Cigarette smoking is the most significant cause of lung cancer and also the leading cause of death in both men and women. Cigarette smoking is accountable for at least one-third of deaths of cancer annually in the United States. Cigarette smoking is an addiction that can be prevented. However, once a person inhales a cigarette it becomes an addiction that can cause lung cancer, heart disease, and other health effects which I think people should be aware of.

Smoking involves inhaling and absorbing nicotine into the bloodstream and traveling it to the brain which causes an addictive effect. Every time the smoker's serum nicotine level falls below the minimum limit, he/she experiences drug withdrawal which makes him/her to become tense, anxious, and irritable. This feeling of dependency on nicotine makes the smoker to continue to smoke, therefore those who continue to smoke will continue to be in a constant battle of maintaining their serum nicotine level. Nevertheless it is best to never start smoking because once a puff is inhaled, you will become addicted to nicotine and continue to crave for it.

People commonly start smoking when they were a teenager. Some teenagers smoke because they want to be rebellious, however, the most common reason is peer pressure. Teenagers start smoking because they think it will give them a better image like being cooler, more attractive, or more popular. However, some people say they smoke because they are unhappy, unsatisfied, nervous, bored, anxious, lonely, tired or just

puff is inhaled, the nicotine is absorbed into the body causing an addictive effect. I believe that people should start thinking of the effects that nicotine can do to their lives. I truly do not think that smoking is worth risking a person's life. I know that there are serious consequences of smoking, which is why I am not a smoker. I have thought about taking a puff to see why people like to smoke but I always thought about the risks which is why I never even tried it at all. I know that nicotine is an addictive chemical that can cause cancer and other serious damage to the body. I experienced and saw what nicotine can do. My uncle had past away a couple of months ago from lung cancer which was caused by his dependency on smoking. I would think about the consequences before I act upon doing something and there are many serious consequences of smoking. Once you inhale a cigarette, it becomes an addiction and in the long run will cause damage to the health. So, think before you act and know the consequences that it can do to you and the ones that you love.

Word Count: 905 The American Oligarchy America: The Pretense of Democracy The Aristotelian view of democracy showed democracy as a supreme state of being, promoting equality more than anything. It allowed every person to have as much say in a government as any other person, and yet still allowed individuality to reign. To follow this path of "true" democracy is to follow the path to a perfect country. Yet America, which prides itself on being a truly democratic nation, is filled with corruption and extortion, nothing like the Utopia Aristotle portrayed. America is in the hands of a select few. A tiny fraction of the population holds any real political power, while the rest simply sit idly by. This goes against the very principle of democracy. Aristotle said of this Any one man [of the many] may be inferior [to a man of excellence], but the city-state is made up of many men. Just as a meal done by many is better than a single and simple one, for this reason a mass (ochlos) can judge many things better than any one man. In addition, that which is many is less likely to be corrupted. So, although an individual's judgment can be corrupted when he is overcome by anger or some other emotion, it is difficult for all to become angry and make erroneous judgments simultaneously. If all the men are good men and good citizens, they are less corruptible than one man. However, seldom is this the case with American politics. There are far fewer politicians then there are low class workers or unemployed, and yet these politicians decide upon most all of the important decisions the country is faced with. The only time the rest of the people are involved is when these politicians spew out money and promises in an attempt to gain the popularity of the public whom they are so far from. Although the majority of the United States is low to middle class, the only people in high political positions are those who spend millions of dollars to get where they are. Equality is one of the largest foundations of democracy, and yet those who are not fabulously wealthy or who have not spent all their life attempting to establish themselves as a politician have no chance of becoming a successful one. According to Aristotle, "Justice as understood in democracy is equality, but this considers only part of what is just; the same is true of the notion of justice in oligarchy." The American system of democracy is anything but equal. The original Bill of Rights was very clear about having one person represent many. The very first article stated After the first enumeration required by the first article of the Constitution, there shall be one Representative for every thirty thousand, until the number shall amount to one hundred… …there shall be not less than one hundred Representatives nor less than one Representative for every forty thousand persons, until the number of Representatives shall amount to two hundred… …there shall not be less than two hundred Representatives, nor more than one Representative for every fifty thousand persons. To have one person speak for numbers exceeding thirty thousand is certainly not democratic in its original sense. It is not possible for one man to properly ensure that the differing rights of thirty thousand people are upheld. This article was not ratified, but it was proposed to be Article I of the Bill of Rights. Although America claims to have been founded on the principles of democracy, its very foundations proposed something so very undemocratic that this claim becomes preposterous. The definition of democracy is "ruled by many". Many, however, do not rule America. There is another term for this. It is oligarchy, which means, "ruled by few". America is quite definitely an oligarchy, and it shows many qualities as such. Aristotle referred to Sparta as an oligarchy because its political system was to have two offices elected by the people, as opposed to having everything run by the people. He says The Spartan common messes were intended to be a democratic institution, but they did not work out that way. Everyone is required to contribute [to the shared meals], but some of them are too poor to do so. The very poorest cannot easily share in the common messes, yet this is the ancestral defining principal of their system of government. Thus the very poor do not have a share in it. This is the perfect picture of America. The poor cannot contribute, and therefore are left out, pushed aside by the rich, who can rule. This nation is not the democracy Aristotle speaks, but rather an oligarchy very similar to Sparta. Aristotle's democracy was a democracy that endorsed equality to its fullest. Instead of forcing the thoughts of everyone through one biased individual, it allowed every person to have a voice. America is not a democracy. It tries very hard to make the people of the world think it is, but it is not. It goes against much of what Aristotle spoke of with fervor. Not everyone has an equal opportunity, nor does everyone have a voice. In fact, equality continues to diminish despite steps taken to push it further. Most of America is a simple façade that can be stripped away with minor effort. It is a mere pretense of democracy that would die out if it were to attempt to become anything more. Please note that this sample paper on American Oligarchy is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Programming procedures allow programming practices to become standardized. This enables a programmer to quickly come up to speed when troubleshooting and making modifications to an existing application. Programming guidelines should contain scheduling requirements, a quality checklist, and some general design guidelines. The components included in a programming procedure not only enable a programming team to build a more robust application but also save costly maintenance time when the application crashes or has enhancements that need to be incorporated.

. Code Standards

Code standards are a critical part of programming, especially when a program is being developed by a team. A variable naming conventions allows variables to be named in a format that is consistent and definitive. The Hungarian variable naming convention consists of small lower-case prefixes added on to a variable name with the first letter of words capitalized.

A naming convention must also be adhered to for controls. By using Hungarian Notation to name controls, a programmer has the ability to standardize the structure, coding style and logic of an application. Below is a sample of the Hungarian Notion used for naming controls.

Cheap writing services for Programming procedures papers

Indentation guidelines are another important part of code standards. A programmer should use blank lines and Tabs for formatting to enhance readability. Correct indentation for all control structures should be adhered to.

Internal Documentation Requirements are yet another component of code standards. Pseudo code and a testing checklist should be submitted with any application. This will help other programmer quickly come up to speed and will ensure that the testing phase of application development is thorough and successful.

. Scheduling Requirements

In order to make our group deadline, each individual must be able to post their parts to the newsgroup two days before the actual deadline. Reason being is so each team members can review the product and revise anything that needs revising. A chosen person can merge all the documents together to make it one seamless product. Each individual who turns in their part must be well documented and must have their resources documented as well. If a team member needs help, then s/he should not be afraid to ask for help. The one thing that each member needs to remember is to turn in their work on time. You can't expect your team member to pick up your own part. If you can't do it, let your team member know and ask for help.

4. QC Checklist

Having others QC the application can provide a number of quality checks. While it may not seem too important to the programmer to do this in a classroom environment, making a program that a total stranger has to read and understand is critical in the real world. First, when choosing a name for a subroutine or function be descriptive. A person ought to be able to tell by the name what type of processing will take place. A second area of concern is variable naming. Do the variable names reflect the data types they are? For example, is int prefixing all integer variables. We will also evaluate the names of variables using the Microsoft naming standards and ease of use of the application. Finally, the program will be checked for inline documentation of each routine or function. What is being called? Who calls it? Who does it call? Is there anything passed to it that should have a certain range of values? By adhering to some simple rules, it will make the project easier to understand and comment on it.

5. Design Guidelines/Requirements

One of the many documentation that will be required are ANY sources that was used for the design. Other design documentation that will be required is the original design for the final project. Documentation is essential so that when a person wants to rebuild this product, a person can just take a look at the original design and build it from scratch. Another thing you want to document is any revision that was made after the original product was designed. A design is essential because it organizes the thoughts of the group and from there a flow chart could be made. It is easier to create a product from something that is already organized. Meaning that everything that you want a product to do is laid out for a team to work on and create this product. It makes coding so much easier.

6. Conclusion

The quality control process is an important one in programming. It provides a guideline to create a standardized set of code for applications and programs. This enables others to view and understand what the program is trying to accomplish in the end. Having the Learning Team go through the quality control process will take it to a new appreciation for programming and group projects. It will get the whole group involved in lending a hand to make each weekly project and enjoyable learning experience. All of this will keep the team moving towards its goal of gaining a better understanding of what it takes to create a quality program. Please note that this sample paper on Programming procedures is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Faulkner's use of characterization plays an extremely important role in his short story, "A Rose for Emily". It is clear to the readers that Miss Emily Grierson is the protagonist or the principle character. Emily is a gothic character. That is because of the fact that she slept with a skeleton of her lover Homer Barron for forty years. She was awfully stubborn in the opinion of the townspeople. This stubbornness also ties into Emily's ability to live in reality. After she refused to pay her taxes, directly to the mayor, she tells them to go see Colonel Satoris , who has been dead for ten years. This portrays Emilys illusion of reality was greatly distorted. Miss Emily was motivated by her lover, Homer, she isolated herself in an old decaying house and she refused to recognize that time had passed. Emily was proud, disdainful and seemingly independent. This shows the importance of characterization. Without these characters, the story would be radically changed. When the reader understands Emily, they can achieve a clearer view of the actions that go on during the story. Several other characters in "A Rose for Emily" are set in opposition to exemplify the reader's feelings about certain characters and the tribulations they experience.

Another prime example of Faulkner's effective writing is his use of narration. Of course, in most stories the narrator not only as a story teller, but as an observer from the crowd as well. The narrator's point of view, which is in third person, has a positive effect on the way a reader views the story. Through the story the narrator uses "we" instead of I revealing to us the way the townspeople judge Emily. The narrator thinks back in time throughout the story remembering particular events that occurred in the past. This is important to the reader in that it helps aid in the understanding of how the townspeople viewed Emily. The narrator as one of the townspeople had been narrated by anyone else; it may not have been easy for the reader to completely understand. With this spectacular as the narrator, describing the events of the story through his eyes, one can detect a general impression of Emily. The view of the narrator is beneficial in understanding the things that Emily goes through. Also toward the end of the story the narrator gives the reader a feeling of sorrow and pity for Emily. It is apparent Faulkner's use of narration is critical to the enhancement and clarification of "The Rose for Emily". After analyzing the narrator it was made clear that one of the townspeople was the narrator. The narrator could not have been better than someone from the town who had a birds eye view of Miss Emily's life.

Another example of Faulkner's unpredicted style is his use of foreshadowing. By using this technique, Faulkner forces the reader to notice or feel the intensity of the feelings and sights given off by the story. An artistic nature is vividly exhibited by the use of foreshadowing. A prime example of Faulkner's artistic ability is the character Homer Barron, who is Miss Emily's lover. Homer is causally mentioned at first and seems to have little or no significance to the story's direct meaning. However after looking back over the story, the reader can see that Homer did display a important role in the theme of the story. The theme of Emily being unhappy and basically leading a sheltered life foreshadows that Faulkner bring across that it was wrong for the townspeople to gossip and assume things about Emily. By using Homer as the antagonist, one can see that because he had disagreed with Emily and was going to let Emily down as her father. Her unhappiness had driven him to commit murder. Faulkner also used the mood as a foreshadowing tool. "A Rose for Emily" may seem dependant on its climax of shock, however, is largely justified by the theme of the story-given this theme, there can be no way of realizing it, except through shock. The type of foreshadowing that Faulkner represents the past and present generations and how they are progressed in the story, Miss Emily still represented and for the beliefs of the Old South while the New South generation stood back and allowed her to bask in her illusions.

One final example of Faulkner's intellectual writing is his ability to incorporate symbolism into his writing. In "A Rose for Emily" Miss Emily actually symbolized a remembrance of values and sins of the persevere relic of the South's antebellum past. Miss Emily was definitely a complex character in that her character stood for the beliefs that she believed from the Old South. In the title, "A Rose for Emily" many have ask "What does the Rose stand for?" I feel as though "the rose" is a symbol of the age of romance in which the aristocracy was obsessed with delusions of grandeur, pure women being a symbol of the ideal in every phase of life. In other words, the story is in a way, a rose to Miss Emily standing up for the things she believed and died believing them. Other characters also symbolized other things in the story. Colonel Satori, the old negro servant, and the older generation of the Board of Alderman symbolized the Old South. The unnamed narrator, the new generation of the Board of Alderman, and the attitude of Homer Barron toward the Grieson's and the Old South symbolized the feelings of the New South. Most people will agree that Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" has an effect on those who read it.

Abstract

This case study takes place in a community hospital on a rainy Monday morning. The new executive assistant to the CEO, Chris Smith, has just started his job and is getting a brief synopsis of issues and problems that he has been asked to analyze and propose solutions to. After gathering all the information possible, looking at discrepancies, and talking with employees of the hospital, Chris determines that the problem is the general nature of the mission statement, and the desire of all stakeholders to keep the hospital solvent in their own way. The proposals needed to solve any problems must be ready in one week.

Case Study Faith Community Hospital

Chris Smith, as the executive assistant to the CEO at Faith Community Hospital, is given the charge to come up with a report for the first ever held staff meeting that will propose solutions to the negative publicity and the hospital funds that, according to the hospital accounting department, are going in the red. Chris found that the best way to solve problems is to identify them specifically. He went on a fact finding information search, checked out discrepancies, and also had conversations with the staff at the hospital. The main problem he discovered was the nature of the mission statement and a lack in staff training. His proposal included a re-write of the mission statement, new guidelines for all staff and specific, regular, training to inform all involved of the changes.

Essay help on Problem Identification

Our reading and classroom discussions have taught that getting all of the information possible is critical to identifying a problem. The CEO gave Chris some general ideas about what kinds of issues where coming up at the hospital, but nothing specific. When the information is all put together, mapped out so that it is all in front of you, the picture becomes a little clearer. Asking questions also helped Chris in determining the problem. Why is the most often asked question. "Why did the DNR directive get administered differently?". "Why do doctors treat some patients and not others just because of insurance issues?".

Another action that Chris took was to do some comparing. In the past the costs were less per patient, but was the quality going down, or were there other reasons for the increase? Chris had to look at the information the accounting department gave them regarding fixed costs and compare them to the per patient number. He also used plans and forecasts to decide what the current trend would do to the hospital, which our classroom text explains is helpful in pinpointing a problem and finding solutions.

The problem that Chris identified was the broad, general nature of the mission statement, multiple interpretations of it, and a lack of training for the entire staff at the hospital. The mission statement is a general, warm-fuzzy, religious statement and is being interpreted in many ways. The hospital is still a business and must still operate as such. The problem with the mission statement is because it so broad and open, there are many different interpretations of it. The second problem that Chris identified is the lack of training for staff members. The CEO admitted that the meeting where he would present his proposals would be the first of its kind during his administration. None of the staff seemed to be on the same page because they never had communication and training that helped them understand what the mission statement and their specific responsibilities entailed.

To solve the problem of the mission statement, Chris proposed re-writing the missions statement so that the focus is on the health and well being of the people in the community and the service and commitment to excellence in the medical industry. This task would require the assistance of the Board of Directors, or a representative of that board to participate in some brainstorming sessions so that the statement would still reflect the values of the community and the founders of the hospital.

To solve the problem of many interpretations of the mission statement, Chris proposed regular staff meetings and training sessions. The problem of individual interpretation comes from a lack of information. The specific meaning of the mission statement and every procedure in the hospital should be disseminated to every member of the staff - doctors, nurses and aides alike. This information should also shared with the community so they would be aware of the hospitals procedures as well as their caring staff and solid religious values.

The changes Chris proposed were monumental but necessary if the hospital were to stay afloat. They had to be well planned out and implemented carefully and slowly. The solutions when fully in place would keep the staff members employed and the community happy.
