition. Marijuana use was highest among people who also used opiates, primarily recent immigrants. In the 10s, the common belief that immigrants were inhumane and violent included a strong belief that marijuana was part of the cause (Wikman 15). Since marijuana was associated with opiates and those who use them, marijuana was quickly defined as a narcotic (Musto 11). By 17 all states had passed anti-marijuana legislation, the same year the federal government created the Marijuana Tax Act (NCMDA 17). Marijuana was outlawed in 17 as a repressive measure against Mexican workers who crossed the border seeking jobs during the Depression. The specific reason given for the outlawing of the hemp plant was its supposed violent effect on the degenerate races, this is actual testimony of Bureau of Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. Anslinger, in testimony before Congress in hearings on the Marijuana Tax Act of 17 (Whitebread 15). During this time no research was conducted on marijuana and its effects, nevertheless it was almost universally assumed that marijuana was a narcotic, caused psychological dependence, provoked violent crime, and led to insanity (Wikman 15).

6 years later it is still illegal to possess marijuana in the United States by order of the federal government. If the purpose of prohibition is to eliminate the use of a substance, then marijuana is certainly another example of how prohibition fails (Wikman 15). In 17, 68.% of all 18-5 year olds had tried marijuana at least once, and 5% said that they were regular users (U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 11). Today after 6 years of prohibition the numbers have fallen to 50% and 1%.

The study of the human brain has been researched for thousands of years. As technology

progressed it seemed only natural to try and replicate the thought process. A Neurophysiologist, Warren McCulloch, and a mathematician, Walter Pitts researched how neurons work in 14. They modeled a basic neuron by electrical circuits. This was considered the first step toward the simulation of the neural network. By definition, neural networks are relatively crude electronic models based on the neural structure of the brain. The questions that are being developed and answered are 1. How does the neurons/neural network work? . How are they being used? And more importantly, how efficient is the neural network?

Theories concerning replicating the human brain formalized again in the 150's, when computers started becoming advanced. An engineer, Nathaniel Rochester from IBM research laboratories began the first effort to simulate a true neural network. Of course, with most first attempts, they fail. And that was the case with Rochester. But, as he continued in his research they became successful. In 15, Bernard Widrow and Marcian Hoff developed models called ADALINE and MADALINE. The names are acronyms for their use of Mulitple Adaptive LINear Elements. It's an adaptive filter that removes the echoes from phone lines. MADALINE was considered the first neural network to actually be the solution for a true problem. The neural network is still currently being used in some commercial businesses. Through the years, the success turned to fear and drew many concerns of the accountability of the machines thinking and resolving problems. Due to the excessive hype of uncertainty, much of the funding came to a halt.

In 18, John Hopfield proposed to create valuable devices, by using neural networks. Since then several engineers and scientists have come from around the world to Neural Network conferences to discuss ideas, and engaged in targeting specific uses for the network. As progression took place engineers realized that the key to the neural networks lies in hardware development. Scientists came to the conclusion that in order to fully develop the networks the prototypes had to be removed from the labs for testing. Which required specialized chips. Companies began working on three types of neuro chips- digital, analog, and optical. Currently, the optical chip seems to be the most promising for the future.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Insulin is a protein hormone secreted from the Beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is produced when there is a high level of sugar in the blood, insulin acts on cells in the body to help reduce blood sugar levels. Diabetics, who suffer from lack of insulin production, must rely on technology to produce insulin. Using Recombinant DNA Technology is one way artificial insulin can be produced. The processes for isolating and producing large amounts of insulin require specific enzymes, other bacteria and of course sophisticated technology. In this project, we 'll be discussing terms such as Restriction Enzymes they are specific proteins that speed up chemical reactions. Providing the right conditions they 'cut' DNA strands at specific locations, usually between the Guanine (G) and Adenine (A) bases. Restriction enzymes recognise specific sequences of DNA, and cut at these points. Similarly, another enzyme, called DNA Ligase, will also be discussed. The enzyme Ligase joins pieces of double stranded DNA at their sugar-phosphate backbones. The bonds that form here are strong (covalent) bonds. When isolating and cloning the gene - ligase, restriction enzymes and a vector, such as a plasmid found in bacteria, are used. A Vector (plasmid), is a small circular piece of DNA found in bacteria. Because bacteria multiply in large amounts by binary fission, they're used to manufacture and clone large amounts of insulin in a short amount of time, as the vector will have the insulin gene inserted. Thus cloning the insulin gene also. JOINING DNA FRAGMENTS

In gene manipulation, the joining of pieces of DNA with sticky ends to make one circular piece is sometimes required. The enzyme LIGASE (pic 71) joins pieces of double stranded DNA at their sugar-phosphate backbones. The bonds that form are strong (covalent) bonds.

TRANSPORTING DNA INTO CELL

School papers on Biology: Insulin.

Special carriers or vectors can transport DNA fragments into cells, such as bacteria. One example of a vector is a small circular DNA molecule, called a plasmid, found in bacteria. Under certain conditions plasmids can cross cell membranes and enter a cell. When it moves from outside to inside, it carries any passenger DNA which has been joined to it.Please note that this sample paper on Biology: Insulin. is for your review only. The declaration of independence has been the symbol of American peoples desire to implement democracy in its true form. When Thomas Jefferson wrote all men are created equal, he introduced the ideology of equal opportunity for everybody in pursuit of their individual goal. This country was founded on the principle of equality among the people. The practice of this ideology is what set the American government apart from other governments at the time. However the definition of all men is not as clear as it seems. There have been a lot of discussions about Jeffersons intention when he wrote this famous statement. When examining the conditions that were present at the time, we can say that Jeffersons vision of equality was not inclusive of everyone.

In 1776, slavery was a common practice in United States. The economy was largely dependent on the institution of slavery. The slaves were dark skinned people who were brought from Africa. The difference in the way the look and the color of their skin made them to be outcast. They were given the lowest position in the society. The slaves performed most of the labor work that was considered inappropriate for any white person. The general public held an opinion about blacks to be from an inferior race. There were many people who thought of blacks not to be human beings.

Thomas Jefferson was born into a rich family who had the privilege to own slaves. When he became adult, he inherited his family estate and became a slave owner. In fact, the prosperity of his estate was very much dependent on the slaves he owned. He spent his whole life in the midst of slaves over the course of his lifetime. Surely he was well aware of the sub-human treatment that the slaves were subjected to. It is fair to say that Jefferson was not as much concerned about the inequality that existed between blacks and whites as he was about his economic situation.

During Jeffersons time of public service, he was known to be against slavery. He believed that the institution of slavery violated the core principle of the American Revolution. When he drafted the Declaration of Independence, he inserted a paragraph that calls for the people to abolish slavery, which was taken out by other member of the congress before it was signed. However, his view of anti slavery did not mean he regarded the blacks as equal. In fact, in one of his writings, he sated that blacks are biologically inferior to whites, and he went on to say that if slaves were to become free, they should be separated from whites in order to avoid racial mixing.
