The initial setting of the play's scenes is Athens under the reign of Theses and Hippolyta, who are themselves characters from ancient Greek mythology. But it must be understood that the "Athens" of A Midsummer Night's Dream is neither that of ancient Greece nor of its Renaissance counterpart, but an amalgamation of the former with the folk culture of Elizabethan England. After Act I, the play shifts to the "fairyland woods" and remains there through Acts II, III, and IV, returning to "Athens" in Act V for the concluding weddings and the performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe" by the uncouth, unskilled, but irrepressible company of Bottom and his fellow mechanicals.

Act I

Scene i: The play opens in the Athenian court of Theseus as he looks forward to wedding his bride, the former Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, some four days hence at the summer Solstice. The "blocking" character of the play arrives in the form of the aged Egeus, the father of Hermia. He wants his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius and he is vexed by her love for another Athenian youth, Lysander. Hermia refuses her father's demand, while both Lysander and Demetrius press their suits to Theseus. The wise Athenian ruler upholds the law as it stands: he first rules that Hermia must either follow her father's preference for Demetrius or remain unwed forever. But Theseus also gives Hermia and Lysander some time to accommodate themselves to his decision and then calls Egeus into a private, off-stage consultation. All the players leave save Lysander and Hermia, with the former uttering the famous sentiment that, "The course of true love never did run smooth" (I,i., l.134). Another Athenian maid, Helena arrives. She is both a (former) friend of Hermia and a rival for the affections of Demetrius, whom Hermia spurns but Helena loves. Hermia tries to assuage her friend's jealousy by revealing to Helena that she and Lysander plan to run away into the woods near Athens, leaving Demetrius free for Helena to pursue. Left alone on stage, Hermia tells us that she will attempt to gain Demetrius' favor by telling him about Hermia's plans and then following him into the woods. Thus, Lysander and Hermia are in love; Demetrius loves Hermia and rejects Helena; Helena nonetheless loves Demetrius and is jealous of her childhood friend, Hermia. This somewhat confusing arrangement is the premise for the play's comic proceedings in which the love of all four characters will be "redirected" by the magic of Puck at the behest of the Fairy King Oberon. (Jump to the text of Act I, scene i)

Scene ii: With the premises of the main plot out of the way, the play shifts to another, humbler section of Athens, the house of the carpenter Peter Quince. Along with several other tradesmen (Snug the joiner, Flute the bellow mender and, most comical of all, Bottom the weaver), these unschooled amateurs intend to stage a performance of the tragic love story Pyramus and Thisbe at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta, with Bottom assigned the role of Pyramus. In an extremely funny scene in which the cast's inadequacies as playwrights/actors are acutely evident (Bottom wants to play Pyramus, Thisbe, and a lion to boot), the group agrees to rehearse their "surprise" play in the woods to which Lysander and Hermia have fled. Cheap essay writers help on Chem Social Relevance essays

Stratospheric ozone is a naturally-occurring gas that filters the suns ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A diminished ozone layer allows more radiation to reach the Earths surface.

For people, overexposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune systems

Increased UV can lead to reduced crop yield and disruptions in the marine food chain.

Because this reference is a Government Agency, it has quite a large amount of reference material, and I'm unable to paraphrase too much. Please see the site for more detail.

- How humans have affected the ozone layer

Chemicals that damage the ozone layer include methyl bromide (used as a pesticide), halons (used in fire extinguishers), and methyl chloroform (used as a solvent in industrial processes). These are all man made products.

Usefulness of information

There is quite a range of information on this website regarding Ozone. Everything from what ozone is, and what individuals can do to stop the depletion, to animations of the ozone hole. The reliability of the information would indeed be good, seeing it is coming from a Government agency. There are useful diagrams also located on this website. The information is aimed at the general public, and except for general knowledge, this isn't a good site for students. No equations are included, nor anything very in-depth about the subjects.

I am a teddy bear, aching for hug, a bird, waiting to be fed. Or an owl woken from a shotgun, a fog, fading away, a tree, falling down. But no, I am more like a balloon, a red balloon.

A red balloon, waiting 20 years on the shelves just to be bought. in a store that always had its windows covered. With no sign on top, with no one ever coming to the store. Kids never knew there was a store, full of balloons for birthday parties. It seemed as though the owner never wanted to sell any thing, he said he wanted all of them for him self.

But one day, a little girl came in. she found the existing secret of the store. She had dark black hair with green eyes and a fake smile to prove she deserves the balloon. She said she wanted to buy the nicest balloon there was for a friend. She had her eyes fixed one me. She bought me, gave me to her friend, trying to prove she's sweet.

Her friend was a child, careless about things except what pleased him. He blew me up just so I won't pop, tied me with a ribbon, and shown me off to every one of his friends. I was a balloon he could be proud of. I was red and shiny, with wonderful pictures, with true air making my inside so visible. The ribbon was really what made me what I was, pretty and shiny. With out the ribbon I was a piece of red plastic lying here and there with nothing inside. And now I knew I would have stretch marks that would make me even more worthless. My ribbon was not very long. I couldn't get any farther then the ribbon allowed me to. My ribbon was heavier then my own weight. Choking me far more then I could pretend it wasn't when I tried to push my way through my wishes. I wanted to untie it and be free, wanted to fly in the sky, with the wind blowing, cheering and clapping, leading me closer to be with angles of god that made dreams come true. I never knew what I could see from higher above since all I wished was to fallow a child running and making quick turns to loose the others that were chasing him with laughter. The laugh of a child was what I was made for. The joy of happiness was all I cared about. The smile of a satisfied sole was what made me dance. Days were passing by. I was losing time to prove myself. To prove I am not just a balloon for decoration. To prove I am not just a red balloon. How sad! Who's going to believe I am not just a red balloon. Who is going to listen to my wish? Who will see the angles I do? Who will know the soft touch of wind is a blessing? My ribbon was losing hope in me. The naught was getting loss. And I was getting smaller and smaller. The smaller I got, I lost more of what I had inside, I was getting darker and darker, the darker I got the harder it was to see through my skin. Worst of all I was coming lower and lower to earth. To the soil humans Barry their dead. The soil every thing will once end up as. The little boy lost interest in playing with me. Because now I was ugly and worth less. Till one day he started poking me till I pop. And so I did. Every piece of me flew out of his hand, and landed so far away from each other no magic could ever make me what I once was again. I will wait for that magic to happen. To find out whether it was my fault or the ribbons fault. But only this time, time will not stop me from being with angles of god.

Jim Ambrose, is a -year-old citizen of Monroe but he hasn't always lived here. I am going to let you know what it was like for a kid in the late 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Jim was born in Pasadena, California in 167. During the first few years of his life he spent his life moving around and living in different places. Finally in 175 he settled down in a low-income housing community which was run by FHA. In the interview Jim said, "Kind of like Habitat for Humanity." What he could remember of this life was that the community was very friendly and he would always be doing things with the other kids in the community.

Then in 178 Jim moved to Ohio where he would live at up until he graduated High School. In Ohio Jim lived in a nice trailer park compared to the ones of today. He spent most of his time inside sheltered from the rest of the world. During these times the economy was bad for low-income families. An exact quote that Jim gave me, "My mom cried when Ronald Regan won the Presidential Election." But when he wasn't at home he was hanging out with his friends at the park. Him and his friends didn't drink nor do drugs. In high school Jim was not considered a real popular kid so he said, "The peer pressure wasn't really bad." When he went to the park he would see the cheerleaders and the sports players smoking, drinking, and having sex. "I was a virgin until twenty-one," said Jim. He figured he could wait. In his junior year Jim became a peer counselor for his school. That was when the jocks started to show Jim with a little bit more respect. He stayed in this program in his junior and senior years of high school. Every few weeks he would go to peer counseling camps where he learned about teen sex, drugs, and alcohol. He said, "This was a very powerful experience and partly the reason he was a virgin until 1."

During his teenage years Jim's relationship with his parents wasn't very good. But when I asked him he said "I tended to get along better with my mom then my dad but she wasn't always there for me." His mom would spend most of the time sitting on the edge of the couch watching soap operas. Jim's dad wasn't much better because he was a truck driver and Jim wouldn't see him for weeks upon weeks. But this one time when Jim was Linus in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" after the show his dad came up and told him, "This made my week son." This of course shocked Jim because his dad hardly ever showed Jim any affection. But when his dad did show him any affection it was a surprise. Just before his dad died he told Jim's mother "I wished I had talked to Jim more." One of the bad moments Jim could remember was when Jim reared his fist back like he was going to hit his dad and Jim's dad clocked Jim with his fist and sent him clear through the wall into the bathroom from the living room. But this was just a rare moment.

So as you can tell as a kid Jim was raised in a low-income family who moved a lot. His dad wasn't around much and when he was he didn't show any affection to his kids. Jim's mom would just watch soap operas on the couch all day. But I think Jim turned out all right because he is a very kind and courteous person. He has a great job, teaches catechism, and is an assistant youth group leader.

From decade to decade, there has been a new type of fad to sweep the country. In the 50's it was dancing and having fun. In the 60's it was to dress freely and avoid the draft. The 70's were full of pot smoking has-beens, the 80's, big hair and radical clothing. From the smallest of fads, the children in the 0's have taken a whole new approach to the game. They changed the rules that would affect the country for the rest of their existence. The fad? It is to act out in violence in school against each other, not just fist to fist physical controversy but from one boy's father's gun to another. The new fad is to take a school by a surprise attack and make news headlines. It is quite a change from the early 50's. So the question that boggles every American's mind, is why and how we allowed these children to invade and inhabit our lives and allow them to take the control they have at this point? The question can only be answered by figuring out the exact problem to a "T". We need to figure out every aspect of what they are doing. What are the exact statistics on the teen crime rate? How can we stop it? Let's start by recognizing the problem and deal with it from there.

Here is the first step. Here are some solutions to the high rising problem. It is now up to the public to take action. Three-quarters or more of all schools reported having zero tolerance policies for various student offenses. Zero tolerance policy was defined as a school or district policy that mandates predetermined consequences or punishments for specific offenses. About 0 percent of schools reported zero tolerance policies for firearms (4 percent) and weapons other than firearms. 58 percent had policies of zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs, respectively. Seventy-nine percent had a zero tolerance policy for violence and 7 percent had a zero tolerance policy for tobacco. Tobacco seems to be a rising problem on its own, and we, as citizens, teachers and peers, need to do more to let the children know that this behavior is unacceptable, that they are, in fact, still children.

Public school principals were presented with a list of crimes and asked to report the number of incidents of each type of crime that had occurred at their schools during the 16-7 school years. The crimes about which schools were asked were murder, suicide, rape for other type of sexual battery, physical attack or fight with a weapon, robbery, physical attack or fight without a weapon, theft or larceny, and vandalism. Respondents were provided with definitions for each of these types of crime. Under the assumption that crimes or offenses reported to police would be more accurately recalled, schools were asked to report only those incidents for which the police or other law enforcement representatives had been contacted. Only crimes occurring at the school, including those that took place in school buildings, on school grounds, on school buses, and at school-sponsored events or activities, but not officially on school grounds, were to be reported along with about 115,000 thefts and 8,000 incidents of vandalism. When are we going to do something about this? Do you not think that it is time that we start making an effort to make the schools safer for the kids that attend them? Or should we just forget that the children of America are people with rights too?
