The Grapes of Wrath is not only a story of a family that is moving to California and in the process go through many trials and tribulations. This novel represents social injustice in many ways. Social injustice is when people are discriminated against for reasons that are unjust. It reminds me of when people say, "life's not fair", once someone is bias towards anything ranging from a group of people to a few individuals, or an organization, and they treat them in an unpleasant way, it's socially unjust. This is because people aren't getting the same rights as other people are. An example of this would be when black people were thought of as nothing more than trash, and sold as slaves. This isn't fair because they are the same as every other human, but because of their race they weren't accepted.

This novel depicts different types of social injustice. There was one example of this that stuck out in my mind in a huge way. Jim Casey was trying to organize the workers of the strike and the policemen didn't like it and decided to stop him that they would kill him. Going that far to stop someone from doing something so harmless is totally wrong, and extremely unfair. It was also horrible that the police wanted to burn down Hooverville just because they wanted to get rid of the okies. It 's strange that the police who are suppose to protect, and lend a hand to others, were the ones that were going to actually set fire to a town. The police department doesn't have to like the okies, but they shouldn't even think of doing something to put people's lives in danger to drive them out of town.

Today we still have many social injustices. I think that people who are gay or lesbian are sometimes not treated the way they should be. Lots of times people who aren't heterosexual are beaten or are verbally abused by people who don't understand them or don't approve of their lifestyle. This is being prejudice to people who haven't done anything to anyone, therefore shouldn't be torn apart just because of their sexual preference. There are hate group that are open about their hatred to these people. It had actually ruined the lives of some select gays or lesbians that have been tortured from un-accepting individuals. Sadly some have even died from severe beating, or suicide. This is an example of unreasonable treatment towards people that have done nothing wrong.

According to the Webster's English dictionary personas are "individual's social facades" and the root of the word person comes from the Latin word persona, which in their language means mask. Masks have been around for thousands of years. They come in many shapes and sizes, the most well known masks are physical masks. As described in "why do people make masks?" (Sparkers), they have many uses, such as protection or preservation of memories. Masks allow the wearer to mask their true identity. Most of the time these masks are virtual, although often present they can not always be detected. No matter what shape they may take, they always have the same purposes, and when referring to virtual masks, it's often to hide the wearer's true self and bend reality to his or her biddings.

Knowing that almost everyone has hid behind a mask at one point or another, a question that can be raised is to what extent is reality tainted by the presence of masks in literature and society. The presence of various facades, such as the masks of Pride, Courage, and Hypocrisy, often taint reality due to the superficial environment they influence the characters to live in. We can witness this in different literary sources such as Shadow Play A novel by Charles Baxter as well as in society today.

The first mask that tends to taint the reality the characters live in is the mask of Pride. In Shadow Play, we see this mask worn by various characters. We also see characters like Willy in Arthur Miller's play as well as other characters in various books wear this mask. Wyatt, in Baxter's novel is the first character showing evidence of this mask. This facade is transparent when Wyatt gets a tattoo in order to conceal the pain caused by his cousins death. His embarrassment to show his true feelings demonstrates the mask of pride. He is not the only one, however, that uses pain in order to sustain his pride. One can see the same phenomenon in novels such as Find me by Rosie O'Donnell or The Luckiest Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron. Characters in both of these novels seek pain in order to not have to deal with their emotions due to the persona of pride they have been raised to wear. Showing their feelings would show a weakness to their facade which is why they seek to conceal it with superficial pain.

Never can Escape Work

On August 14th, on the day of the biggest blackout recorded in the United States, I was working. I work at Chianti IL Restaurant, in Saratoga Springs. It is one of the major restaurants in Saratoga.

I was working in the back of the restaurant, and suddenly the lights turned off, and than a minute later the lights turned on again. I thought to my self that it was just a malfunction, but than it happened again, and continued to do it about 5 more times. At this time our security alarm was going off, our cooks were mad because they could not prep there food because nothing worked, and everyone was wondering what was going on.

Than suddenly the power turned back on, but only at half power, than 10 minutes later we were back to full power, this occurrence all happened an hour before the restaurant opened, so there were no customers in the restaurant at this time. Everyone in my work just thought it was a local power outage, nothing significant. One waiter thought a car hit an electric pole, while other people thought squirrels bit through an electrical line.

So I went on with my work duties, and when I went outside to go get something from my car, I saw that all the traffic lights were not working, and everyone in there cars were frustrated and angry because the traffic was not progressing smoothly. I went next door to Stewarts to buy a drink, and there power was off, and they were giving out free ice cream because there freezers weren't working. I than went across the street to Dunkin Donuts to get a bagel, and there power was off also. My work than called there other restaurant to see if they had power, and they did not.

We were the only restaurant in town with power. All of the employees were angry because they wanted to get sent home. The cooks turned on the radio while they were prepping food, and that is when all of us found out what was happening. The radio announcer told us that there was a power outage from Canada, to Detroit, all the way down pass New York City. August 14th was the busiest day my work ever had, we had a hour wait, people were waiting, inside, outside, and all around the building. The book A Thousand Acres, by Jane Smiley, is characterized by Ginny's growing conflict with her father, Larry. Their conflict comes from the characters' needs for control. Ginny realizes that she has had no control over her life and Larry loses control of his life and tries to get it back.

In Larry's ambition to buy all of the land adjacent to his farm he also acquirers a yearning to have complete ownership over everything on the farm. This, of course, includes Ginny and Rose. Larry shows his ownership of Ginny not only by committing incest, but also by controlling her life. She never leaves the farm or goes to college, and she marries a man because he is a good farmer and gets along with Larry. Ginny does not discover that this is the life her father wants and not the life she wants for herself until she has lived this life for many years.

Ginny may not have known consciously that this was not the life she wanted, but she certainly was not satisfied with it. She is not as excited about farm life as her father, Ty, or Pete. When it is her chance to own the farm and experiment with new ideas, like the hogs, she is more worried than excited. Ginny does not enjoy being a farm wife but she was raised knowing that she would one day have a life just like her mothers, always serving others and never herself. She lives to make her family happy and they rarely show appreciation. Larry sees Ginny's attentiveness as a threat to his independence. It takes the chaos of the farm switching hands and an affair with Jess, who has enough distance from the farm to see what is really happening, for her to realize how much she resents that being used by her family.

Ginny is not the only character whose offering is unappreciated. Larry's children cannot understand why he would give up the one thing he lives for, the farm. Larry owns one thousand acres, a large amount of farmland for one family. The work of his life has been to build an empire - complete, efficient, debt-free - and pass it on for his offspring to treasure and maintain. The farm could have continued to provide for his family for many generations. However, as soon as Larry passes the farm on to his daughters and sons-in-law they gamble it on new ideas and techniques with which Larry is not comfortable. What the younger generation sees as a way to take huge steps forward in the farming business, Larry sees as folly and waste.

The waves leaped onto shore, crashing and frothing and foaming. I stood watching absentmindedly while the wild wind blew my skirt up above my knees. I blushed and tried to smooth it down while glancing around to see if anyone had noticed. I knew what I had worn had seemed appropriate at the time, but I also knew that it could get me into trouble out here. Katie and Emily supported my choice; a light, flowing flowery skirt under a tight black tank top exposing my stomach. It had seemed a good choice. My mind raced, we were at Julian's bar overlooking the windward coast. I had been here once before on a class trip up island but we had not stayed long and we had not been allowed to drink anything. Maybe that would change now that Katie's mother brought us, she seemed very chill. I smiled, my heart racing. How long had it been since I had had a drink? Or a cigarette for that matter? Too long…I felt sure Julian would give me a cigarette and a drink or two. Julian stood inside behind the bar, smiling with those pearly white teeth of his, laughing loudly and joking with a few other Bahamians. Yes, Julian would give me a cigarette or a drink or two. Julian was my friend. He had come down-island to the Island School to teach me and my classmates how to dance. We needed to learn because the Bahamian festival of Junkanoo proved to be fast approaching. We were to partake in the festivities by making our own costumes and hats, dancing and singing the traditional songs. I did not like dancing as much as I liked drumming and when I saw Julian and his cousin Vernon playing two animal skin drums I forced myself to walk over and begin to play with them. I did not know Julian or Vernon at that time, but I was very aware of how the Bahamian men viewed any girl with white skin and blonde hair. I sucked it up, knowing that nothing could happen to me on campus. They both seemed surprised at my ability to keep a beat and shortly thereafter announced that I would be the first female to ever play drums in the Junkanoo festival. My heart had almost burst from my chest with pride. Yeah, Julian and I got along real well. I sat down to keep my playful skirt from exposing me further in front of the natives. Katie and Emily came over to join me and we began to talk.

"Yo you guys, do you think Julian would give me a cigarette?"

"…I don't see why not," Katie replied, "He gave me a long island iced tea." She nonchalantly held up the glass for me to see.

"Rock on dude! So I guess your mother doesn't mind if we drink?"
