"He had come south out of Georgia in 1858. In his horse-drawn wagon there was a sack of corn, a few packs of seeds, a shotgun and a few shells, a cast iron pot, and the tools he would need to build his house." That just shows what little he had to work with when they first arrived. Tobias also gets older through out the story. The story starts off when he is thirty years old and goes till after he dies. Another thing that changes with Tobias is his way of survival. When he first comes to Florida he tries to find anything edible from coons to swamp cabbage. Then his sights get turned on to selling cows that he rounds up in the swamps for money so he can buy more supplies from the trading post. After he is too old to ride around on a horse and drive cattle he decides that oranges are what he should harvest to sell.
